Co-existing fixed-grid and flex-grid (i. e., mixedgrid) optical networks introduce new challenges for network orchestration. Such mixed-grid networks are often controlled by hierarchical distributed architecture comprising of Optical network Controllers and Software-Defined network Controllers. Optimal deployment of these controllers is very important for efficient management of mixed-grid optical networks.

The emergence of a new class of enhanced multimedia services has pushed network operators to support innovative network services while meeting end-to-end Quality of Service requirements and maintaining profitability. Recent works have hailed network Function virtualization (NFV) as a cost-effective enabling technology for novel service delivery in 5G networks. Over time, the association between these NFV-based services and multi-domain networks has grown. As the market competition posed by third-party operators such as virtual operators and service providers has intensified, profitability has become a crucial factor in resource allocation issues. In this paper, we formulate the problem of multi-domain network slicing in dynamic market environments and investigate the effects of these variables on service placement. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we employ a node ranking-based algorithm to determine optimal slice entry points in order to maximize profits while meeting end-user QoS requirements. In terms of slice placement acceptance rate and profit growth, numerical results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed solutions.

The adoption of the virtualization paradigm in both computing and networking domains portends a landscape of heterogeneous service capabilities and resources pervasively distributed and interconnected and deeply integrated through the 5G network infrastructure. In this service ecosystem, dynamic service demand can be flexibly and elastically accomplished by composing heterogeneous services provisioned over a distributed and virtualized resource infrastructure. Indeed, with the term virtual functions we refer to virtual computing as well as network service capabilities (e.g., routers and middlebox functions provided as virtual network functions). In order to cope with the increasingly resource intensive demand, these virtual functions will be deployed in distributed clusters of small-scale datacenters typically located in current exchanges at the network edge and will supplement those deployed in traditional large cloud datacenters. In this work we formulate the problem of composing, computing and networking virtual functions to select those nodes along the path that minimizes the overall latency (i.e. network and processing latency) in the above mentioned scenario. The optimization problem is formulated as a Resource Constrained Shortest Path problem on an auxiliary layered graph accordingly defined. The layered structure of the graph ensures that the order of VFs specified in the request is preserved. Additional constraints can be also taken into account in the graph construction phase. Finally, we provide a use case preliminary evaluation of the proposed model.

Cloud environments require dynamic and adaptive networking policies. It is preferred to use heuristics over advanced learning algorithms in virtual network functions (VNFs) in production because of high-performance constraints. This paper proposes Aquarius to passively yet efficiently gather observations and enable the use of machine learning to collect, infer, and supply accurate networking state information - without incurring additional signaling and management overhead. This paper illustrates the use of Aquarius with a traffic classifier, an auto-scaling system, and a load balancer - and demonstrates the use of three different machine learning paradigms - unsupervised, supervised, and reinforcement learning, within Aquarius, for inferring network state. Testbed evaluations show that Aquarius increases network state visibility and brings notable performance gains with low overhead.

In this research we present the results of approbation of the prototype of the autonomous system for ensuring cyber security and the quality of maintenance of the software-defined infrastructure of the multi-cloud platform. A hybrid neural network based on the multi-layer perceptron and self-organizing Kohonen network was used as an approach to detecting harmful traffic. The study showed that the use of the proposed approach makes it possible to increase the effectiveness of detecting attacks such as denial of service and preserving the quality of service in the corporate network.

Intent-Based networking aims to automate network management by allowing users to express desired outcomes rather than manually configuring network resources. For its fulfilment, a user intent should be translated into machine-executable actions, which are then implemented in the infrastructure, and their outcome continuously monitored. However, such an automated loop may be hindered by conflicts that arise within an intent or between multiple intents throughout their lifecycle. In this work, we propose a Prolog-based declarative model and reasoning methodology to detect and resolve conflicts arising from new incoming intents. By leveraging and extending an open-source Prolog prototype designed for intent processing and translation into virtual network Function chains, we show its conflict detection and resolution capabilities through an illustrative application use case.

network Function virtualization (NFV) is gaining popularity among network operators to provide cost effective and dynamic network services. NFV enables faster service by deploying virtual instances of network functions. While serving dynamic and varying traffic demands, network operators can get benefit from knowing the requirement for the number of virtual network functions (VNFs), ahead of time. VNF requirement prediction method mostly depends on the fluctuation of network traffic load. Predicting the required number of VNFs helps the operator to manage network resources in better ways. VNF prediction method is being considered as an interesting research field for researchers. In our research, we propose VNF requirement prediction methods based on Deep Neural networks (DNN) and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks. We provide experimental results which show promising accuracy and improvement of our method, compared to machine learning approaches used before for VNF requirement prediction. network resource management techniques can be benefited enormously from our higher accuracy based approaches.

With the growing demand for data connectivity, network service providers are faced with the task of reducing their capital and operational expenses while simultaneously improving network performance and addressing the increased connectivity demand. Although network Function virtualization (NFV) has been identified as a solution, several challenges must be addressed to ensure its feasibility. In this paper, we address the virtual network Function (VNF) placement problem by developing a machine learning decision tree model that learns from the effective placement of the various VNF instances forming a Service Function Chain (SFC). The model takes several performance-related features from the network as an input and selects the placement of the various VNF instances on network servers with the objective of minimizing the delay between dependent VNF instances. The benefits of using machine learning are realized by moving away from a complex mathematical modelling of the system and towards a data-based understanding of the system. Using the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) as a use case, we evaluate our model on different data center networks and compare it to the BACON algorithm in terms of the delay between interconnected components and the total delay across the SFC. Furthermore, a time complexity analysis is performed to show the effectiveness of the model in NFV applications.

While the integration of fourth-generation (4G) networks with Edge Computing technologies would anticipate the improvements foreseen by the coming of 5G, as well as smoothen the transition to the new technology, 4G does not natively support Edge Computing. Therefore, specific functionalities for user-plane integration and isolation of tenant spaces are required for effectively deploying Edge Computing in 4G networks. This paper describes the design of the end-point between the mobile and edge environments that has been integrated in the telecom layer platform of the MATILDA Project. Such end-point, designed in a virtual network Function (VNF), allows intercepting and forwarding data and control traffic towards external Data networks. Instances of this VNF can be horizontally scaled according to a decision policy, which determines the minimum number of instances required for the current load. Results show that the latency ascribable to the VNF processing is sufficiently low to satisfy the delay budget for all 5G use cases up to 10 ms and that the decision policy based on the QoS Class Identifiers (QCIs) allows scaling with the traffic load, while still fulfilling the performance requirements of each application.

This paper addresses the implementation of Radio Resource Management (RRM) and Self-Organizing networks (SON) functions in virtualized multi-tenant small cell networks. In this context, the deployment and operation of RRM/SON functions as virtualized services facilitates the customization of the Radio Access network (RAN) on a per-tenant basis. Specifically, this paper develops the architectural and functional framework for virtualizing RRM/SON functions, together with the illustration of some examples assessing the orders of magnitude of the requirements of the involved virtual network functions (VNF).
