This study addresses the challenges of enhancing caching efficiency for DSM-CC Data Carousel BIOP messages within the Android TV Broadcast Stack virtual file system. Digital Storage Media Command and Control (DSM-CC) protocols, crucial for managing digital storage media's bitstream, face significant efficiency issues, especially in broadcast systems where data transmission is unidirectional. The research focuses on developing innovative approaches to optimize caching mechanisms, reducing latency, and improving performance in accessing multimedia content. By proposing a strategic caching method and a dynamic approach to manage output stream capacities, the study presents a solution that significantly mitigates the problems associated with the traditional caching of large files and the reuse of cache data. Evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches in enhancing system performance and reliability, highlighting their potential to contribute to the advancement of digital broadcasting technologies. This work not only lays the groundwork for future research in more adaptive and efficient caching strategies but also enhances the user experience in digital broadcasting systems.

Optimization of Small Sized file Access Efficiency in Hadoop Distributed file system by Integrating virtual file system Layer

Storage for large datasets, handling data in different formats and data getting generated with high speed are the major highlights of the Hadoop because of which the Hadoop got invented. Hadoop is the solution for the big data problems as discussed above. In order to give the improved solution (in terms of access efficiency and time) for small sized files, this solution is proposed. A novel approach called VFS-HDFS architecture is designed in which the focus is on optimization of small sized files access problems with significant development compared with the existing solutions i.e. HDFS sequence files, HAR, NHAR. In the proposed work a virtual file system layer has been added as a wrapper over the top of existing HDFS architecture. However, the research work is carried out without altering the existing HFDS architecture. In this paper drawbacks of existing techniques i.e. Flat file Technique and Table Chain Technique which are implemented in HDFS HAR, NHAR, sequence file is overcome by using Bucket Chain Technique. The files to merge in a single bucket are selected using ensemble classifier which is a combination of different classifiers. Combination of multiple classifiers gives the better accurate results. Using this proposed system, better results are obtained compared with the existing system in terms of access efficiency of small sized files in HDFS.

Data access and management on a large, global scale is currently at the center of scientific interest. This follows from the need for data access from multi- and hybrid-cloud applications. In most cases existing solutions provide sufficient functionality to scale computing resources but scaling resources in terms of efficient data access e.g. for data-intensive applications is still not comprehensively resolved. In this paper, we present a new approach to global data access that supports the execution of data-intensive applications on globally distributed heterogeneous resources provided and managed by independent providers. We identify the functionality, representation, and processing of contextual information in the form of metadata, and the organization of data, resulting in four models describing the details of the approach. An experimental evaluation of this approach is discussed. We show overheads for single- and multi-site environments, system scalability, and usage of context awareness to achieve desired behavior proving insignificant overhead introduced by the system. The results confirm usability of the approach to supporting computations in heterogeneous environments with unified access to data distributed worldwide achieved by using broad contextual information. We present our experience using containers to scale up a massive ensemble of coupled I/O bound workloads on the NERSC Cori supercomputer. We describe the design of a hierarchical simulation structure using the Integrated Plasma Simulator (IPS) that enables the flexible execution of coupled simulations at the system, node, and core level using the same coupling abstraction and API. The hierarchical design allows for the node-level execution to be efficiently executed using containers while not impacting the structure of the simulation at the system level. We demonstrate the viability of the approach by presenting experimental results from applications in coupled fusion plasma simulations that illustrate the performance impact of using containers to deploy the node-level workloads, in conjunction with the user mountable XFS file systems to ameliorate the load on the Lustre parallel file system. We also present results from production runs showing the ability of the ensemble simulations to scale to hundreds of Cori Haswell nodes, with little or no overhead.

In the case of IoT data acquisition, long-term storage of large amounts of sensor data is a significant challenge. When a cloud service is used, fixed costs such as a communication line for uploading and a monthly fee are unavoidable. In addition, the use of large-capacity storage servers incurs high initial installation costs. In this paper, we propose a Network Attached Storage (NAS) integrated file system called the "Sensor Data file system (SDFS)", which has advantages of being on-site, low-cost, and highly scalable. We developed the SDFS using FUSE, which is an interface for implementing file systems in user-space. SDFS not only allows multiple NAS to be treated as a single file system but also has functions that facilitate the ease of the addition of storage. In this paper, we compared SDFS with existing integrated storage modalities such as aufs and unionfs-fuse. The results indicate that SDFS achieves an equivalent throughput compared with existing file systems in terms of read/write performance.

RepoFS: file system view of Git repositories

Empirical software engineering work often involves studying revision control system repositories maintained using the popular Git system. Checking out each revision one wants to study is inefficient. On the other hand the examination of directories and files of past revisions using Git's commands suffers from a usability perspective. We introduce RepoFs, a tool that exposes a Git repository as a virtual user-level file system. Commits, branches, and tags appear as separate directory trees allowing them to be efficiently processed through command-line tools and file explorers. We illustrate these points through motivating examples and discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the proposed approach. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

With the increasing usage of electronic confidential documents on Linux operating systems, the caused potential threats are becoming more and more serious, because of the lack of relevant mature security management software for Linux operating system. In this paper, a related document monitoring strategies based on virtual file system (VFS) is studied. Then the common file search methods and string matching methods are summarized for the security inspection of the confidential computer running the Linux operating system. The study of this paper has important engineering value for improving the effect of the confidential computer security management work in the future.

As modern computer systems face the challenge of managing large data, filesystems must deal with a large number of files. This leads to amplified concerns of metadata and data operations. filesystems in Linux manage the metadata of files by constructing in-memory structures such as directory entry (dentry) and inode. However, we found inefficiencies in metadata management mechanisms, especially in the path traversal mechanism of Linux file systems when searching for a dentry in the dentry cache. In this paper, we optimize metadata operations of path traversing by searching for the dentry in the backward manner. By using the backward finding mechanism, we can find the target dentry with reduced number of dentry cache lookups when compared with the original forward finding mechanism. However, this backward path lookup mechanism complicates permission guarantee of each path component. We addess this issue by proposing the use of a permission-granted list. We have evaluated our optimized techniques with several benchmarks including real-world workload. The experimental results show that our optimizations improve path lookup latency by up to 40% and overall throughput by up to 56% in real-world benchmarks which has a number of path-deepen files.

The Open Community Runtime specification prescribes the way a task-parallel application has to be written, in order to give the runtime system the ability to automatically migrate work and data, provide fault tolerance, improve portability, etc. These constraints prevent an application from efficiently starting a new process to run another external program. We have designed an extension of the specification which provides exactly this functionality in a way that fits the task-based model. The bulk of our work is devoted to exploring the way the task-parallel application can interact with an external application without having to resort to using files on a physical drive for data exchange. To eliminate the need to make changes to the external application, the data is exposed via a virtual file system using the filesystem-in-userspace architecture.

Modern operating systems incorporate an abstract layer called virtual file system(VFS), which is positioned between user applications and real file systems to hide the differences of various file systems and to expose generic application interfaces for requesting file system services. However, VFS sometimes does not give applications an opportunity to pass information to file systems to help them make correct optimization decisions. In this paper, we review the Linux VFS, discuss its deficiencies and propose several extensions to allow applications to cooperate with the file systems more efficiently. We introduce simple prefetching interfaces and advisory flags to allow applications to communicate application-related semantics to VFS and/or the underlying file systems. These suggestions, which neither affect the semantics of applications nor modify their programming models, not only lead to simple VFS/file systems but also guide them to make correct performance-related decisions, if required. We demonstrate that these interfaces and flags are also easy to implement and can boost application performance by up to 4.29 X.
