This paper explores the use of data analytics for identifying creativity in visual programming. visual programming environments are increasingly included in the schools curriculum. Their potential for promoting creative thinking in students is an important factor in their adoption. However, there does not exist a standard approach for detecting creativity in students' programming behavior, and analyzing programs manually requires human expertise and is time consuming. This work provides a computational tool for measuring creativity in visual programming that combines theory from the literature with data mining approaches. It adapts classical dimensions of creative processes to our setting, and considers new aspects such as visual elements of the visual programming projects. We apply our approach to the Scratch programming environment, measuring the creativity score of hundreds of projects. We show a preliminary comparison between our metrics and teacher ratings.

The visual Language Compiler-Compiler (VLCC) is a grammar-based graphical system for the automatic generation of visual programming environments. In this paper the theoretical and algorithmic issues of VLCC are discussed in detail. The parsing methodology we present is based on the "positional grammar" model. Positional grammars naturally extend context-free grammars by considering new relations in addition to string concatenation. Thanks to this, most of the results from LR parsing can be extended to the positional grammars inheriting the well known LR technique efficiency. In particular, we provide algorithms to implement a YACC-like tool embedded in the VLCC system for automatic compiler generation of visual languages described by positional grammars.

Since Seymour Papert's work with the Logo programming language in the 1960s, there has been a prevailing belief in the effectiveness of visual programming environments for teaching programming to children and novices. As these platforms evolved and became more prevalent, using block programming to teach children and beginners became increasingly more common. However, modern block programming platforms like Scratch and *** excessively restrict educators by not allowing them to create custom exercises in the platform. They also tend to make programming a solo activity, not allowing for collaboration and cooperation between learners (Scratch is an exception in this regard). Additionally, they are usually located in standalone websites instead of being implemented in locations that students already frequent regularly. Having identified these gaps in the field of block programming environments, this paper proposes NextBlocks, a new block programming platform implemented as a Moodle plugin. This platform enables educators to create custom exercises, emphasizing social perception and collaboration features. It supports features that are uncommon in block programming environments, contributing to a more interactive and engaging learning experience. Furthermore, being integrated into the Moodle Learning Management System makes NextBlocks more easily accessible within the educational framework. As an open-source platform, besides solving current challenges, it can also serve as a foundation for future expansion by the education community. This paper explores some of the unique features of NextBlocks, presents a case study on the platform, and discusses its potential contributions to enhancing programming education for beginners within a collaborative learning environment.

Evaluating outputs of large language models (LLMs) is challenging, requiring making-and making sense of-many responses. Yet tools that go beyond basic prompting tend to require knowledge of programming APIs, focus on narrow domains, or are closed-source. We present ChainForge, an open-source visual toolkit for prompt engineering and on-demand hypothesis testing of text generation LLMs. ChainForge provides a graphical interface for comparison of responses across models and prompt variations. Our system was designed to support three tasks: model selection, prompt template design, and hypothesis testing (e.g., auditing). We released ChainForge early in its development and iterated on its design with academics and online users. Through in-lab and interview studies, we find that a range of people could use ChainForge to investigate hypotheses that matter to them, including in real-world settings. We identify three modes of prompt engineering and LLM hypothesis testing: opportunistic exploration, limited evaluation, and iterative refinement.

Having taught software development at tertiary level for the past 20 years, the author has found that one of the key concepts that students struggle with is to progress from programming basic constructs like FOR-loops to solving real engineering problems. Once students have mastered the basic programming constructs they fall into the rut of the cookie-cutters due to the lack of "seeing" the bridge between theory and practice or in this case construct and application. At Tshwane University of Technology the focus is on vocational training and solving this dilemma is key to the University's mission. Having exhausted efforts in promoting the philosophy of Logical Thinking, Analyzing Sequential Actions and visual programming environments a new initiative in sustainable engineering training is making new inroads to addressing this issue. A new visual simulated virtual world has been created where students now have to write control software to manipulate items within this virtual world. Access to the simulated world can either be through a computer terminal connected to the World Wide Web or through an application running on an Android platform. Together with an artificial intelligent tutoring platform the engagement of students with the virtual world is showing that students are crossing over to become programmers of note and no longer mere cookie-cutters.

In the current paper we propose a framework for designing interactive content to make future e-books more dynamic. The problem with typical e-books today is that they seem to have a lack of interactivity. Considering the rapid advancement of digital technology there are many opportunities to change this situation. We focus on using the multimedia authoring tool Scratch as an option to create interactive content. The Scratch platform is valuable because content can be easily created, shared, embedded in websites and even possibly embedded in future e-books. Thus it opens up a possibility for making e-books more interactive and dynamic. Scratch by its very nature also promotes the constructivist pedagogy of learning by design. The framework we propose for designing interactive Scratch content was derived from creating a specific Scratch model to teach biology content. However, the framework is a promising start to producing interactive content that can apply potentially to any subject.

Rapid delivery strategies strive to balance critical performance qualities vs. reducing the time between an idea and deployment of a software implementation of that idea. For industrial software solutions that encapsulate expertise in deliverable components, technical SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) with ideas and knowledge have traditionally partnered as requirements providers with software development teams. These human processes are not optimally fast, are vulnerable to errors in translating or interpreting requirements, and do not scale when software teams need to integrate the knowledge of many SMEs into multiple software solutions and deployments. To address these limitations, ABB has pursued an industrial research initiative for innovative SME toolsets with focus on two goals: to accelerate the creation, evolution, reuse, and delivery of expert algorithms, and to streamline the deployment of these algorithms into releases and fielded solutions. The vision underpinning the initiative is to empower technical SMEs as "end-user developers" to convert their knowledge into reusable software solution components without having to learn, perform, or partner on traditional software development, integration, or deployment. In this paper, we summarize our experiences and lessons learned to date from this initiative, key continuing challenges, and some positional thoughts on how end-user development by technical SMEs aligns with emerging approaches for rapid delivery and evolution.

The description of an innovative framework built on top of Web based visual programming environment is the primary aim of this contribution. In the last decade, many frameworks oriented to visual languages have been introduced in literature to improve the skill on programming languages, but at the best of our knowledge, no framework has been specially designed to support collaborative work on heterogeneous distributed environments. Therefore, SIRENE introduces a new framework in which beginners and experts can cooperate to develop algorithms by using a visual and iconic paradigm. Students, in the classroom or connected from everywhere, can he involved into the definition of the algorithm, can asynchronously modify the common working space, show a visual function to expert, thus the server hosts a shared space in which the algorithms can be visualised and modified by all of the SIRENE clients. SIRENE is primarily a visual framework oriented to collaborative approaches in which each user can visualise the evolution or implementation of some algorithms and modify it during its development by other users.

Google's App Inventor for Android (AIA) is a visual programming environment for creating mobile phone applications that is designed to be accessible and appealing to college non-majors taking introductory courses in computer science. Specifically, AIA provides a development environment similar to Star Logo TNG [7], Scratch [5], and Alice [2] but enabling users to create mobile applications incorporating social networking, location awareness, and Web-based services for Google's Android platform [1]. Faculty at twelve different colleges and universities used AIA in a wide range of introductory computer science courses for non-majors in the fall of 2009. After a short visual introduction to AIA, panelists from four of these schools will present: their different curricular approaches ways in which AIA was successful or unsuccessful in helping them meet their educational goals " projects created by their students what they learned from their experiences that can be applied to other introductory computer science courses whether AIA was effective in interesting students who would otherwise not take computer science courses results of pre- and post-surveys of the students
