The challenges of today's competitive business contexts drive enterprises to guarantee their customers permanent product innovations which is nowadays stimulated by the application of multidisciplinary solution principles. Therefore, means have to be provided to cope with the associated complexity. From a PLM perspective, the most troublesome gaps to bridge are the synchronisation of disparate product data and related processes. This paper outlines concepts for a view-based modelling approach using the example of multidisciplinary product functions as well as their prototypical implementation.

Fragmentation of information across instances of different metamodels poses a significant problem for software developers and leads to a major increase in effort of transformation development. Moreover, compositions of metamodels tend to be incomplete, imprecise, and erroneous, making it impossible to present it to users or use it directly as input for applications. Customized views satisfy information needs by focusing on a particular concern, and filtering out information that is not relevant to this concern. For a broad establishment of view-based approaches, an automated solution to deal with separate metamodels and the high complexity of model transformations is necessary. In this paper, we present the ModelJoin approach for the rapid creation of views. Using a human-readable textual DSL, developers can define custom views declaratively without having to write model transformations or define a bridging metamodel. Instead, a metamodel generator and higher-order transformations create annotated target metamodels and the appropriate transformations on-the-fly. The resulting views, which are based on these metamodels, contain joined instances and can effectively express concerns unforseen during metamodel design. We have applied the ModelJoin approach and validated the textual DSL in a case study using the Palladio Component Model.

view-based development is a successful approach for the development of complex cyber-physical systems. It uses views to abstract from the complexity of the system and allows the developers to focus on exactly the necessary information for a certain task. With projective views, the information shown is derived from underlying models, and changes made to the views are reflected back to the models. Similar to how models conform to a meta-model, views conform to a view type, which describes what and how the information is presented. When the underlying meta-models need to evolve, e.g., due to new requirements, so do the view types that rely on them. In this work, we investigate how to assist the meta-model/view-type co-evolution process by providing suggestions for adapting a view type after a meta-model change. To this end, we provide an approach and conceptual model for such co-evolution, based on precisely describing what a suggestion is. We present a catalog of domain-independent suggestions for the most representative meta-model evolution steps. We believe such suggestions can provide significant assistance in the maintenance and management of the meta-model/view type co-evolution.

Governing business compliance with regulations, laws, best practices, contracts, and the like is not an easy task, and so far there are only limited software products available that help a company to express compliance rules and to analyze its compliance state. We argue that today's SOA-based way of implementing and conducting business (e.g., using Web services and business process engines) lends itself very well to the development of a comprehensive compliance government solution that effectively aids companies in being compliant. In this paper, we contextualize the compliance problem in SOA-based businesses, we highlight which are the most salient research challenges that need to be addressed, and we describe our approach to compliance governance, spanning design, execution, and evaluation concerns.

When software architectures are modeled from di ff erent viewpoints using di ff erent notations, it is necessary to keep information that appears in several models consistent. To achieve consistency for a speci fi c system, developers need two competences: First, they have to be able to express the conceptual relationships between the elements of the involved modeling languages and domains. Second, they have to be able to enforce these relationships by implementing model transformations that keep speci fi c model instances consistent. Current transformation approaches, however, do not separate this conceptual challenge of specifying consistency from the technical complexity of implementing it. To ease multi-view modeling, we present a generative approach, in which change-driven in-place transformations are generated from abstract speci fi cations in order to sustain consistency between several models. These speci fi cations can be expressed by domain experts using a consistency language that supports declarative mappings, normative invariants, and imperative response actions. The transformations generated from consistency speci fi cations make it possible to reuse and customize technical solutions to typical consistency preservation problems. We will evaluate our approach with two case studies of component-based engineering.

As the scale, complexity, and scope of software-intensive systems continue to grow, so does the importance of synergistically integrating two important emerging paradigms in software engineering multi-level modeling and multi-view modeling. While stable tooling for both has been developed by research institutions in recent years, to date no tool has attempted to integrate the two at a fundamental level. In this paper, we describe some first steps we have taken in this direction by integrating the Vitruvius V-SUM-based multi-view environment with the Melanee multi-level modeling environment. In particular, we show how Vitruvius's Reactions language, which allows different models in Vitruvius V-SUMs to be kept consistent, can be extended to support multi-level V-SUMs and views represented in Melanee's dialect of multi-level modeling.

Most view-based modelling approaches are today based on a "synthetic" approach in which the views hold all the information modelled about a system and are kept consistent using explicit, inter-view correspondence rules. The alternative "projective" approach, in which the contents of views are "projected" from a single underlying model on demand, is far less widely used due to the lack of suitable conceptual frameworks and languages. In this paper we take a step towards addressing this problem by presenting the foundations of a suitable language and conceptual framework for defining and applying views for projective modelling. The framework leverages deep modeling in order to seamlessly support views that exist at, and span, multiple levels of classification. The viewpoint language was developed in the context of Orthographic Software Modelling (OSM) but is more generally applicable to any projective modelling approach.

In this paper we propose a typed approach to business process specification based on typed workflow charts. These can be exploited as a domain-specific programming language and facilitate tight integration between workflow definition and system dialogue programming. The approach also supports the integration of business process modeling and business process automation. We discuss two ways of exploiting this potential for integration, one is the design of an integrated business process management suite and the other is a software artifact tracker based on a view-based, multidimensional software modeling tool.
