Visalizing the structure and dynamics of proteins, supramolecular assemblies, and cellular components are often key to our understanding of biological function. Here, we focus on the major approaches in imaging, analyzing, and processing biomedical data ranging from the atomic to the macro scale. Relevant biomedical applications at different length scales are chosen to illustrate and discuss the various aspects of data acquisition using multiple modalities including electron microscopy and scanning force microscopy. Moreover, powerful scientific software is presented for processing, analyzing, and visualizing heterogeneous data. Examples of using this software in the context of visualizing biological nano-machines are presented and discussed. Copyright © 2005 Humana Press Inc. There is a growing need for custom visualization applications to deal with the rising amounts of volume data to be analyzed in fields like medicine, seismology, and meteorology. visual programming techniques have been used in visualization and other fields to analyze and visualize data in an intuitive manner. However, this additional step of abstraction often results in a performance penalty during the actual rendering. In order to prevent this impact, a careful modularization of the required processing steps is necessary, which provides flexibility and good performance at the same time. In this paper, we will describe the technical foundations as well as the possible applications of such a modularization for GPU-based volume raycasting, which can be considered the state-of-the-art technique for interactive volume rendering. Based on the proposed modularization on a functional level, we will show how to integrate GPU-based volume ray-casting in a visual programming environment in such a way that a high degree of flexibility is achieved without any performance impact.

In order to effectively design nearly Zero Energy Buildings, the assessment of energy performance in the early design stages through simulation is an important, although very demanding and complex, procedure. Over the last decades, various tools and methods have been developed to address performance-related design questions, mostly using Multi-Objective Optimization Algorithms. Technological advances have revolutionized the way Architects design and think, automating complex tasks and allowing the assessment of multiple variants at the same time. In this paper, a new nZEB design workflow methodology is proposed, integrating evolutionary algorithms and energy simulation, and its capabilities and current limitations are explored. Today's computer interfaces use 2-D displays showing windows, icons and menus and support mouse interactions for handling programs and data files. The interface metaphor is that of a writing desk with (partly) overlapping sheets of documents placed on its top. Recent advances in the development of 3-D display technology give the opportunity to take the interface concept a radical stage further by breaking the design limits of the desktop metaphor. The major advantage of the envisioned ''application space'' is, that it offers an additional, immediately perceptable dimension to clearly and constantly visualize the structure and current state of interrelations between documents, videos, application programs and networked systems. In this context, we will describe the development of a visual Operating System (VOS). Under VOS, applications appear as objects in 3-D space. Users can (graphically) connect selected objects to enable communication between the respective applications. VOS includes a general concept of visual and object oriented programming for tasks ranging from, e.g., low-level programming up to high-level application configuration. In order to enable practical operation in an office or at home for many hours, the system should be very comfortable to use. Since typical 3-D equipment used, e.g., in virtual-reality applications (head-mounted displays, data goves) is rather cumbersome and straining, we suggest to use off-head displays and contact-free interaction techniques. In this article, we will introduce an autostereoscopic 3-D display and connected video based interaction techniques which allow viewpoint-depending imaging (by head tracking) and visually controlled modification of data objects and links (by gaze tracking, e.g., to pick 3-D objects just by looking at them).

Immersive authoring is a paradigm that makes Virtual Reality (VR) application development easier by allowing programmers to create VR content while immersed in the virtual environment. In this paradigm, programmers manipulate programming primitives through direct manipulation and get immediate feedback on their program's state and output. However, existing immersive authoring tools have a low ceiling;their programming primitives are intuitive but can only express a limited set of static relationships between elements in a scene. In this paper, we introduce FlowMatic, an immersive authoring tool that raises the ceiling of expressiveness by allowing programmers to specify reactive behaviors-behaviors that react to discrete events such as user actions, system timers, or collisions. FlowMatic also introduces primitives for programmatically creating and destroying new objects, for abstracting and re-using functionality, and for importing three-dimensional (3D) models. Importantly, FlowMatic uses novel visual representations to allow these primitives to be represented directly in VR. We also describe the results of a user study that illustrates the usability advantages of FlowMatic relative to a two-dimensional (2D) authoring tool and we demonstrate its expressiveness through several example applications that would be impossible to implement with existing immersive authoring tools. By combining a visual program representation with expressive programming primitives and a natural User Interface (UI) for authoring programs, FlowMatic shows how programmers can build fully interactive virtual experiences with immersive authoring.

In this paper we present a formal approach, based on meta-modelling and graph transformation, to the generation of environments for visual languages (VLs) supporting multiple views. The VL syntax is defined by means of a meta-model. Views for the VL are created by selecting the classes, associations, attributes and constraints that are part of them. Once the environment is generated, the view models are translated into a global, unique model where consistency checking and further analysis can be performed by means of graph grammars. These ideas have been newly implemented in the AToM(3) tool.

With the advent of access to digital libraries via the Internet and the addition of non-traditional data, such as imagery, the need for flexible, natural language query environments has become more urgent. This paper describes a new query interface based on the combination of natural language and visual programming techniques. The interface, entitled Drag and Drop English, or DanDE, has two components. The first component is an easy-to-use flexible interface that has the feel of a natural language interface, but has more structure and gives a user more guidance in constructing a query without sacrificing flexibility. The second component is a definition facility that allows the interface designer to specify the structure of the query language. The definition facility allows the designer to specify the syntactic structure of the language in a variation of Backus-Naur Form. The definition facility also provides the ability to specify some of the semantics of the query domain. Lastly, the definition facility allows the designer to specify the interactions between the interface and the query system.

Illustrating to young people the extent to which human attitudes interfere with the well-being of terrestrial and marine species has been one of the objectives of several environmental organizations such as the United Nations Environment Program, the World Commission on Environment and Development, among others. However, there is a need to make this illustration through mechanisms that facilitate the retention of attention, and the enthusiasm during this learning, hence the need to have playful elements as facilitators of this process. Among the ludic activities, the digital game has been used more and more as a means for information transition, and above all to influence and change behaviors. Making young people create digital games around marine litter with emphasis on plastic pollution and developing them by visual tools, is believed to be a much more engaging mechanism that will boost knowledge and behavior change in relation to this theme. The work focuses on developing and validating a tool to support the creation of digital games to promote environmental awareness, targeting young adults in higher education in the city of Pemba, Cabo-Delgado province, northern Mozambique.

Analyzing the power system network is becoming difficult task because of the volume of data that must be examined. A more serious problem than the over massive of data in analyzing the power system is the manner in which data is presented. It is difficult to visualize an electrical network by examining tabular data output. Converting the data into computer graphic presentations has solved many similar problems. The user will be able to discover problems in the network much faster and easier than traditional methods have previously allowed.
