In this panel, the moderator, who has expertise in computer science education and HCI, but with no ties to any particular blocks-based programming environment in particular, will provide a brief overview of the state of the field of visual programming for education generally, and blocks-based visual programming environments and the languages that go with them more specifically. As early as in 1986, blocks-based visual programming environments were conceived of and built as research studies (Glinert & Smith, 1986)). However, the last five to ten years have seen a proliferation of these kinds of programming languages. Scratch and Alice are probably the most widely known of these programming interfaces, but there are many. Among these, many share common traits: the goal of simplifying the syntax of programming, a related goal of making what were once difficult tasks relegated to arcane languages simpler, and often another related goal of opening computer programming up to a wider audience than has recently traditionally engaged in programming activities. The moderator will be followed by four panelists, representing four blocks-based programming environments that share these affordances, but which more interestingly, are distinct in a number of ways. These panelists, experts in MIT App Inventor, Scratch, Looking Glass, and ToolBlox, respectively, will each have ten minutes to discuss their respective language and the possibility-space it aims to simplify. Specifically, each language will be examined from three perspectives: the reason the tool was created, the target audience for the tool, and how the tool engages those users in computational thinking and learning to program. The moderator will then lead a substantive discussion with the audience and panel members on the material presented.

AI cloud services are available for speech synthesis, speech recognition, image and video recognition, text analysis, and machine learning. School students could use these services in a wide variety of programming projects including voice commands to robots, chatbots, audio games, and vision-based robotics. In doing so they may learn about perception, language, psychology, and the latest empowering technologies. A major obstacle to using these services in schools is that they are technically complex APIs beyond the ability of most school students. The challenge addressed in this paper is how to provide interfaces that are much easier to use and yet still supports most of the functionality of these AI services. We describe the addition of new programming blocks to the Snap! visual programming language [1] that provide easy-to-use interfaces to these services. We have developed new blocks for speech input and output and image recognition. Learning materials have been developed and preliminarily trialed with a small number of children.

Distributed dataflow systems like Spark and Flink allow to analyze large datasets using clusters of computers. These frameworks provide automatic program parallelization and manage distributed workers, including worker failures. Moreover, they provide high-level programming abstractions and execute programs efficiently. Yet, the programming abstractions remain textual while the dataflow model is essentially a graph of transformations. Thus, there is a mismatch between the presented abstraction and the underlying model here. One can also argue that developing dataflow programs with these textual abstractions requires needless amounts of coding and coding skills. A dedicated programming environment could instead allow constructing dataflow programs more interactively and visually. In this paper, we therefore investigate how visual programming can make the development of parallel dataflow programs more accessible. In particular, we built a prototypical visual programming environment for Flink, which we call Flision. Flision provides a graphical user interface for creating dataflow programs, a code generation engine that generates code for Flink, and seamless deployment to a connected cluster. Users of this environment can effectively create jobs by dragging, dropping, and visually connecting operator components. To evaluate the applicability of this approach, we interviewed ten potential users. Our impressions from this qualitative user testing strengthened our believe that visual programming can be a valuable tool for users of scalable data analysis tools.

visual programming as a technique to support users to learn programming is an active field of research. Bringing together the hot topic of Smart Environments and the visual programming paradigm we present the Block-based End user programming tool for SMart Environments (BEESM). The dedicated application domain engages users to get interested in programming. BEESM allows to learn the general purpose of programming and rapidly prototype and customize applications in the context of smart environments. This approach enables users to program smart environments, microcontrollers and mobile robots one at a time and in combination with each other. It provides a block-based rapid programming tool as a hassle-free environment for educators and engineers to make it compatible with different smart devices and environments.

