The improved fisheye views algorithm is introduced as a method to deal with the visual problems in traditional 2D visual programming languages where programming elements are represented by 2D graphical objects. This paper discusses a software tool,called VANISH, which supports the rapid prototyping of interactive 2D and 3D information visualizations. VANISH supports rapid prototyping: through a special-purpose language tailored for visualizations;through a software architecture that insulates visualization-specific code from changes in both the domain being visualized and the presentation toolkit used;and through the reuse of visualization techniques between application domains. The generality of VANISH is established by showing how it is able to re-create a wide variety of ''standard'' visualization techniques. VANISH's support for prototyping is shown through an extended example, where we build a C++ class browser, exploring many visualization alternatives in the process.

This paper examines the main robot programming strategies and how they are used in the educational context. We analyze the advantages and drawbacks of the most common programming strategies in educational robotics such as textual, visual, and tangible based programming. Additionally, it explores the approach of programming by demonstrations PbD in an educational context. We identify the main PbD techniques, such as demonstrations through manipulation of the body of the learner robot or a model of the robot, demonstrations through the body motions of a human o robot teacher, demonstrations through the behavior of an object, among others. The paper also identifies the programming techniques that allow non programmers to create a robot program easily. Furthermore, we present research opportunities of intuitive robot programming in an educational context. Currently, the scope and impact of robot-based activities have primarily focused on the teaching and learning of technical subjects. In this paper, we discuss some characteristics that robot programming environments should have to facilitate the integration of educational robotics in the learning and teaching processes of non-technical school subjects.

Computational-thinking skills are an essential intellectual amplifier for all scientific and professional disciplines. Embedding these skills in the K-12 and University curricula is necessary for training the next generation of thinkers. A widely adopted approach to doing so is through simple and visual programming languages like Scratch and engaging assignments like video-game construction. In this work, we report on an empirical study we conducted with senior undergraduate education students aiming to understand how prior experience enables students to better develop their computation-thinking skills through a Scratch-based videogame assignment.

Recent innovations in visual programming and the use of direct manipulation for programming have demonstrated promise, but also raise questions about how far these approaches can be generalized. To clarify these issues, we present a categorization of systems for visual programming, programming-by-example, and similar systems. By examining each category, we elucidate the advantages, limitations, and ways to extend systems in each category. Our work makes it easier for researchers and designers to understand how visual programming languages (VPLs) and similar systems relate to each other, and how to extend them. We also indicate directions for future research.

Toward integrating systems engineering with software engineering through Object-Process programming

Modern systems comprise hardware and software components that together provide value through enabling the functionality that the system is intended to provide. Systems engineering (SE) and software engineering (SwE) are therefore interdependent, tightly coupled, and complementary activities that must be carefully aligned and coordinated throughout the system development process. Yet, these two disciplines have historically grown quite separated from each other, with too little interaction and mutual learning. In this work, we develop and evaluate Object-Process programming (OPP) as a proof-of-concept for a common framework that integrates SE and SwE based on ISO 19450—Object-Process Methodology. The ability of designers to use the same paradigm for engineering the software, the hardware, and the system as a whole, using the same concepts and principles and the same design environment, described and discussed in this work, is a major step towards the integration and streamlining of engineering new systems that feature significant hardware and software components. To evaluate OPP, we established a focus group and conducted an experiment in which participants were asked to develop systems using OPP. Overall, the results were positive in terms of usability and understandability. In particular, the language and the environment were far superior in comparison to textual languages. OPP will contribute to the continuous endeavor to bridge the gap between SE and SwE by providing a seamless, easy-to-learn environment. Non-technical stakeholders can also benefit from OPP by improving their communication with technical stakeholders. The ideas underlying OPP have already served to augment OPM with computational capabilities. © 2020, Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of Computer Applications and Management.

visual programming languages (VPLs), such as Scratch and StarLogo TNG, can make computer science education more accessible to everyone. Current researches in the study of using VPLs for educational purposes primarily focus on understanding motivational benefits and computational thinking gains. All these educational VPLs claim to scaffold students learning computational thinking concepts. Although the evaluations show that students may exhibit more enthusiasm, it is not clear what computational thinking concepts are actually learned by students. In this paper, we attempt to develop a visual programs recognition tool for student-created StarLogo TNG simulations which representing the computational thinking concepts implemented by the students. Through collecting student's created projects over time, this visual programs recognition tool can possibly indicate the patterns of computational thinking in science simulations created by StarLogo TNG.

The notion of end-user programming gains increasing attention in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) as a promising way to enable users develop personalized automations by deploying visual programming tools. In an IoT ecosystem, devices may be either invisible to users, embedded or hardly locatable, sometimes physically inaccessible. In this sense, testing becomes very challenging and difficult, since bringing physical devices to certain states may be either impractical (e.g. window and door sensors) or overall unsafe (e.g. fire or smoke sensors). It is crucial that trials are carried out in a protected, virtual environment, not the physical one. In this context we discuss a simulated runtime that addresses the challenges of testing end-user automations by entirely virtualizing devices. In this runtime, tests are not confined to a particular location, but may be carried out anywhere and anytime, totally disengaged from the physical ecosystem, with all user tools residing in any typical mobile machine, capable to fully operate standalone in test mode. Finally, when automations involve time and scheduling, for practical reasons, time itself can be simulated so that testing is done on demand, not following or waiting the pace of physical time.

Many web-applications can be characterized as "relational". In this paper we introduce and evaluate WebRB, a visual domain-specific language for building such applications. WebRB addresses the limitations of the conventional "imperative-embedding" approach typically used to build relational web-applications. We describe the WebRB language, present extended examples of its use, and discuss the WebRB visual editor, libraries, and runtime. We then evaluate WebRB by comparing it to alternative approaches, and demonstrate its effectiveness in building relational web-applications.

The population of elderly people and disabled has exponentially increased thanks to advances of medicine which allow people to live longer and healthier than the previous generations. In this context, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications which promotes independent living is more necessary than ever. Also, the Internet of Things (IoT) proliferates as the dominant technological paradigm for the open deployment of networked smart objects in the environment, including physical things, smart devices and entire applications. In our work, a primary objective was the delivery of an AAL framework on the top of smart objects which uses the full range of IoT technologies. Very early, it became evident that the demand of personalized applications in the context of AAL is very intense. This is mainly due to the highly individualized and fluid nature of the required applications. Along these lines, we focus in providing an end-user programming environment to empower carers, possibly the elderly and family themselves, with the necessary tools to easily and quickly craft, test, modify and deploy smart object applications they would like to have in their everyday life. In this paper, we support personalized automations using smart objects for outdoor daily activities, outside the elderly's protected home environment. We initially outline possible useful mobility scenarios. Then, we elaborate on the visual tools we are developing, followed by a brief case study using them.
