Modern communication networks are large, dynamic, complex, and increasingly use virtualized network infrastructure. To deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot such networks, it is essential to understand how network elements such as servers, switches, virtual machines, and virtual network functions are connected to one another, and to be able to discover communication paths between them. For network maintenance applications such as troubleshooting and service quality management, it is also essential to understand how connections change over time, and be able to pose time-travel queries to retrieve information about past network states. With the industry-wide move to Software Defined networks and virtualized network functions (VNFs) [26] [24], maintaining these inventory and topology databases becomes a critical issue. In this paper, we explore the database requirements for the management and troubleshooting of network services using VNF and SDN technologies. This work was initiated in the context of Open source ECOMP, which has been now merged into ONAP [24], the new industry-standard for managing network automation. We develop a graph-based layered network model with layers representing increasing levels of specificity, from VNFs to physical hardware. We then describe the kinds of queries required for activities such as operations management and troubleshooting. These considerations have led us to develop Nepal, a model-driven graph database system to represent and reason over network service topology and data flows within the network. Nepal has several features making it particularly applicable for querying inventory: Nepal has a strongly-typed but flexible schema to support model-driven networking;it makes graph paths a first-class object in its query system;it has sophisticated support for in-the-past queries;and it works as a layer over one or more underlying databases. We demonstrate the capabilities of Nepal by examples, discuss its model-driven query capabilities

network functions virtualization (NFV) is developed to take advantage of virtualization technologies to separate network functions from the underlying hardware appliances. This approach brings a new level of flexibility in network services deployment for rapid composition, migration and scaling based on changing traffic load and current demand, leading to a higher QoS. Moreover, it allows introducing DevOps approach in the development process resulting in reduced life-cycle and shorter time-to-market. However, in order to realize the anticipated benefits of NFV, developers and network operators need mechanisms to adequately test virtualized network functions (VNF) against different deployment scenarios and in different scales. To this end, we introduce a new library for light-weight automated functional testing of VNFs. It helps the developers to write functional tests in Python and run them on different platforms. Using the library, test developers choose which infrastructure to use, which network services and test VNFs to launch, how to interconnect them, how to trigger the test process and inspect, verify and validate the output against the expected values and conditions. Test developers can use network service packages to deploy services or can compose them in a test code using different parameters to simulate various deployment scenarios. Finally, the library can be used to set automated testing in CI/CD environments or can be used locally during the development phase. In this paper, we describe the architecture of the library, the basic workflow and give an example of testing multiple flavors of a network service using the same code.

In the network softwarization, network Function Virtualisation (NFV) has shifted the standard of network services deployment and management for telecommunication. However, the allocation of physical resources to the Virtualised network functions (VNFs) dynamically, efficiently, and autonomously is one of the key tasks to achieve this objective. network designing is a serious factor for the deployment of VNFs to create a Service Function Chaining (SFC) with efficient resource utilization and optimal path in the edge computing environment. The development of a self-driven Software-Defined network (SDN) also requires an intelligent network design, especially to find optimum routing patterns for traffic steering that meet the goals set by administrators. But unfortunately, the current network designing methods do not fulfill the desired requirement for precise estimations of related performance metrics. Recently, the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered by the research community to operate and control the network. The Graph Neural network (GNN) is adopted as an AI solution in the field of the network because GNN can understand the complex relationship between network traffic features, routing, and topology to produce an accurate estimation of relevant performance metrics. In this paper, we propose the implementation of the Knowledge-Defined networking (KDN) system based on Graph Neural network (GNN) to predict the optimal path for SFC deployment and traffic steering. The proposed system is evaluated using the complete virtualized environment which is composed of ONOS, OpenStack, and open-source MANO (OSM).

Despite the many advantages of network Function Virtualization (NFV) technology, the dependability of virtual services must be carefully addressed so that NFV can meet the requirements of commercial carriers. In particular, it is essential to provide mechanisms to ensure their correct and continuous operation. In this work we propose NHAM: an NFV High Availability Module designed within the NFV-MANO (NFV Management and Orchestration) reference model. NHAM allows the creation and management of fault-tolerant virtual network services consisting of stateful VNFs (virtualized network functions) and SFCs (Service Function Chains). The proposed architecture provides fault management, including a choice of recovery mechanisms that can be applied depending on the specific needs of each service. The solution is holistic in the sense that it does not require any modifications of the source code of VNFs/SFCs to make them fault-tolerant. The strategy is based on SFC buffer management coupled with VNF checkpoint/restore, providing high availability in a transparent way. A prototype was implemented and experimental results are presented.

The last decade has produced many important advances in virtualization of IT infrastructure. Virtual Machines, once a novelty, have become an integral component of production web applications and the foundation for cloud services. Virtual Circuits have been around even longer and are now seeing the deployment of multi-domain provisioning services. The conventional core internet routing and switching platforms are giving way to virtualized facilities including virtual routers, virtualized network functions, and even virtual switching and forwarding fabrics. © 2014 IEEE.

Software Defined networking (SDN) is a revolutionary paradigm that is maturing along with other network technologies in the next-gen trend. The separation of control and data planes in SDN enables the emergence of novel network features like centralized flow management and network programmability that encourage the introduction of new and enhanced network functions in order to improve prominent network deployment aspects such as flexibility, scalability, network-wide visibility and cost-effectiveness. Although SDN exhibits a rapid evolution that is shaping this technology as a key enabler for future implementations in heterogeneous network scenarios, namely, datacenters, ISPs, corporate, academic and home;the technology is far from being considered secure and dependable to this day which inhibits its agile adoption. In recent years, the scientific community has been attracted to explore the field of SDN security to close the gap to SDN adoption. A twofold research context has been identified: on the one hand, leveraging SDN features to enhance security;while on the other hand one can find the pursue of a secure SDN system architecture. This article includes a description of security threats that menace SDN and a list of attacks that take advantage of vulnerabilities and misconfigurations in SDN constitutive elements. Accordingly, a discussion emphasizing the duality SDN-for-security and SDN-security is also presented. A comprehensive review of state-of-the art is accompanied by a categorization of the current research literature in a taxonomy that highlights the main characteristics and contributions of each proposal. Finally, the identified urgent needs and less explored topics are used to outline the opportunities and future challenges in the field of SDN security.
