We demonstrate visual Blocks for ML, a visual programming platform that facilitates rapid prototyping of ML-based multimedia applications. As the public version of Rapsai [3], we further integrated large language models and custom APIs into the platform. In this demonstration, we will showcase how to build interactive AI pipelines in a few drag-and-drops, how to perform interactive data augmentation, and how to integrate pipelines into Colabs. In addition, we demonstrate a wide range of community-contributed pipelines in visual Blocks for ML, covering various aspects including interactive graphics, chains of large language models, computer vision, and multi-modal applications. Finally, we encourage students, designers, and ML practitioners to contribute ML pipelines through https://***/google/visualblocks/tree/main/pipelines to inspire creative use cases. visual Blocks for ML is available at http://***.

Large language models (LLMs) support data analysis through conversational user interfaces, as exemplified in OpenAIs ChatGPT (formally known as Advanced Data Analysis or Code Interpreter). Essentially, LLMs produce code for accomplishing diverse analysis tasks. However, presenting raw code can obscure the logic and hinder user verification. To empower users with enhanced comprehension and augmented control over analysis conducted by LLMs, we propose a novel approach to transform LLM-generated code into an interactive visual representation. In the approach, users are provided with a clear, step-by-step visualization of the LLM-generated code in real time, allowing them to understand, verify, and modify individual data operations in the analysis. Our design decisions are informed by a formative study (N=8) probing into user practice and challenges. We further developed a prototype named WaitGPT and conducted a user study (N=12) to evaluate its usability and effectiveness. The findings from the user study reveal that WaitGPT facilitates monitoring and steering of data analysis performed by LLMs, enabling participants to enhance error detection and increase their overall confidence in the results.

Integrating computational thinking with K-12 science education using agent-based computation: A theoretical framework

Computational thinking (CT) draws on concepts and practices that are fundamental to computing and computer science. It includes epistemic and representational practices, such as problem representation, abstraction, decomposition, simulation, verification, and prediction. However, these practices are also central to the development of expertise in scientific and mathematical disciplines. Recently, arguments have been made in favour of integrating CT and programming into the K-12 STEM curricula. In this paper, we first present a theoretical investigation of key issues that need to be considered for integrating CT into K-12 science topics by identifying the synergies between CT and scientific expertise using a particular genre of computation: agent-based computation. We then present a critical review of the literature in educational computing, and propose a set of guidelines for designing learning environments on science topics that can jointly foster the development of computational thinking with scientific expertise. This is followed by the description of a learning environment that supports CT through modeling and simulation to help middle school students learn physics and biology. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system by discussing the results of a small study conducted in a middle school science classroom. Finally, we discuss the implications of our work for future research on developing CT-based science learning environments.

Stix is a platform managing emerging large-scale broadband wireless access (BWA) networks. It has been developed to make it easy to manage such networks for community deployments and wireless Internet service providers while keeping the network management infrastructure scalable and flexible. Stix is based on the notions of goal-oriented and in-network management. With Stix, administrators graphically specify network management activities as workflows, which are deployed at a distributed set of agents within the network that cooperate in executing those workflows and storing management information. We implement the Stix system on embedded boards and show that the implementation has a low memory footprint. Using real topology and logging data from a large-scale BWA network operator, we show that Stix is significantly more scalable (via reduction in management traffic) compared to the commonly employed centralized management approach. Finally we use two case studies to demonstrate the ease with which Stix platform can be used for carrying out network reconfiguration and performance management tasks, thereby also showing its potential as a flexible platform to realize self-management mechanisms.

In this paper we present work in progress on SiFEB, a simple, interactive and extensible robot playmate for kids intended to nurture the engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related activities through playing. SiFEB's simplified and interactive hardware and software modules present users without prior experience, with the ability to build robots without going deep in either aspect. Kids can build robots of their interest using attachable hardware modules and related programming components using an easy to understand visual programming language that resembles natural commands. The potential developers may utilize the framework provided, to build hardware and software components to the system expanding the existing capabilities. Preliminary results from the prototypes show that SiFEB has the potential of being an effective learning platform for young children in STEM related areas.

