The software package "AVS/Express" provides tools for the visualization of complex scientific data however also allows researchers to create experimental data representations. Field data interpretation applications are constructed using a visual programming environment, and includes graphical user interface tools (GUI). AVS/Express presents a screen giving overall control of the operating paradigm. Called the "network editor", it contains iconic representations of programme modules. Coloured lines connecting the modules represent data and control relationships in the application. Unlike other programming environments, no distinction is made between library components and running versions of these components, and dynamic changes of the running programme is allowed. The modules in the network editor are managed by the system provided object manager. Control, messages, and shared data areas are managed by the object manager. The objects defined in the system, as well as the visual programming system and the object manager, are based on object oriented concepts. How the system behaves with regards to a traditional C++ program development environment is summarised.

This workshop introduces a new educational programming environment Pencil Code, which helps bridge the learning gap between visual programming and text-based coding. The free open-source online tool allows students to work with programs using either blocks or Coffeescript or Javascript text code. Students can switch between visual and text modes at any *** workshop will begin with a collaborative discussion of the opportunities, challenges, and differences presented when learning with block code and moving to text code. Then we will give a short presentation of how Pencil Code is used in classrooms, with some preliminary *** main part of the workshop is a hands-on activity where participants gain experience with Pencil Code. Participants will use the tool with lessons in a curriculum framework, for teaching functions and interactivity using both text code and block code. Finally, there will be a discussion of best practices for teaching students in the transition, and an opportunity to create your own lessons using Pencil Code or other *** will come away with an understanding the issues faced by students transitioning to text code for the first time, and they will gain practical experience with teaching lessons with Pencil Code. Transcriptional profiling methods have been utilized in the analysis of various biological processes in Dictyostelium. Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing have increased the resolution and the dynamic range of transcriptional profiling. Here we describe the utility of RNA sequencing with the Illumina technology for production of transcriptional profiles. NetsBlox (https://***) is a web-based collaborative learning environment extending Snap! with a few carefully selected abstractions that enable students to create distributed applications. These include online multi-player games and client-server applications that access online STEAM data such as maps, weather, earthquakes, movie information, etc. The distributed computing abstractions supported by NetsBlox also make it possible to write robot control programs. These programs issue wireless commands to the robots which in turn reply with acknowledgements and sensor readings. The programs run in the browser making debugging much easier and eliminating the need to download anything to the robots. Furthermore, the environment makes it possible for other users to eavesdrop on the wireless messages and hijack the robots of others. This provides an excellent motivation for cybersecurity and makes it easy to teach it in a hands-on manner. We have created a cybersecurity curriculum for a week-long summer camp for high school students. Lessons include Denial of Service attacks, their detection and mitigation, cryptography, secure key exchange, replay attacks, etc. Each day student teams solve challenge problems that their robots have to carry out while under cyber-attack by the other participants. This technology demonstration is a companion to the paper "Teaching Cybersecurity with Networked Robots." It will provide the audience with a more practical view of this novel approach to hands-on cybersecurity education.

Bioimage informatics has emerged as a new interdisciplinary research endeavor for bringing the power of computational and mathematical sciences into the biological imaging arena. We describe an open-source software platform, Icy, that proposes a comprehensive framework for easy algorithm development and deployment fostering community-oriented efforts. Icy offers a platform to share and publish collaborative algorithm developments, while promoting re-usability and code sharing to ease the development of new algorithms, and simplifying user's feedback and support through a community web site.

The existence of Pareto effect on mobile applications download [1] may imply that 80% or more of the applications available in the online stores are not meeting end-users' needs. This situation may get worse as more developers are needed for mobile enterprise solutions [2]. The solution proposed in this paper, the Socialisable Mobile App Builder, aims to provide an alternative approach in creating mobile applications for end-users. This product not only allows non-programmers to create personalized apps that satisfy individual needs but also incorporates a sharing framework, hence "socialisable", which allows the creators to easily notify his contacts and share the apps with them. The core of this product is an application server that stores the personalization and distribution functions. The impending success of this product may then shift the current mobile app usage paradigm from a game-centric one to a social- and productive-centric one [3].

The Unit framework uses a dataflow programming language to describe interaction techniques for highly interactive environments, such as augmented, mixed, and virtual reality. Unit places interaction techniques in an abstraction layer between the input devices and the application, which allows the application developer to separate application functionality from interaction techniques and ***'s modular approach leads to the design of reusable application-independent interaction control components, portions of which can be distributed across different machines. Unit makes it possible at run time to experiment with interaction technique behavior, as well as to switch among different input device configurations. We provide both a visual interface and a programming API for the specification of the dataflow. To demonstrate how Unit works and to show the benefits to the interaction design process, we describe a few interaction techniques implemented using Unit. We also show how Unit's distribution mechanism can offload CPU intensive operations, as well as avoid costly special-purpose hardware in experimental setups.

It is summer; subject areas must be entertaining and relevant. Can we stay ahead of the tech-savvy teens with our budget constraints? Robots and storytelling have long been used; how do we innovate and spark interest, throughout the year? We have designed "Pomelo", an interactive robot that teaches children basic algorithmic skills and enhances classroom collaboration through games. Pomelo looks like a friendly dog with a screen displaying its eyes and cooperates with the students through vision and speech. Pomelo becomes a part of the class instead of merely being a second teacher by interacting with children in the same way children interact with each other, like "Robovie" [1]. Ultimately, Pomelo will encourage kids to use technology as an interactive learning tool instead of a form of addictive entertainment while creating a more cooperative and social classroom environment.

Computer and computational scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are studying and designing collaborative problem solving environments (CPSEs) for scientific computing in various domains. Where most scientific computing efforts focus at the level of the scientific codes, file systems, data archives, and networked computers, our analysis and design efforts are aimed at developing enabling technologies that are directly meaningful and relevant to domain scientist at the level of the practice and the science. We seek to characterize the nature of scientific problem solving and look for innovative ways to improve it. Moreover, we aim to glimpse beyond current systems and technical limitations to derive a design that expresses the scientist's own perspective on research activities, processes, and resources. The product of our analysis and design work is a conceptual scientific CPSE prototype that specifies a complete simulation and modeling user environment and a suite of high-level problem solving tools.
