Basic programming is a fundamental subject that contains basic materials of programming algorithms as well as the design and developing programs using programming languages. Based on observations in Vocational High School at Indonesia, discovered some problems in the learning process of basic programming subject. Students are too focus with syntax errors, operating procedures and instructions of the programming language rather than understanding and practicing the related algorithms. Furthermore, learning resources used in the class are text modules which are not interactive and don't visualize abstract concept of programming language which could help students to understand the subject better. This research aims to design and improve visual programming environment as Learning Support System on basic programming subjects. With this, students could put more focus in practicing design algorithms. It would be easy to sharpen their knowledge and understanding about basic programming without having to suffer from problems mentioned before.

This paper presents the findings of a study conducted in the state-funded Infant, Primary and Secondary School Santísima Trinidad in Salamanca. The main objectives of the research were, to evaluate the use of the visual programming environment, Lego Education WeDo, in natural science and to know the benefits of the use of this tool to teach abstract concepts, solve problems and motivate students. In order to achieve these objectives, we used the case study method since we focused on individuals who represented the phenomenon of our interest, and explored and investigated in depth the phenomenon in its natural context bounded by time and space. In the research were involved a teacher and fifty-two students of 4th grade of primary education. The study found that the project developed was effective to help students to achieve the learning objectives of the unit, and also to begin building, coding and programming 3D models. The research showed the teacher’ fundamental role as a guide and students’ active role as builders, programmers, or presenters. There were evidences of the possibilities offered to acquire the skills of critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, reflection, collaboration, communication, and time management. Due to the positive results obtained in this study, it is recommended to incorporate computational thinking in primary education and in core content areas since it is fundamental in the current society. © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

visual programming environments such as Scratch and Alice contributed to lowering the barrier to computer programming. They use virtual characters that users can manipulate with code, enabling creative activities, such as creating animations and interactive games and stories. We introduce CodeToon, a new visual programming environment that uses comics to visualize code. In the environment, users can generate stories from code and produce comics. We showcase the environment, the authoring process, how teachers and students can use it to teach and learn programming, and the benefits of using comics as the visual representation. Expected Audience: Instructors at various levels (K-12 to undergraduate) interested in improving their programming courses with comics; researchers interested in the coding strip research.

Physical objects (such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) or model cars) can be used in place of abstract variables in order to develop an intuitive understanding of a program's behavior and to generate interest in programming. The AT visual programming environment was developed with functionality to control external hardware. This was accompanied by teaching materials which express the execution of a program using this functionality in terms of turning LEDs on/off. These materials were introduced in university classes and the students' attitude towards programming was assessed before and after the classes using a questionnaire. The results suggest that these materials can increase students' motivation to learn programming.

End-User programming tools for robots typically allow endusers to combine macrobehaviors to design the behavior of a robot. Experienced developers are required to write these macrobehaviors. We present an approach for programming robots called Reactive Robot programming (RRP). RRP allows end-users to construct macrobehaviors with minimal support from experienced developers by using uniform operators and clear separation between sensing, processing and actuation. The implemented approach consists of a visual programming environment (VPE) and a robot architecture. In this paper we describe the VPE and robot architecture as well as present results from a pilot user study.

Robots are becoming interactive and robust enough to be adopted outside laboratories and in industrial scenarios as well as interacting with humans in social activities. However, the design of engaging robot - based applications requires the availability of usable, flexible and accessible development frameworks, which can be adopted and mastered by researchers and practitioners in social sciences and adult end users as a whole. This paper surveys visual programming environments aimed at enabling a paradigm fos- tering the so-called End -User Development of applications involving robots with social capabilities. The focus of this article is on those visual programming environments that are designed to support social re- search goals as well as to cater for professional needs of people not trained in more traditional text -based computer programming languages. This survey excludes interfaces aimed at supporting expert program- mers, at allowing industrial robots to perform typical industrial tasks (such as pick and place operations), and at teaching children how to code. After having performed a systematic search, sixteen programming environments have been included in this survey. Our goal is two -fold: first, to present these software tools with their technical features and Authoring Artificial Intelligence modeling approaches, and second, to present open challenges in the development of visual programming environments for end users and social researchers, which can be informative and valuable to the community. The results show that the most recent such tools are adopting distributed and Component -Based Software Engineering approaches and web technologies. However, few of them have been designed to enable the independence of end users from high-tech scribes. Moreover, findings indicate the need for (i) more objective and comparative evaluations, as well as usability and user experience studies with real end users;and (ii) validations of these tools for designing app

