Retrospective Focus Prompts Facilitate Learning From video tutorials for Technical Apprenticeship

Although the demand for video tutorials has risen recently in the field of technical apprenticeship, they can overtax learners, especially novices. Enhancing video tutorials with prompts is a potential support measure to ensure learners focus on the key aspects of learning content. However, open questions remain concerning the prompt type and presentation mode. We thus investigated the effectiveness of different prompt types (retrospective vs. anticipatory vs. unfocused vs. no prompt) and presentation modes (video vs. still shots and text) in a 4 x 2-factorial experiment (N = 205). We used original industrial video tutorials and assessed learning processes (e.g., prompt answers) and outcomes (e.g., knowledge about working steps). Results show that retrospective prompts are the most effective prompts for our novice sample. Furthermore, learning processes mediated the prompt effect on learning outcomes-regardless of the presentation mode. Our findings underscore the importance of retrospectively focusing on working steps when learning with video tutorials.

video tutorials are an effective method of knowledge transfer and learning. However, they are often time-consuming to create and difficult to access during work. This paper introduces an approach that simplifies the creation of video tutorials in the workplace and promotes their use during work. By utilizing smart glasses, practitioners can record video tutorials during their daily work processes and utilize them for knowledge transfer to other employees without much additional effort. This offers the advantage of directly and easily sharing expertise in the workplace without being constrained by time or location. Given the intended simplicity of this approach, the question arises whether it creates video tutorials that help people in their learning. The paper presents a study that compares the effectiveness of knowledge transfer using these video tutorials against traditional personal training methods in the workplace. With 18 participants from the nursing and production sectors, we observed the training and learning outcomes of using video tutorials on smart glasses over multiple sessions, comparing them with personal training, which is considered the standard for practical onboarding. The study results indicate that learning with video tutorials does not significantly differ in terms of learning outcomes from traditional personal training methods. Overall, this study highlights the potential of video tutorials with smart glasses for knowledge transfer in workplaces, while also identifying challenges and opportunities for optimizing onboarding processes for employees.

How an Online University Librarian and a Liberal Arts College Librarian Implemented video tutorials during COVID-19: A Mentoring Case Study

As participants in the Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Distance and Online Learning Section (DOLS) Mentoring Program, two librarians collaborated to deploy a pilot library video tutorial program at the mentee librarian’s small liberal arts college in the Southeastern United States. Drawing on the mentoring librarian’s experience with tutorials at their largely online university, the mentee librarian maintained instructional support and faculty engagement during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the authors compared statistics between this pilot video tutorial program with the mentoring librarian’s more established program and discussed the benefits of the mentoring relationship for both librarians. © 2023 The Author(s). Undergraduate Pathology: video tutorials including digital pathology make teaching more practical and the subject more attractive

Introduction and objectives: Although pathology is one of the cornerstone subjects of the medical curriculum, for many students it can prove too theoretical and remote from clinical relevance. We present the results of a new distance learning project designed to make the teaching of pathology more practical and render the subject more attractive to the medical student. Materials and methods: We developed a teaching programme which included digital pathology images and video tutorials of clinical cases;the students were required to arrive at a final diagnosis. An explanatory video of how biopsies are processed was also included. Twitter was used for rapid interaction with the students. A questionnaire was then completed by the participants evaluating the various aspects of the project. Results: All the students reached a correct diagnosis for the clinical cases. 89% of the participants were extremely satisfied with the project. The majority agreed that the different activities were interesting and useful for improving their understanding of pathology and thus recommended that they should be continued. Conclusions: Our results support the inclusion of digital pathology into the curriculum together with video tutorials to enhance undergraduate pathology teaching. In the future, such distance learning could prove a useful resource in combination with conventional face-to-face lectures and tutorials. (c) 2021 The Author(s). This paper presents 'participatory video tutorials'-a strategy developed to support the digital empowerment of young people living with cognitive disabilities. The support strategy complements and expands dominant perspectives on the target group, which is often seen as disabled and in need of assistive technology, by foregrounding the young participants' digital abilities and facilitating them as active producers of digital content, which already plays a major role in their everyday social interactions. We present the background and framework for participatory video tutorials and the results from staging digital production with sixteen young participants. Empirically, the results contribute perspectives on this target group as producers (vs. users) with abilities (vs. disabilities). Methodologically, the results outline four principles (socio-technical belonging, technical accessibility, elasticity, and material reusability) that can assist HCI researchers, professionals, and caretakers in their efforts to support the target group in digital production. These principles are guidelines for a participatory staging, driven by the young people's motivation for self-expression. The study and the results contribute an example and a strategy for how to work toward digital inclusion by engaging a marginalized target group in digital production.