Labeled datasets are essential for supervised machine learning. Various data labeling tools have been built to collect labels in different usage scenarios. However, developing labeling tools is timeconsuming, costly, and expertise-demanding on software development. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework for data labeling and OneLabeler based on the conceptual framework to support easy building of labeling tools for diverse usage scenarios. The framework consists of common modules and states in labeling tools summarized through coding of existing tools. OneLabeler supports confguration and composition of common software modules through visual programming to build data labeling tools. A module can be a human, machine, or mixed computation procedure in data labeling. We demonstrate the expressiveness and utility of the system through ten example labeling tools built with OneLabeler. A user study with developers provides evidence that OneLabeler supports efcient building of diverse data labeling tools.

Embedded vision processing is currently ingrained into many aspects of modern life, from computer-aided surgeries to navigation of unmanned aerial vehicles. Vision processing can be described using coarse-grained data flow graphs, which were standardized by OpenVX to enable both system and kernel level optimization via separation of concerns. Notably, graph-based specification provides a gateway to a code generation engine, which can produce an optimized, hardware-specific code for deployment. Here we provide an algorithm and JAVA-MVC-based implementation of automated code generation engine for OpenVX-based vision applications, tailored to NVIDIA multiple CUDA Cores SoC Jetson TX. Our algorithm pre-processes the graph, translates it into an ordered layer-oriented data model, and produces C code, which is optimized for the Jetson TX1 and comprised of error checking and iterative execution for real time vision processing.

Agile methodologies employ light-weight development practices emphasizing a test-driven approach to the development of software systems. Modern agile development environments support this approach by providing tools that automate most of the work required to effectively deal with change, including unit testing and different forms of refactoring. lit this paper we discuss how to apply such techniques within the JOpera visual Composition Language. More precisely, we show how we used the visual language to implement a regression testing framework for compositions written in the language itself, and how we introduced support in the visual environment for refactorings such as renaming, synchronization of set-vice interface changes, and extraction/inlining across different levels of nesting. This is done in the context of the Web service composition tools provided with the JOpera for Eclipse research platform.

DECS is a meta-CASE tool that generates interactive software design diagram editors based on specifications provided by a tool designer. A specification consists of a set of editor element types (vertices, edges) plus constraints on the use of those types. We present visually-oriented techniques for constraint definition and the language used for this purpose. We argue that the DECS approach offers flexibility and reduces the complexity of the constraint specification task.

As IoT and robotics applications continue to become increasingly complex and decentralized, there is an increase in the difficulty of verifying requirements such as guarantees of reliability, efficiency, and correctness of the entire system. Modern IoT and robotics research and applications employ a variety of technologies to accommodate the distribution of real world IoT devices. Many of these technologies support the orchestration of these devices with concurrent computation and workflow-based processing, e.g., Intel Service Orchestration Layer. We developed a new workflow-based programming language VIPLE (visual IoT/Robotics programming Language Environment), which supports the orchestration of decentralized IoT and robotics devices through concurrent computation. VIPLE has been used by many universities for teaching robotics programming, event-driven computing, service-oriented computing, and parallel computing concepts. Historically, simple single threaded applications could be verified by employing formal systems such as Hoare logic. It is difficult to verify parallel and distributed computing. In our recent research, we developed a novel system to verify the semantics and other requirements of decentralized applications written in VIPLE. This system is developed using a combination of the techniques offered in Hoare logic and Rely-Guarantee logic, and it is applied using the automatically generated Pi-Calculus representation of VIPLE applications. This paper focuses on the foundations of this system, its ability to handle concurrent computing and decentralized applications, as well as its ability to support automated verification and semantic analysis.