Banking legacy systems intensively exchange messages in electronic format. Such systems are, for their nature, difficult to update and maintain. As a consequence, the introduction of new types of messages is a hard task. Adding new functionalities requires custom coding and software reuse is seen as a key to obtain a better time-to-masket factor, risk and cost reduction. In this paper we describe the architecture and part of the implementation of the ***. visual System, an Interbanking Network Information System that lets us generate gateways for the exchange of electronic messages among banking legacy systems and supports software reuse. In particular, the SLRE visual system contains a visual programming environment that allows us to obtain a rapid development of the message handling functions. This environment implements a visual programming Language UVG that allows a programmer to reuse COBOL routines.

An XML-based quality of service enabling language for the Web

In this paper, we introduce an XML-based hierarchical QoS markup language, called HQML, to enhance distributed multimedia applications on the World Wide Web (WWW) with quality of service (QoS) capability. The design of HQML is based on two observations: (1) the absence of a systematic QoS specification language, that can be used by distributed multimedia applications on the WWW to utilize the state-of-the-art QoS management technology and (2) the power and popularity of XML to deliver richly structured contents over the Web. HQML allows distributed multimedia applications to specify all kinds of application-specific QoS policies and requirements. During runtime, the HQML Executor translates the HQML file into desired data structures and cooperates with the QoS proxies that assist applications in end-to-end QoS negotiation, setup and enforcement. In order to make QoS services tailored toward user preferences and meet the challenges of uncertainty in the distributed heterogeneous environments, the design of HQML is featured as interactive and flexible. In order to allow application developers to create HQML specifications correctly and easily, we have designed and developed a unified visual QoS programming environment, called QoSTalk. In QoSTalk, we adopt a grammatical approach to perform consistency check on the visual QoS specifications and generate HQML files automatically. Finally, we introduce the distributed QoS compiler, which performs the automatic mappings between application- and resource-level QoS parameters to relieve the application developer of the burden of dealing with low-level QoS specifications. Selection of Learning Apps to Promote Critical Thinking in programming Students using Fuzzy TOPSIS

The aim of this research was to use intelligent decision support systems to obtain student-centred preferences for learning applications to promote critical thinking in first year programming students. This study focuses on the visual programming environment and critical thinking as the gateway skill for student success in understanding programming. Twenty-five critical thinking criteria were synthesized from the literature. As a quantitative study, 217 randomly selected students from an approximate target population of 500 programming students to rate four learning Apps, namely, Scratch, Alice, Blockly and MIT App Inventor, against critical thinking criteria to establish the App that best promotes critical thinking among first year programming students. There were 175 responses received from the 217 randomly chosen programming students who willingly contributed to the study. Consequently, the distinctiveness of this paper lies in its use of the Fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Situation) multi-criteria decision-making algorithm to rank criteria for critical thinking, calculate their weights on the basis of informed opinion and hence scientifically deduce the best rated App among the available alternatives that promote critical thinking among first year programming students. The results showed that Scratch promoted critical thinking skills the best in first year programming students whilst Blockly promoted critical thinking skills the least. As a contribution to the study, policy-makers and academic staff can be potentially supported to make informed decisions about the types of learning Apps to consider for students when confronted with multiple selection criteria.

Nowadays embedded systems solve tasks in various domains (avionics, space industry, automotive, mobile devices, domestic appliances and so on). Moreover, these tasks are composed in various concepts: IoT, cyber-physical systems etc. Different classes of problems of the market and its needs make manufacturers of embedded systems to design heterogeneous many/multi core hardware platforms. Such platforms includes dozens of different cores: CPU, GPU, DSP, FPGA etc. Additionally, there is a high pressure of time to market. That makes them incredibly hard to program, especially in case when more and more domain experts are involved in the solution development process. For example, domain expert has knowledge in the area of image recognition or signal processing, but usually does not fully understand the specificity of programming for various kinds of hardware cores. In this article, we propose the complex technology and tools that allows involving domain experts in software development for embedded systems. The proposed technology has various aspects and abilities that can be used to build verifiable and portable software for a wide range of heterogeneous embedded platforms.
