A survey of 351 programmers, including people with dyslexia, has found that programmers with dyslexia are 33.4% more productive if they use a visual programming language. This paper presents important aspects of the profile of programmers with dyslexia, introduces the most commonly used textual programming languages (TPL) by a group of programmers, classifies the 31 most common visual programming languages (VPL) for the study group, and analyzes some technical and facilitation features to support the needs of programmers with dyslexia, in five of these languages that have been considered current and relevant for the purposes of this research. The visual programming language Alice has been selected as the language to be included in a comparison experiment with the Java programming language. Results of the experiment establish preferences and levels of effectiveness of Alice against the other language, according to the performance of a group of programmers who participated in the experiment.

End-user programming of time as an 'ordinary' dimension in grid-oriented visual programming languages

Specifying varying speeds and temporal relationships is necessary when programming graphical animations, but support for temporal programming has usually been done by adding new language features to a VPL, and these features must be mastered over and above the other aspects of the VPL. However, some researchers have believed that time should be able to be treated like just another dimension. In this paper, we explore whether programming of temporal relationships can be sup ported using exactly the same devices as in spatial programming in grid-oriented VPLs. Toward this end, we provide a continuum of models aimed at this goal, with their advantages and disadvantages, and identify core issues that help illuminate the essence of the problem. We also describe an empirical study comparing one of these models against a widely used traditional approach. The results were that end users were significantly more successful using the one model tested than with the traditional approach. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Block editors such as the one used in Scratch are now found in many visual programming languages (VPLs). While considered user-friendly for non-programmers or program learners, they have at least three important display limitations: readability, program structure, and re-use. To address these issues we have developed block shelves, a formatting and organizing tool in support of user-defined VPL structures. Usability experiment results indicate that block shelves can significantly enhance block code navigation and searches, as well as project structure clarification. In the interest of improving project collaboration and code re-use, users can utilize the extensible markup language file format to export/import shelves, and thereby share block codes between projects. Features designed for shelves and the experiment findings are value for course design in project-based learning and future block editor interface improvements.

A Survey on visual programming languages in Internet of Things

visual programming has transformed the art of programming in recent years. Several organizations are in race to develop novel ideas to run visual programming in multiple domains with Internet of Things. IoT, being the most emerging area of computing, needs substantial contribution from the visual programming paradigm for its technological propagation. This paper surveys visual programming languages being served for application development, especially in Internet of Things field. 13 such languages are visited from several popular research-electronic databases (e. g., IEEE Xplore, Science Direct, Springer Link, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Postscapes) and compared under four key attributes such as programming environment, license, project repository, and platform supports. Grouped into two segments, open source and proprietary platform, these visual languages pertain few crucial challenges that have been elaborated in this literature. The main goal of this paper is to present existing VPLs per their parametric proforma to enable na " ive developers and researchers in the field of IoT to choose appropriate variant of VPL for particular type of application. It is also worth validating the usability and adaptability of VPLs that is essential for selection of beneficiary in terms of IoT.

This full research to practice paper investigates the setting of pair-programming focusing on its effects on students' learning to program when using a visual versus text-based programming language. In particular, we are interested whether there are any differences in learning outcomes and social/motivational factors to keep in mind when learners' make their initial steps in programming in a visual versus text-based language while employing a pair-programming approach. First a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted, encompassing searches in the ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore/Electronic Library, LNCS (Springer), and Google Scholar. The results of the SLR informed the second step, namely the design of a qualitative study consisting of the evaluation of students' achievements, a questionnaire, and focus interviews with students at secondary level (K10). Students worked in pair-programming (PP) and solo-programming (SP) mode while using a visual language (MIT App Inventor) and a text-based language (Python), respectively. In a nutshell, we found that regarding achievement, students tended to earn more points in the PP setting. This tendency was more distinct in the text-based condition compared to visual programming. In both conditions, students responded that in the PP setting they had more fun solving the assignments and the PP setting had helped to solve problems faster. Aside of the scientific findings, the paper describes the didactic concepts used in order to inspire educators to engage in similar practice and research. With this contribution we aim to enrich educators' and researchers' repertoire of making introductory programming lessons more engaging and successful.

