Versatile video coding (VVC), standardized in 2022 as ITU-T Recommendation H.266, ISO/IEC 23090–3 and MPEG-I Part3, is the latest block-based hybrid video coding standard which claims to fulfill all the requirements of todays and tomorrow's video applications. VVC defines more tools to increase compression efficiency while maintaining the same level of quality. The tradeoff is the computational complexity. H.266/VVC, especially the intra-coding loop, is computationally very complex due to its nature of iteratively trying all possible QTMT partitioning tree alternatives with all options of compression technologies. In this paper, we focus on the intra-coding loop of VVC for 8K video and study the effects of technologies like MTS, LFNST, MIP etc. on the compression efficiency (bits), quality (Y-PSNR), and computational complexity (runtime). By switching off all those optional technologies, we observe 46.07% runtime gain with only 5.00% increase in bitrate, and 0.0423 dB decrease in Y-PSNR on average. Since this is a remarkable gain in complexity with a limited effect on efficiency and quality, this tradeoff can be taken into consideration for many 8K applications utilizing VVC.

This paper explores the configuration space of Low Complexity Enhancement video coding (LCEVC) for 4K SDR content and the VVC reference software VTM as base layer codec. The configuration space is spanned using a sweep over multiple values for the base layer QP and the LCEVC parameters sublayer 2 step width, scaling mode, number of processed picture planes, transformation type, and sequence-wise optimized upscaling filter coefficients. The best configurations are selected using a convex hull approach. Compared to the default LCEVC configuration, we achieve average BD-rate gains of 10.92% and 2.06% using 1d and 2d upscaling, respectively. However, our best possible LCEVC configuration still yields an average YCbCr BD-rate loss of 15.26% compared to VTM at full resolution.

In Versatile video coding (VVC), Rate-Distortion Optimized Quantization (RDOQ) is a widely adopted technique to strike a balance between bit rate and distortion. However, the computational complexity introduced by RDOQ poses significant challenges for real-time applications. To address this issue, we propose a low-complexity rate estimation model to accelerate the conventional RDOQ approach. Through comprehensive analysis, we have identified the generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD) as an efficient model for simulating the distribution of transform coefficients. Leveraging this insight, we developed a GGD-based rate estimator to expedite the selection of quantization levels. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves an average encoding time reduction of 13.15%, with only a minimal impact on BD-Rate.

This paper is dedicated to Distributed video coding (DVC) which allows to shift the encoding complexity to the decoder side. We consider DVC architecture, where a side information (SI), which is needed for the error-correction decoder, are selected from multiple hypothesis obtained from set of different traditional and deep learned frame interpolation algorithms. First, we show that the interpolation algorithms could provide different quality of SI depending on a motion model, i.e. the SI averaging proposed in earlier works is not efficient. Therefore, for each bit plane we propose to select the best SI from the available set of hypothesis using feedback of the error-correction decoder: the best hypothesis corresponds to successful error-correction decoding with minimum syndrome bits received from the encoder. Second, in contrast to the previous approaches, we modified the correlation noise model (CNM), so that each bit plane can be processed with the variance obtained from different frame interpolators allowing for more precise noise modeling. Experimental results demonstrate that comparing with DVC with a single frame interpolator this adaptive selection strategy offering significant bitrate savings and gain in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), particularly in sequences with complex motion and varying group of picture (GOP) lengths.

video coding is crucial for modern communications, but traditional methods with complex encoders limit their utility in many emerging consumer electronic applications. Distributed video coding (DVC), which shifts encoding complexity to the decoder, is a promising alternative but requires decoder feedback, limiting its practicality. We propose a semantic communication-based DVC system for lossless video coding, featuring a low-complexity semantic-based video encoder coupled with turbo channel code. The proposed codec significantly outperforms in terms of encoder complexity while maintaining better rate distortion performance at low channel signal-to-noise ratios compared to the state-of-the-art Versatile video coding based codec in power constrained consumer video sensors.

