Error-sensitivity assessment of vision algorithms

A methodology is proposed for the computation of output-data errors from given input-data errors for a given computational precision for vision algorithms. The approach is based on replacement of the arithmetic types of the object-oriented language used for coding of the tested algorithm by structures describing the values and error models of the numbers represented, The method is useful both for the initial testing of any vision algorithm and for the definitive testing of algorithms for which explicit error models are not known. It is also shown how two error models, namely that of the min/max error propagation and that of local-function linearisation, can be used for assessing the errors introduced by the input data and by the hardware architecture adopted.

The present work focuses on learning how to use the hardware and software of a Time-of-Flight camera and then creating C++ programs that try to lay the basis for future ones that would be implemented in bigger applications that are able to tackle and solve the most common problems related to 3D machine vision. All the code and programs present in the thesis are born and developed with the key idea in mind that they can provide a foundation for future work as the starting point for more complex projects related to 3D computer vision and thus be implemented in applications such as bin-picking, autonomous driving, quality inspection and so on. The C++ programs developed in this thesis, along with smaller questions, address four main problems in the field of computer vision: Registration, CAD model creation, Segmentation and Object Recognition. Registration consists of aligning various 3D point clouds taken from different points of view of the same object so as to reconstruct a full 3D model of the object. CAD model creation is usually the step following Registration and it consists in creating a 3D mesh of the registered object. This mesh can be exported in AutoCAD or any other 3D CAD software to perform further studies and analysis on the object. Segmentation consists of dividing point clouds in multiple parts and pieces, which can be then studied independently. Finally, the last topic studied and developed in the thesis is Object Recognition, which consists in the ability to locate and recognize objects from a 3D point cloud.

To solve the problem of insufficient precision of gear fault diagnosis with small sample size, an adaptive floating convolutional sequence pattern neural network recognition method based on the combination of simplified Gramian Angle field and time-frequency feature images is proposed. One-dimensional data is converted to twodimensional real-time data by simplifying Gramian Angle field. The time domain data and time frequency data are mixed enhanced by fast Fourier transform to obtain feature enhanced image-like data. The feature-enhanced image dataset generated by this method has a high degree of intra-group consistency in data features, which is beneficial to fault identification. The adaptive floating convolutional sequence model is used to construct neural network to identify image-like data and improve the accuracy of gear fault diagnosis with small samples. Moreover, the diagnosis method has strong robustness and high engineering application value.

Toy vision-Guided 3D Robotic Arm in JavaScript

Modern JavaScript has the power to access the capabilities of the underlying architecture in a simple and portable manner and without installing third-party libraries. This article shows how a one-page web application can be built that connects to the camera, processes the video stream, extracts images, and detects motion. The detected motion is then used to control a 3D robotic arm rendered using Web Graphics Library within the same page. Although the scope of this paper is purely didactic, the framework can easily be extended and used in a classroom setting for experimentation with different vision algorithms.

Gestures are used in day to day life like nodding and waving without us being aware of them. It has become an important part in the communication among the humans. In the recent years new methods of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) are being developed. Some of them are based on interaction with machines through hand, head, facial expressions, voice, touch and many are still the current topic of research. However relying on just one of them reduces the accuracy of the whole HCI and is also limiting the options available to users. The objective of this paper is thus to use two of the important modes of interaction hand and head to control any application running on computer using Computer vision algorithms. From input video stream, hand is segmented and the corresponding gesture is being recognized based on the shape and pattern of movement of hand. For head gesture recognition, head is first detected and then optical flow method is used to get the movement of head which is then recognized by finite state automata. Using the user interface of the software, an operator can control any interactive application (say VLC player, Image browser etc) using hand and head gestures which in turn are automatically mapped to the mouse and keyboard events through Windows API. The proposed multimodal approach is particularly useful to communicate with computers and other electronic appliances from a distance where mouse and keyboard are not convenient to work with.

The machine vision community has expended tremendous effort in the research and development of algorithms in an effort to develop a system that is capable of seeing the world as humans do. These algorithms often focus on the accomplishment of specific tasks analogous to human vision such as scene awareness, object detection, object recognition, and object tracking. Joining forces with cognitive neuroscientists has steered much of this research towards the development of algorithms that not only accomplish the required tasks, but endeavor to do so in a biologically inspired fashion. Still, development and evaluation of these so-called neuromorphic algorithms is often done in isolation, with little regard given to the rest of the system necessary to make this human-like system a reality. This dissertation provides a framework for the current and future development of complex and highly integrated multi-algorithm vision systems. This framework not only enables the composition of such systems, but enables seamless development and integration of improved algorithmic modules. In addition to this high-level system composition framework, the Cerebrum tool, targeted at development of hardware-accelerated architectures is detailed in this work. This tool enables the creation of such hardware-based accelerators by researchers and engineers without specific or detailed knowledge of the target hardware *** addition to the framework and tools, this dissertation also details the analysis, development and evaluation of hardware accelerators for HMAX object recognition and AIM saliency detection. Armed with this intelligent framework and algorithmic accelerators, demonstrations of vision systems that leverage multiple algorithms are constructed and *** object classification, leveraging the benefits of Exemplar SVM and accelerated HMAX is shown to provide performance superior to either algorithm in isolation. PurposeThis paper aims to evaluate and compare the performance of different computer vision algorithms in the context of visual servoing for augmented robot perception and autonomy. Design/methodology/approachThe authors evaluated and compared three different approaches: a feature-based approach, a hybrid approach and a machine-learning-based approach. To evaluate the performance of the approaches, experiments were conducted in a simulated environment using the PyBullet physics simulator. The experiments included different levels of complexity, including different numbers of distractors, varying lighting conditions and highly varied object geometry. FindingsThe experimental results showed that the machine-learning-based approach outperformed the other two approaches in terms of accuracy and robustness. The approach could detect and locate objects in complex scenes with high accuracy, even in the presence of distractors and varying lighting conditions. The hybrid approach showed promising results but was less robust to changes in lighting and object appearance. The feature-based approach performed well in simple scenes but struggled in more complex ones. Originality/valueThis paper sheds light on the superiority of a hybrid algorithm that incorporates a deep neural network in a feature detector for image-based visual servoing, which demonstrates stronger robustness in object detection and location against distractors and lighting conditions.

The notion of polygonal entropy is introduced which captures the degree of nonconvexity of a polygon through a measure of polygonal visibility. We show that the entropy of a simple polygon is maximal if and only if it is convex. When ‘normalized’ the entropy measure is a number between ε (a small positive nonzero number) and 1 providing a convenient index which represents the degree of irregularity (nonconvexity) of a simple polygon. A similar but less computationally burdensome measure is also proffered. Suggested uses of the measure are: the evaluation of computational complexity of vision algorithms, pattern recognition and architectural space planning.

This paper considers the optical relative navigation method for the small satellites, describes the algorithms of the image processing and calculating the relative distance and orientation. Different methods and approaches exist but need to be adapted or improved based on robust algorithms for both detection and range of multiple space crafts. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the applicability of contemporary optoelectronic systems supported by image processing algorithms in aviation. Optoelectronic systems can support the pilot's work or the work of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operator after being installed in the cockpit of the pilot or in a ground station. The origin of the problem is related to the aspects of safe operation of the aircraft in the conditions of dynamically, changing ambient light observed by the aircraft pilot or operator monitoring the monitor at the ground station and observing the image from the camera installed on the UAV The proposed solution is to help avoid situations in which the pilot's/operators situational awareness deteriorates due to strong optical phenomena.