Much debate surrounds the choice of programming language for teaching computer science. Our institution's replacement of a visual programming language (RAPTOR) with a textual programming language (Python) provided a novel opportunity to explore the impacts of the programming language on students' learning and perception of programming. We conducted a randomized comparative study that involved 1083 students who took our introductory computing course in the 2019-2020 academic year. A unique aspect of our work stems from our course being a general education requirement;thus, our study includes students with a wide variety of backgrounds and majors. This report presents a comparison of student performance in each version of the course, including the impact of the programming language on underrepresented groups, and provides a summary of student feedback. Our results show that students in our introductory course performed similarly overall, but overwhelmingly perceived Python to be more valuable.

WebRB: A different way to write Web applications

Relational Blocks (RBlocks) is a visual dataflow language for writing multipage interactive applications that access, transform, and display relational data in a GUI. The authors present WebRB, an implementation of RBlocks for a Web application environment. It's deployed as a software service;developers run the WebRB visual editor in a standard Firefox Web browser and store their page designs and data on the WebRB server. WebRB is a different way to write Web applications because it uses visual page designs, lacks imperative code, and uses relational semantics.

Recommender Systems and Scratch: An Integrated Approach for Enhancing Computer programming Learning

Learning computer programming is a challenging process. Among the current approaches for overcoming this challenge, visual programming languages (VPLs), such as Scratch, have shown very promising results for beginners. Interestingly, some higher education institutions have started to use VPLs to introduce basic programming concepts, mainly in CS1 courses. However, an important issue regarding Scratchs usage in higher education environments is that students may feel unmotivated being confronted by programming exercises that do not fulfill their individual expectations. To try and overcome this barrier, we propose CARAMBA, a Scratch extension including an exercise recommender system. Based on features, such as taste and complexity, CARAMBA is able to personalize student learning with Scratch by suitably suggesting exercises for students. An in-depth evaluation was conducted about the effects of our proposal on both the learning of basic concepts of CS1 and the overall performance of students. We adopted an equivalent pretest-posttest design with 88 college students at an Ecuadorian university. Results confirm that recommending exercises in Scratch had a positive effect on students programming learning abilities in terms of pass rates. In totality, the pass rate achieved by our proposal was over 52%, which is 8% higher than the rate achieved during a previous experience using only Scratch (without recommendation) and 21% higher than the historical results of traditional teaching (without Scratch). Furthermore, we analyzed the degree of exploitation of CARAMBA by students to portray two facts: students actually used CARAMBA and there was a significant, positive correlation between the utilization of CARAMBA and the scores obtained by the students.

Improve Your Spreadsheet Productivity with VBA

Most Excel users, including chemical engineers, have not ventured behind the curtain to leverage the visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language that accompanies the spreadsheet program. Several reasons for this include: many chemical engineers have picked up the use of Excel on the fly; the availability and utility of VBA is not obvious, and its use is not required; and many chemical engineers have a disdain for programming languages, often instilled by an unpleasant experience in a computer programming course during college. A fully featured, somewhat independent, programming language like VBA has major benefits but also has some drawbacks. When recording macros for a series of tasks, VBA observes what the user is doing on the spreadsheet and interprets it as a VBA program. Often, the interpretation is not exactly what the user intended and must be fixed. There are also difficulties associated with the exchange of information (e.g., data) between the spreadsheet and VBA environments.

Development of a Modularized Undergraduate Data Science and Big Data Curricular Using No-Code Software Development Tools

Over the last decade, Data Science has emerged as one of the most important subjects that has had a major impact on industry. This is due to the continual development of scientific methods, algorithms, processes, and computational tools that help to extract knowledge from raw data efficiently and cost-effectively, compared with early-generation tools. Professional data scientists create code that processes, analyses and extracts actionable insights from high volumes of data. This process requires a deep understanding of mathematical principles, statistics, business knowledge, and computer science. But most importantly, the data science development chain requires knowledge of a high-level programming tool and its dependencies. This is a major problem in some aspects due to the steep learning curve. In this paper, we describe and present a modularized Data Science curriculum for undergraduate learners that relies on no-code software development tools as programming aids for non-computer science majors. No-code development tools have been added to the traditional teaching pedagogy to improve students' motivation and conceptual understanding of coding despite their limited programming skills. The study aims to assess the impacts of visual programming languages on the performance of non-computer science majors on programming problems. The study's sample consists of 50 fourth-year students from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Midlands State University. A post-survey questionnaire and assessment items were administered to the control and experimental groups. Results show that the students drawn from the experimental group benefited from the use of a visual programming language. These results offer evidence-based recommendations for incorporating high-performance no-code software development tools in the formal curriculum to aid teaching and learning data science programming for students of diverse academic backgrounds.
