A Block-Based Web IDE to Ease the Smart Contract programming Learning Curve

Smart contracts, underpinned by blockchain technology, are crucial for data modification and querying in decentralized systems. Despite their potential, mainstream adoption has been limited by the complexity of programming and lack of beginner-friendly tools. To address this, we developed SmaCly, a block-based web environment that simplifies smart contract creation through visual programming and automatic Solidity code generation. This paper discusses the initial application of SmaCly in a postgraduate course, highlighting its positive impact on learning outcomes. Findings show that SmaCly's intuitive interface and structural templates reduce coding errors and enhance understanding of Solidity. Qualitative feedback confirms that the tool aids novice developers in mastering complex concepts and provides valuable insights for future improvements, demonstrating the effectiveness of visual programming environments in education.

Previous research on the effects of live program composition in computer science education has shown mixed results;while live programming is well-received by students and can improve the program composition process in some contexts, the resulting programs may be hard to understand, potentially making the paradigm unfeasible for collaborative and general-purpose programming. In this paper, we explore to what extent programs created in Algot, a live programming language, can be understood by tertiary-level students. We conducted an experimental, within-subjects study (n = 41) measuring how well students at this level could comprehend programs composed in Algot and Python. We asked our participants to explain the programs and answer questions on them related to tracing, reverse tracing, conceptual extrapolations, and (optionally) time complexity. Despite the participants' lack of familiarity with Algot, students performed better after viewing most programs in Algot than Python, but primarily for problems involving trees and matrices. Our results contribute to the body of research on live programming in computer science (CS) education and complement recent research on the benefits of Algot for program composition, suggesting that Algot can be useful as a more general learning resource in CS tertiary education.

User-driven modelling: visualisation and systematic interaction for end-user programming

This research enables computer literate engineers to model problems in software by minimising code they need to write. Software development is difficult for many engineers as they may have no time, experience, or access to software development tools necessary to model their problems. Using a combination of modelling via use of formulae (equations) and visualisation of the way these formulae interact, it is possible to construct modelling software without requiring code. This technique of user-driven modelling/programming (UDM/P) could be applied to any problem that requires linked equations to be represented and tracked, and results from these calculated. End-user programming could be tackled by many researchers co-operating to create specific solutions to different kinds of end-user programming problems. A stepped ontology based translation process assists with progress towards a generic solution, this is first applied to engineering modelling. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Liveness is an important factor in live coding but frequently liveness focuses on high-level, textual environments. While these environments offer manifold abstraction capabilities, users of low-level dataflowprogramming environments could also benefit from increased liveness. In this work we introduce LiveCore: a macro library for the low-level dataflow environment Reaktor Core enabling live coding. LiveCore manages program state at audio rates and provides a suite of modules for musical pattern generation, sequencing and synthesis. LiveCore increases liveness in Reaktor Core from an editable dataflow program, to one with continuous audio suitable for musical performance. We reflect on the design process to discuss the qualitative differences of liveness in low-level dataflow programming, compared with other forms of live coding. We suggest that live coding in a low-level dataflow environment provides a uniquely immediate experience for the performer.

It thus imposes additional cognitive load on the already challenging design task. programming in the model is a system design strategy that embeds the act of programming in a 3D CAD model. This paper presents the argument for programming in the model and two user interface constructs that support such programming.

For decades, computing speeds seemingly doubled every 24 months by increasing the clock speed and giving software a "free ride" to better performance. This free ride, however, effectively ended by the mid-to-late 2000s. With clock speeds having plateaued and computational horsepower instead increasing due to increasing the number of cores per processor, the vision for parallel computing, which started more than 40 years ago, is a revolution that has now (ubiquitously) arrived. In addition to traditional supercomputing clusters, parallel computing with multiple cores can be found in desktops, laptops, and even mobile smartphones. This ubiquitous parallelism in hardware presents at least two major challenges: (1) difficulty in easily extracting parallel performance via current software abstractions and (2) difficulty in delivering correctness - as even without parallelism, software defects already account for up to 40 percent of system failures. Consequently, this paper presents preliminary research that reduces the learning curve to parallel programming by introducing such concepts into a visual (but currently serial) programming language called Snap!. Furthermore, the proposed visual abstractions automatically generate parallel code for the end user so as to better ensure that the resulting (text-based) code is correct.

The goal of this research is to find an algorithm that is capable of recognizing gestures drawn in a visual and gesture-driven interface used to teach introductory programming concepts. Our system combines components from Google's Blockly, a visual programming language with a drag-and-drop puzzle piece interface, and Microsoft's Xbox Kinect which is used to perform skeletal tracking. We focus on two supervised machine learning clustering algorithms, centroid matching and medoid matching, to detect gestures.

Serious games for programming provide players with some type of algorithmic mechanics to accomplish game challenges. Such mechanics maybe formally algorithmic, or in some cases not theoretically linked to strict programming constructs, although still characterized as programming-related games. We discuss a serious game with visual programming where the primary mission is the development of a simple 2d game. Its primary novelty is the lack of separate build and run cycles. There is only one game mode, with gameplay and game development being inseparable, where every game object can be clicked, live-programmed, and live-edited during play. Additionally, time may be freely rewind and replayed, undoing or redoing internally all related user actions and game state updates. During such time travels, it is allowed to drop the entire history onwards, from any given point in time, and continue from there.

Writing correct and efficient parallel programs is hard. A lack of overview leads to errors in control- and dataflow, e.g., race conditions, which are hard to find due to their nondeterministic nature. In this paper, we present a graphical programming model for parallel stream processing applications, which improves the overview by visualizing high level dataflow together with explicit and concise annotations for concurrency-related dependency information. The key idea of our approach is twofold: First, we present a powerful graphical task editor together with annotations that enable the designer to define stream properties, task dependencies, and routing information. These annotations facilitate fine-granular and correct parallelization. Second, we propose seamless integration with the safe parallel programming language Rust by providing automated code structure generation from the graphical representation, design patterns for common parallel programming constructs like filters, and a scheduling and runtime environment. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach with a network-based processing system as it is typically found in advanced firewalls.

In recent years, an increasing number of school children is beginning to learn about robotics in the classroom in order to stir their interest in STEM professions. Teachers rely on simple educational robots and intuitive programming environments and graphical programming environments have become a frequent starting point for young robotics newbies. However, currently available tools do often not sufficiently support teachers and students in the classroom. In this study, we evaluate programming environments for educational robots;our results point to the need of lowering the complexity of tools as well as of incorporating combinations of web and cloud technologies, embedded systems and communication concepts into these environments. The technical part of this work presents Open Roberta - an open source based addition to commercial educational robot environments that addresses these needs.