programming is a popular subject in education and experts emphasize the importance of teaching programming to the children in the high school or even earlier. In this study, we used robots for teaching programming basics to the high school and college students and observed the effects of different interfaces. We used an educational robot called Thymio-II with Aseba Event Script Language (AESL), which is designed specifically for the Thymio. In this work, our hypothesis is that visual programming interfaces are more successful on learning programming and facilitate the learning with other interfaces and languages. In order to teach programming, as well as the interfaces and the robot features, we created a curriculum applicable to all interfaces. We taught students ages ranging from 15 to 24 using lecture content prepared in the form of video recordings. Students were given 30 min of lectures and at the end of each lecture students were expected to write a program according to predefined requirements. Students were divided to groups using different interfaces and we observed the difference of the learning curves of students for each programming interface. In our tests, we used original English AESL, Turkish version of AESL and a graphical interface called visual programming Language (VPL). We compared the performance of the students using the graphical icon based against the classical text based programming languages.

Structured program editors can lower the entry barrier for beginning computer science students by preventing syntax errors. However, when editors force programs to be executable after every edit, a rigid development process results. We explore the use of a separate edit-time grammar that is more permissive than the runtime grammar. This helps achieve a balance between structured editing and flexibility, particularly in live development environments. JPie is a graphical programming environment that applies this separation to the live development of Java applications. We present the design goals for JPie's edit-time grammar and describe how its implementation supports a balance between structure and flexibility. As further illustration of the benefits of a relaxed edit-time grammar, we present "mixed-mode editing," an integration of textual and graphical editing for added flexibility.

A variety of robot programming techniques exists ranging from constraint based over skill based programming to learning by demonstration. In order to extend their applicability propose to join some of these approaches. We therefore combine visual CAD based programming with skill based programming through demonstration. This constitutes the basis of the outlines strategy. We then employ human feedback through hand gestures for incremental parameter modification. We propose this approach in order to potentially lower times to production for new products and allow efficient use of robotics in low lot-sizes especially in the context of assembly for construction. We present a game creation app for tablets that builds on the popularity of video games while focusing attention on creativity and problem solving. With our app, users design and build a game by first drawing characters and objects on paper with markers and crayons, and then automatically integrate them with our app. An event-based visual programming language allows to program the game logic. In the spirit of creative play, users can jump at any point between the design, programming and test phases in order to realize their imagination. We evaluate our app with a user study to understand how gender and the use of self-made drawings influence the type of games users create and their state of flow during the process. Our results show that letting users draw their own game elements can lead to higher engagement. We also show that girls tend to spend more time programming and less time testing compared to boys, and that our app can help girls gain self-confidence.

We live in a media-rich environment. Today's technology user is accustomed to visual, interactive content but faced with challenges for authoring such content. The divide between the user and the creator grows with the greater complexity of the media. We seek to enable end-users to develop their own virtual environments through end-user programming. In particular, we are interested in helping American football coaches create digital playbooks with animated content. Such an environment requires the presentation of a large amount of information. This information can be associated with virtual agents, spatial locations, particular play formations, etc. We are currently focusing on assistive visualization techniques for both the programming and presentation of the strategy information.

Decentralized and complex systems can be powerful tools for modeling concepts in mathematics, science and engineering. StarLogo and NetLogo were the first systems to allow middle and high school children to build dynamic models from many thousands of programmable particles. This has inspired Kedama: an authoring system that simplifies the scripting and construction of massively parallel models to allow more students to join in this new rich environment. This has given rise to new user interface and programming language designs. Kedama has the following notable features: 1) Scripts in Kedama can be written in a graphical the scripting interface. & users are alleviated from syntax errors, and all program elements are visually presented to the user 2) Kedama is an extension of Squeak eToys: children who have learned to "script in the large" can use same techniques to "script in the small" with many thousands of objects. 3) The semantics and syntax are simplified but retain full power of expression. 4) The UI in Kedama is dynamic: scripts and other properties in Kedama can be dynamically modified while scripts are kept running. 5) Kedama is more pot-table, being able to run on more than two dozen types of platforms, including the most used around the world. 6) Kedama is fast. Various simulations typically run about 3 times faster than previous systems. This improvement made it possible to write different classes of examples.
