Engaging underrepresented populations of women and minorities in Computer Science (CS) represents our greatest untapped resource for increasing the STEM workforce. In recent years, tremendous efforts have been geared towards developing learning materials to increase the interest of underrepresented students in CS. More recently, CS education researchers are beginning to recognize the need to apply the learning sciences to develop age-and grade-appropriate curricula and pedagogies for developing computing competencies among children. One effective approach to build learning competencies among young underrepresented students is through Collaborative Learning, which is an educational approach that involves groups of learners working together to solve a problem or create a product. Our goal, in this paper, is to report our experiences on designing and delivering a curriculum that teaches programming to middle school students using App Inventor through collaborative learning. Our curriculum is developed on the hypothesis that visual programming environment, in this case, App Inventor, present an alternative way of learning programming, which in the collaborative learning environment can enhance programming competencies and interests in underrepresented students. In this experience report, we will describe how we implemented this curriculum as a block course;present our lessons learned, and few findings from the evaluation.

The research field of Document Image Analysis (DIA) produces state-of-the-art methods that are intended to analyze digitized documents, a substantial portion of which lie in the realm of humanities. However, applying the methods, more often than not, requires some programming knowledge. This results in low accessibility and, consequently, many of the methods, if not most, are not used by scholars in the humanities. There is a distinct need to bridge this gap and make DIA methods more accessible to end users. In this context, we discuss the design of a visual programming language (VPL) paradigm for an integrated DIA application environment targeting end-users that are not capable of programming. We elucidate in detail the various design considerations that went into the VPL's development and provide a description of our prototype VPL environment, named, AMAP and, finally, discuss future work.

This work adds new functionality to an existing visual programming environment. It applies software maintenance techniques for use with the Java language in a Microsoft Windows operating system environment. The previously undocumented application is intended to support programming with executable diagrams. This application has the potential to expand programming access to non-programmers, provide better software documentation and improve software maintainability. It is currently capable of supporting meta-programming tasks such as parsing and compiler building. The 11,184 legacy lines of code(LOC) were corrected, extended and documented to support future maintenance using an additional 957 LOC and changes to 45 LOC.

Are visual programming languages better?: The role of imagery in program comprehension

This paper presents one experiment to explain why and under which circumstances visual programming languages would be easier to understand than textual programming languages. Towards this goal we bring together research from psychology of programming and image processing. According to current theories of imagery processing imagery facilitates a quicker access to semantic information. Thus, visual programming languages should allow for quicker construction of a mental representation based on data flow relationships of a program than procedural languages. To test this hypothesis the mental models of C and spreadsheet programmers were assessed in different program comprehension situations. The results showed that spreadsheet programmers developed data flow based mental representations in all situations, while C programmers seemed to access first a control flow and then data flow based mental representations. These results could help to expand theories of mental models from psychology of programming to account for the effect of imagery. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

The purpose of this research is to compare textual programming languages and visual programming languages from the aspect of motivation. As a textual programming language, Processing programming language was used, and as visual programming languages, Scratch, a derivation of Scratch, Teaching materials offered by ***, and LEGO Mindstorms EV3 were used. Teaching materials using the textual programming language, and those using the visual programming languages were developed separately. A trial experiment of programming education with the textual programming language was conducted to a cohort of seven primary schoolchildren. Trial experiments with the visual programming languages were conducted twice. In each of them, a cohort of eight primary schoolchildren participated. The motivation of the children was assessed using the questionnaire based on the ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction) motivation model. The results with the visual programming languages suggested that the motivation scores of the children increased as the class progressed when visual programming languages were used. On the other hand, the results with Processing suggested that the variance of Satisfaction factor increased as the class progressed when textual programming languages were used, which further suggested that the Satisfaction scores of the children spread as the class progressed when textual programming languages were used.