Resampling-based video coding is a well-established strategy for compressing high-resolution video under limited bandwidth. Recently, super resolution (SR) technologies has been explored for upsampling the low-resolution reconstructed video in the decoder side. Despite the promising rate-distortion improvements these SR model can offer, the significant complexity of neural network makes them impractical for real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a low complexity SR model for resampling-based video coding by applying CP decomposition to vanilla convolution to reduce complexity. To enhance the performance of the proposed low complexity SR, we utilize multiple decoded information generated during compression as additional auxiliary input of SR. This information provides valuable insights of the compressed picture, such as the texture and directional details. Additionally, to minimize the number of parameters in the neural network, a single model with split branches is designed to process luma and chroma components separately. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves 3.72% and 3.65% BD-rate savings under random access and all-intra configurations compared to the latest video coding standard VVC/H.266, respectively. Compared to existing works, the proposed SR model exhibits a superior trade-off between complexity and coding performance.

In recent years, low-latency video transmission has become necessary for IoT devices and autonomous driving systems. We previously reported a single-line-based ultra-low-latency video coding method to meet this requirement that achieves microsecond order latency for 4K/8K high-resolution video. This method achieved a compression ratio of less than 30% with a simple process. At the present time, however, for 5G-based video transmission in various current applications, a low-latency performance of 1 ms is practical, and a better compression ratio is consequently required. Therefore, a video coding method that satisfies the low latency of 10μs, which accounts for only a few percent of 1 ms video transmission, is urgently required, and a high compression ratio while maintaining high image quality, as well as low power consumption and low cost. In this paper, we present a video coding method that uses 4 lines as the basic processing unit and achieves a low latency of about 20 μs. This 4-lines-based processing includes three features to improve the compression ratio: a variable block size, adaptive selection of orthogonal transforms, and a new image prediction mode. The proposed method achieves an average compression ratio of 9.6% at 40 dB, a 2.2-percentage-point improvement over previous work. In addition, compared to the standard H.264 baseline profile, the proposed method achieves a computation scale of half or less and has advantages in terms of power consumption and implementation cost.

H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is a recently completed video compression standard jointly developed by the ITU-T VCEG and the ISO/IEC MPEG standards committees. The standard promises much higher compression than that possible with earlier standards. It allows coding of non-interlaced and interlaced video very efficiently, and even at high bit rates provides more acceptable visual quality than earlier standards. Further, the standard supports flexibilities in coding as well as organization of coded data that can increase resilience to errors or losses. As might be expected, the increase in coding efficiency and coding flexibility comes at the expense of an increase in complexity with respect to earlier standards. In this paper, we first briefly introduce the video coding tools that the standard supports and how these tools are organized into profiles. As with earlier standards, the mechanism of profiles allows one to implement only a desired subset of the standard and still be interoperable with applications of interest. Next, we discuss how the various video coding tools of the standard work, as well as the related issue of how to perform encoding using these tools, We then evaluate the coding performance in terms of contribution to overall improvement offered by individual tools, options within these tools, and important combinations of tools, on a representative set of video test sequences and movie clips. Next, we discuss a number of additional elements of the standard such as, tools that provide system support, details of levels of profiles, and the issue of encoder and decoder complexity. Finally, we summarize our overview and analysis of this standard, by identifying, based on their performance, promising tools as well as options within various tools. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Motion-compensated prediction is the key to high-performance video coding. Previous works have explored alternatives to the classical translational motion model in video coding, but the cumulative rate-distortion performance has not been significant enough to see such approaches adopted in mainstream standards. In this paper, we propose a new extended prediction strategy that incorporates non-translational motion prediction. This method uses an elastic motion model with 2-D cosine basis functions to estimate non-translational motion between the blocks. To achieve superior performance, the proposed scheme takes advantage of larger blocks with multi-level partitioning. Experimental results show that this combined framework outperforms the existing techniques, including those available in the recent H.264 standard.
