With the explosive growth of video data, content-based video analysis and management technologies such as indexing, browsing and retrieval have drawn much attention. video shot boundary detection (SBD) is usually the first and important step for those technologies. Great efforts have been made to improve the accuracy of SBD algorithms. However, most works are based on signal rather than interpretable features of frames. In this paper, we propose a novel video shot boundary detection framework based on interpretable TAGs learned by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Firstly, we adopt a candidate segment selection to predict the positions of shot boundaries and discard most non-boundary frames. This preprocessing method can help to improve both accuracy and speed of the SBD algorithm. Then, cut transition and gradual transition detections which are based on the interpretable TAGs are conducted to identify the shot boundaries in the candidate segments. Afterwards, we synthesize the features of frames in a shot and get semantic labels for the shot. Experiments on TRECVID 2001 test data show that the proposed scheme can achieve a better performance compared with the state-of-the-art schemes. Besides, the semantic labels obtained by the framework can be used to depict the content of a shot.

While adaptive splitting the quadtree-structured coding units according to the video content is utmost important in achieving the best encoding performance of the High Efficiency video coding (MPEG-H HEVC/H.265), the newest video coding standard, its optimal decision requires much computation. To resolve this complexity problem, we extend the keypoint-based CU depth decision (KCD) method by further providing it with adaptive decision capability to reduce its complexity more. Experimental results show that the adaptive method can save encoding time by 11.6% with sacrificing BD-rate only by 0.68% compared to its non-adaptive scheme.

Motion estimation (ME) plays an essential role in video coding, but ME is also the most time-consuming part. Therefore, the algorithm for ME should be optimized for guaranteeing the real time performance of encoder. UMHexagonS algorithm, as one of the fast ME algorithms, has been accepted by AVS+. An improved UMHexagonS algorithm is proposed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, the fixed asymmetrical cross template is replaced with a dynamic asymmetrical cross template. Search points of multi-hexagon-grid search are reduced. 5x5 spiral search as well as the extended hexagon template is improved. Furthermore, a small square template is added in the last of the algorithm. The simulation results show that with the proposed algorithm, time consumed in ME can be reduced from 8.93% to 15.27% of the total encoding time while the coding quality of the UMHexagonS algorithm is guaranteed.

We present a novel arbitrary spatial downsizing method in H.264 to MPEG4 simple profile transcoder. Using median filtering and scaling of input H.264 4x4 block level motion vectors, downsizing module generates target resolution compatible 4x4 block level motion vector, which is fed at MPEG4 encoder to generate MPEG4 compatible final 16x16 or 8x8 block level motion vector. Downsizing and encoding modules are differentiated for better portability. Our approach, being approximately 6-8 times faster compared to full encode system, achieves almost same compression as compared to full encoding.

In many multimedia applications, image encryption has to be conducted prior to image compression. This paper proposes an Encryption-then-Compression system using a JPEG XR friendly perceptual encryption method, which enables to be conducted prior to JPEG XR compression. The proposed encryption method can provide approximately the same compression performance as that of JPEG XR compression without any encryption. It is also shown that the proposed system consists of four block-based encryption steps, and provides a reasonably high level of security. Most of conventional perceptual encryption methods have not been designed for international compression standards, but for the first time this paper focuses on applying the JPEG XR standard, which supports lossy and lossless coding for various kinds of images including high dynamic range images.

In a digital television scenario, the video signal may have different bit rates, encoding formats, and spatial resolutions according to the type of transmission, the application, and the receiver. To flexibly deliver video to users with different available resources, the content needs to be adapted dynamically. video transcoding is the operation of converting a video from one format into another. In the particular case of the reception of digital videos using mobile receivers, the spatial resolution of the video must be adjusted in order to fit in the display of a mobile phone. In this work, we present an analysis of the subjective and objective quality of spatially transcoded videos. We consider transcoding algorithms that downsample the video frames using moving average, median, mode, weighted average and sigma filters with different sizes. The results show that among the tested algorithms, the spatial transcoded algorithms using the filters 2 x 2 Median and 2 x 2 Sigma filters produce the best results, both objectively and subjectively.

Cloud-based video monitoring system has many advantages and interesting applications. However, it has a critical problem of invading privacy. For example, if cloud servers or transmission channels are attacked, their private data can be leaked to the attackers. If we use well-known encryption schemes such as AES or DES, the security lifetime will increase but it requires additional computational operations and algorithm modules. Therefore, we propose a novel video content protection scheme which can protect private event regions in a video sequence for cloud-based video monitoring services. When specific events have occurred or the high-resolution video needs to be stored, region adaptive transform domain Wyner-Ziv coding scheme is applied.

Thanks to advances in display technologies and affordable end user devices, interest in Virtual Reality (VR) and related multimedia content, namely 180 degrees and 360 degrees images and videos, has been rapidly increasing in recent years. For effective delivery of a video in such format, compression algorithms with high efficiency are vital. In this paper, the outputs of a subjective-based compression performance study of recent (HEVC and VP9) and emerging (AV1) video coding formats for 180 degrees/360 degrees videos are presented. Viewers' Quality of Experience (QoE) is assessed by subjective tests utilizing Absolute Category Rating with Hidden Reference (ACR-HR) protocol. In addition, these tests, wherein two different Head Mounted Devices (HMDs) from Oculus were used, are extended with a custom questionnaire that helps to better understand observers' experience and feelings with VR. Results revealed that not only the quality levels (bit rates) of the compressed 180 degrees/360 degrees videos have influence on the viewers' perceived QoE.

In distributed video coding (DVC), channel coding technique plays a key role to improve the coding performance. However, many iterative channel coding schemes such as LDPC codes and turbo codes suffer from error floor region, which can give some negative impact to the DVC such as degradation in rate-distortion performance. In this paper, to reduce this error floor problem in rate adaptive LDPC code, large cycle length design and source revealing scheme (channel coding scheme with degree-1 syndrome) are applied to the transform domain Wyner-Ziv coding. The proposed scheme is shown to improve the coding performance.

High definition television (HDTV/2K) and ultra-high definition television (UHDTV-1/4K, UHDTV-2/8K) live program production which use internet protocol (IP) have been increased. In addition, taking advantage of IP technology, remote production which produce live program at a broadcast station by connecting venues and the broadcast station via an IP network is in developing, also the devices for remote production is in developing. Separate devices, each dedicated to transmitting 2K, 4K, or 8K video, are needed for remote production;however, recent live program production uses 2K, 4K, and 8K video at the same time, resulting in an increasingly complex system. In this paper, the authors propose a multi-format transmission system that enables efficient remote production without the need for dedicated devices. The proposed method decomposes 4K and 8K videos into 2K in order to treat 2K/4K/8K video signals as a unified format. The authors report the simulation results of image quality evaluations using the video decomposition method and lightweight compression, and the authors evaluate the processing delay of video decomposition.