As the needs of education of programming language increase, the importance of the learning environment has been emphasized. Based on the social trends, various web services for the education of programming which improves the computational thinking of a student. Among the web services, block-based programming languages are well known as an effective educational tool for a primary student though a freshman in the university. These tools are proven to be useful tools since the tools provide same programming environment to the students and the teachers anytime and anywhere. However, the environments may be insufficient for learning practical programming languages, such as C/C++ and Java, because they are not the block-based programming languages. This paper introduces a block-based learning environment for C programming language using web services. The environment fills the gap between building computational thinking and learning the syntax of the programming language. The programming environment provides the equivalent environment to teachers and the students during the programming hands-on.

The goal of this thesis is to create a programming language with characters and key- words substituted with images and animations (GIFs). We build a web IDE and a client- side interpreter for this language using modern web technologies including WebWorkers, TypeScript and React. The IDE features code-stepping with information about current location in the source code, environment variables and a call stack. Additionally, there is a support for storing programs on the server and loading them later. The purpose of the language is educational, e.g., to be used in creative games at programming camps for elementary and high schoolers. 1

Since environmental and energy issues and challenges continues to emerge as key global concerns, Green Building Certification Systems are becoming increasingly relevant in the construction industry. In this regard, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is considered one of the most widely recognized environmental assessment methods used globally in the construction industry ***, due to the high level of complexity of the LEED system, the tools usually used to verify the achievement of the credits lack of "design friendliness" and hardly communicate effectively with the con-ventional tools used by architects and engineers (e.g. CAD, BIM). This makes difficult to fully take into account, especially at the early design stage, the many interconnected aspects that contribute to the green certification, with consequent issues often arising in the design validation and/or construction phases, resulting in time delays and cost *** application of innovative problem-solving methods, such as computational thinking, together with coding techniques, represents an effective way to deal with this issue. This kind of methodology, in fact, allows the requirements of a specific LEED credit to be digitally parametrised and flexibly incorporated into a "designer friendly" working environment. In particular, visual programming languages (VPLs), due to their high simplicity of usage, allow archi-tects and engineers to develop algorithms and thus implement their technical knowledge in the field of environmental design with computer programming skills, useful to improve their tools and keep them constantly *** aim of this paper is to illustrate a methodology through which, by merging computational thinking strategies with VPL tools, is possible to keep under control, in the same working environ-ment, all the parameters required to verify in real time the achievement of LEED credits. Banking legacy systems intensively exchange messages in electronic format. Such systems are, for their nature, difficult to update and maintain. As a consequence, the introduction of new types of messages is a hard task. Adding new functionalities requires custom coding and software reuse is seen as a key to obtain a better time-to-masket factor, risk and cost reduction. In this paper we describe the architecture and part of the implementation of the ***. visual System, an Interbanking Network Information System that lets us generate gateways for the exchange of electronic messages among banking legacy systems and supports software reuse. In particular, the SLRE visual system contains a visual programming Environment that allows us to obtain a rapid development of the message handling functions. This environment implements a visual programming language UVG that allows a programmer to reuse COBOL routines.

Case Study: Design Strategies for Enabling visual Application Blocks of Bluetooth Library

Block-based tools can make it easier for beginners to learn programming by arranging blocks. Their block concept and extensible characteristics make block-based designs suitable for introductory programming. However, block-based tools are easy to use but difficult to extend to include the complicated applications of vendor libraries or domain-specific libraries. This paper proposes a solution to block design strategies that enable designers to redefine and design domain-specific libraries to generate visual application blocks. This research uses the Bluetooth library as a case study and constructs the BlocklyTooth integrated development environment (IDE) using the Google Blockly tool. A feasibility evaluation of this study produced the following findings: (1) for the strategies, the usability of the usability metric for user experience (UMUX) and the practicality of the customized theme received satisfactory responses;and (2) for the IDE, the usability of UMUX and the value implication of the customized theme received positive reviews. In addition, the experiment on resource impact revealed that the strategies are effective in improving resource utilization, in which the quantity of code is reduced by 70.2% and 89% in terms of the block count and lines of code, respectively, and the system memory is reduced by 51.8% in terms of the dynamic code size. The results indicate that the proposed solution can be a design reference guideline for block-based tools and can effectively abstract the complex Bluetooth library into blocks.
