Implementation of Facility Management for Port Infrastructure through the Use of UAVs, Photogrammetry and BIM

The maintenance of port infrastructures presents difficulties due to their location: an aggressive environment or the variability of the waves can cause progressive deterioration. Maritime conditions make inspections difficult and, added to the lack of use of efficient tools for the management of assets, planning maintenance, important to ensure operability throughout the life cycle of port infrastructures, is generally not a priority. In view of these challenges, this research proposes a methodology for the creation of a port infrastructure asset management tool, generated based on the Design Science Research Method (DSRM), in line with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and digitization trends in the infrastructure sector. The proposal provides workflows and recommendations for the survey of port infrastructures from UAVs, the reconstruction of digital models by photogrammetry (due to scarce technical documentation), and the reconstruction of BIM models. Along with this, the bidirectional linking of traditional asset management spreadsheets with BIM models is proposed, by visual programming, allowing easy visualization of the status and maintenance requirements. This methodology was applied to a port infrastructure, where the methodology demonstrated the correct functionality of the asset management tool, which allows a constant up-dating of information regarding the structural state of the elements and the necessary maintenance activities.

The project of public spaces, as ideal place, needs a high investment. The opening of licitations for professionals of other states, different from where the implantation will be made, can bring negative consequences in the projected urban furniture. This happens because these professionals plan, many times, in agreement with the experiences of their local city, generating urban furniture out of the context with respect to cultural standard, visual identity of the city, ideal installation, access of the universal user and the type of more convenient material, for example. Due to it this, this research aims to investigate and to generate tools for professionals that work with urban furniture. The ABNT, through the NBR9383, divides the urban furniture in categories. The focus of this work is the research, through analyses and interpretations of historical archives, photographs and data of public managers, the Infrastructure, Information and visual Communication category, specifically in what it says respect to the public place and signalling plates. A methodology for urban furniture project is presented, exemplified by the evolution of a quiz and the graphic design to create a visual identity in the "Street of the Antiquários" in Porto Alegre, with the production of application "Geraplaca", to help the designers in the creation of signaling plates and street plate of standardized form with respect to the choice of the letter, diagramming, production comments, finishing and installation. This thesis presents a graphic model, supported by a web tool, called Conceptual Block (BC), which aims to act in the design of teaching and learning . In the teaching aspect, the use of technologies based on the fit between graphic elements is explored to support the teaching didactic planning stage, while on the learning side a graphic model that favors meaningful learning is presented from the process of hierarchizing concepts and educational resources. For that, a graphic vocabulary based on a visual programming Language (LPV) and anchored in the Theory of Meaningful Learning (TAS) is presented, with a strong bond to the theoretical construct of Learning Trajectories. Such graphical notation makes use of elements that relate through the fitting between blocks, allowing to visually represent the conception of concepts, learning paths, educational resources, assessments, and their relationships at the level of interdependence. The relationship between artifacts from a hierarchy gives rise to what is called modelling of teaching and learning, allowing a macro view of both didactic planning and student learning. To demonstrate the viability of the model, two experiments with teachers and two experiments with students were carried out. The first experiment with teachers aimed to evaluate aspects related to the acceptance of technology, and the second to analyze the effects of its use in the didactic planning process. The results of the experiments with teachers point out that the model is able to reliably represent the conceptual relationships existing in a teaching plan, being considered, in the perception of the participants, as a useful tool to support the didactic planning stage. The model promoted efficient reflection on planning processes, where modeling allows to establish conceptual relationships about the teaching plan, and this, in turn, provides reflections on the planned learning trajectory. Retrofitting building envelope thermal performance is crucial to ensure adequate interior thermal com-fort of the building, minimize cooling load rate and, therefore, reduce overall building energy consump-tion. The retrofit process of an existing building envelope involves the design team selecting the best performing building materials and components based on various design variables and predefined design objectives. Worldwide, an overall thermal transfer value (OTTV) metric has been developed and used for assessing heat transfer through the building envelope. However, the application of OTTV implicates deal-ing with many design variables and much information, which makes the design decision-making process time-consuming and complicated. Furthermore, selecting the most appropriate design alternative in terms of OTTV performance while considering the most cost-effective design option could be a very chal-lenging task. Therefore, this research proposes a method for retrofitting building information modelling (RBIM) to achieve a tradeoff design set between two conflicting objectives, namely minimizing OTTV and minimizing the retrofit cost. The prototype system derived from this method integrates BIM authoring tools (e.g., Autodesk Revit (R)), visual scripting (e.g., Dynamo), and a non-dominated sorting genetic algo-rithm (NSGA-II) customized in MATLAB (R). The applicability of the proposed system is validated with a case study of an office building. The results show that the developed system provides a valuable design decision support system for retrofitting building envelope thermal performance while considering the retrofit cost. A Study of Free-Form Shape Rationalization Using Biomimicry as Inspiration

Bridging the gap between the material and geometrical aspects of a structure is critical in lightweight construction. Throughout the history of structural development, shape rationalization has been of prime focus for designers and architects, with biological forms being a major source of inspiration. In this work, an attempt is made to integrate different phases of design, construction, and fabrication under a single framework of parametric modeling with the help of visual programming. The idea is to offer a novel free-form shape rationalization process that can be realized with unidirectional materials. Taking inspiration from the growth of a plant, we established a relationship between form and force, which can be translated into different shapes using mathematical operators. Different prototypes of generated shapes were constructed using a combination of existing manufacturing processes to test the validity of the concept in both isotropic and anisotropic material domains. Moreover, for each material/manufacturing combination, generated geometrical shapes were compared with other equivalent and more conventional geometrical constructions, with compressive load-test results being the qualitative measure for each use case. Eventually, a 6-axis robot emulator was integrated with the setup, and corresponding adjustments were made such that a true free-form geometry could be visualized in a 3D space, thus closing the loop of digital fabrication.