Background Simulation-based practice has become increasingly important in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) training. Nevertheless, personnel resources for demonstration and mentoring simulation-based practice are limited. video tutorials could be a useful tool to overcome this dilemma. However, the effect of video tutorials on MIS training and improvement of MIS skills is unclear. Methods A prospective randomised trial (n = 24 MIS novices) was conducted. A video-trainer with three different tasks (#1-3) was used for standardised goal-directed MIS training. The subjects were randomised to two groups with standard instructional videos (group A, n = 12) versus comprehensive video tutorials for each training task watched at specific times of repetition (group B, n = 12). Performance was analysed using the MISTELS score. At the beginning and following the curriculum, an MIS cholecystectomy (CHE) was performed on a porcine organ model and analysed using the GOALS score. After 18 weeks, participants performed 10 repetitions of tasks #1-3 for follow-up analysis. Results More participants completed tasks #1 and #2 in group B (83.3 and 75%) than in group A (66.7 and 50%, ns). For task #2, there was a significant improvement in precision in group B (p < 0.001). For the entire cohort, the GOALS-Scores were 12.9 before and 18.9 after the curriculum (p < 0.001), with no significant difference between groups. Upon follow-up, 84.2% (task#1), 26.3% (task#2) and 100% (task#3) of MIS novices were able to reach the defined goals (A vs. B ns). There was a trend for a better MISTELS score in group B upon follow-up. Conclusions Standardised comprehensive video tutorials watched frequently throughout practice can significantly improve precision in MIC training. This aspect should be incorporated in MIS training.

The paper presents the first experiences of teaching design of video tutorials in a ninth semester engineering cause titled "Learning and technology". YouTube's popularity and easy to use programs for video production makes video tutorials a promising educational tool. Students tend to use video tutorial on their own initiative as supplement to curriculum literature or just for fun. The extensive use of simple video tutorials in both formal and informal settings makes it relevant to study in the classroom from a design angle. The students developed simplistic and creative tutorials. They reflected on the design processes and how to compose efficient tutorials. Additionally, tacit knowledge were displayed visually due to interactions and system behavior. This tacit knowledge on display is one of the greatest potentials of video tutorials.

Software development video tutorials are emerging as a new resource for developers to support their information needs. However, when trying to find the right video to watch for a task at hand, developers have little information at their disposal to quickly decide if they found the right video or not. This can lead to missing the best tutorials or wasting time watching irrelevant ones. Other external sources of information for developers, such as StackOverflow, have benefited from the existence of informative tags, which help developers to quickly gauge the relevance of posts and find related ones. We argue that the same is valid also for videos and propose the first set of approaches to automatically generate tags describing the contents of software development video tutorials. We investigate seven tagging approaches for this purpose, some using information retrieval techniques and leveraging only the information in the videos, others relying on external sources of information, such as StackOverflow, as well as two out-of-the-box commercial video tagging approaches. We evaluated 19 different configurations of these tagging approaches and the results of a user study showed that some of the information retrieval-based approaches performed the best and were able to recommend tags that developers consider relevant for describing programming videos.