A Method to Introduce Building Performance Simulation to Beginners

Competence in performing Building Performance Simulations (BPS) is a fundamental asset for an energy specialist. However, teaching BPS to new students can be challenging, often due to the overwhelming capabilities of the software. The consequences for students are frustration and lack of confidence using the software, dividing group work based on previous expertise and, most importantly, the inability to predict and critically analyse results due to the superficial understanding of simulations. This paper presents and evaluates a simple method named 'control method' which is intended to introduce BPS in classes where students have a limited experience working with BPS, significantly different educational backgrounds, and where the time to teach BPS in class is limited. The method is built around the Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes taxonomy. It aims to provide the students with a basic understanding of the input-output relationship between parameters, prompting the use of BPS independently during their individual study time. The application of the method is evaluated with two survey-based studies. The findings suggest that the method prompts higher level thinking in BPS and collaborative learning in groups. Further investigation is needed to verify if students' ability to predict results is also increased.

Exploring alternatives with Unreal Engine's Blueprints visual Scripting System

We present BPAlt - a system which allows game developers to create and manage alternatives for Unreal Engine's Blueprints visual Scripting System. BPAlt allows the user to create, save, organize and swap Blueprint alternatives for rapid testing and experimentation. BPAlt also supports level alternatives, alternatives of alternatives through alternative scenarios, and allows merging of alternatives. We conducted a preliminary user study with 10 moderately skilled participants where we compared the usability, usefulness and creativity support of BPAlt to Unreal Engine alone for prototyping alternatives of game objects and mechanics in four different games. The findings suggest that the support for alternatives with the main features of BPAlt is beneficial in the game developers' workflow as it supports exploration particularly well.

A digital tool based on code indicators to assess the seismic behaviour of existing masonry structures: Application to Croatian residential buildings

This paper proposes a methodology to define code-based indicators of the seismic behaviour of existing masonry structures. Given the geometrical information about the structure under investigation, the proposed method performs real-time structural checks according to the EN 1998-1 - "General rules, seismic actions and rules for buildings". Then, modal analysis is performed to assess the structure's dynamic behaviour under investigation and to assist the user in defining retrofit measures. In this study, 103 masonry buildings located in Zagreb are analysed, accounting for the cross-sectional area of load-bearing walls, geometric requirements for shear walls, regularity of plan configuration and its symmetry, torsional effects induced by the distance of the centres of mass and stiffnesses, and modal analysis. The workflow is implemented into the environment offered by Rhino3D and Grasshopper, which allows for the parametric handle of a large set of information through object-oriented scripts, and it can be valuable for both pre-earthquake and post-earthquake assessments of masonry buildings.

The introduction of Digital Twin (DT) technology has sparked interest in virtual replication of physical assets and processes. However, to fully capitalize on DT's potential, we need robust and scalable frontend solutions. This study proposes an innovative approach to overcome the limitations of traditional monolithic frontend frameworks by leveraging micro -frontend technologies. Our goal is to enable seamless connectivity between DTs and develop tailored presentation layers by decomposing complex systems into modular web -based DTs. Additionally, our framework tackles the challenges posed by multi-vendor elements within DTs and facilitates service and virtual environment orchestration for seamless integration and operation, enabling real-time data exchange between virtual models and physical machinery. Insights from its implementation across various applications, including training, monitoring, and control, shed light on its advantages and limitations. This research aims to revolutionize DT creation and management by introducing a scalable and adaptable framework designed to enable Web 3D for Industry and Manufacturing. By integrating cutting-edge micro -frontend technologies, our approach seeks to enhance maintainability, efficiency, and productivity. However, potential limitations such as code duplication and app payload concerns must be acknowledged. Future research will address these limitations to broaden applicability and improve performance. Overall, our proposed framework offers promising solutions to many challenges in industrial settings, paving the way for more efficient and effective DT deployment and management.

Density visualization Pipeline: A Tool for Cellular and Network Density visualization and Analysis

Neuron classification is an important component in analyzing network structure and quantifying the effect of neuron topology on signal processing. Current quantification and classification approaches rely on morphology projection onto lower-dimensional spaces. In this paper a 3D visualization and quantification tool is presented. The Density visualization Pipeline (DVP) computes, visualizes and quantifies the density distribution, i.e., the "mass" of interneurons. We use the DVP to characterize and classify a set of GABAergic interneurons. Classification of GABAergic interneurons is of crucial importance to understand on the one hand their various functions and on the other hand their ubiquitous appearance in the neocortex. 3D density map visualization and projection to the one-dimensional x, y, z subspaces show a clear distinction between the studied cells, based on these metrics. The DVP can be coupled to computational studies of the behavior of neurons and networks, in which network topology information is derived from DVP information. The DVP reads common neuromorphological file formats, e.g., NeurolucidaXMLfiles,*** and plainASCIIfiles. Full 3D visualization and projections of the density to 1D and 2D manifolds are supported by the DVP. All routines are embedded within the visual programming IDE VRL-Studio for Java which allows the definition and rapid modification of analysis workflows.
