The increasing sophistication and availability of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technologies wield the potential to transform how we teach and learn computational concepts and coding. This project develops a platform for creative coding in virtual and augmented reality. The Embodied Coding Environment (ECE) is a flow-based visual coding system designed to increase physical engagement with programming and lower the barrier to entry for novice programmers. It is conceptualized as a merged digital/physical workspace where spatial representation of code, the visual outputs of the code, and user interactions and edit histories are co-located in a virtual 3D space.

Computational-thinking skills are an essential intellectual amplifier for all scientific and professional disciplines. Embedding these skills in the K-12 and University curricula is necessary for training the next generation of thinkers. A widely adopted approach to doing so is through simple and visual programming languages like Scratch and engaging assignments like video-game construction. In this work, we report on an empirical study we conducted with senior undergraduate education students aiming to understand how prior experience enables students to better develop their computation-thinking skills through a Scratch-based videogame assignment.

visual programming languages are a common way for enabling end users to create simple, customized programs in their smart homes. Although visual programming aims at lowering the syntactic and cognitive barriers existing languages lack a simple method for accessing services of smart spaces surrounding the home and therefore restrain the innovative capabilities of users. For example, accessing information about energy consumption or smart parking is often cumbersome and limited to users with advanced technical skills. Based on expert interviews, we extended the existing visual programming language Node-RED with functionalities that enable users to easily access data and services within and beyond their smart homes. Using this prototype, we performed a first evaluation of our solution with some inhabitants of smart homes.

Recent innovations in visual programming and the use of direct manipulation for programming have demonstrated promise, but also raise questions about how far these approaches can be generalized. To clarify these issues, we present a categorization of systems for visual programming, programming-by-example, and similar systems. By examining each category, we elucidate the advantages, limitations, and ways to extend systems in each category. Our work makes it easier for researchers and designers to understand how visual programming languages (VPLs) and similar systems relate to each other, and how to extend them. We also indicate directions for future research.

visual programming languages (VPLs), such as Scratch and StarLogo TNG, can make computer science education more accessible to everyone. Current researches in the study of using VPLs for educational purposes primarily focus on understanding motivational benefits and computational thinking gains. All these educational VPLs claim to scaffold students learning computational thinking concepts. Although the evaluations show that students may exhibit more enthusiasm, it is not clear what computational thinking concepts are actually learned by students. In this paper, we attempt to develop a visual programs recognition tool for student-created StarLogo TNG simulations which representing the computational thinking concepts implemented by the students. Through collecting student's created projects over time, this visual programs recognition tool can possibly indicate the patterns of computational thinking in science simulations created by StarLogo TNG.

visual programming languages use graphics to visualize and aid in the understanding of programs. We describe the graphical techniques used in the MAP environment to visualize the workspace, data, programs and program executions. Meta information is one approach to supplementing the basic functionality provided in the visual programming environment. We introduce meta-commands, commands to control visual characteristics of program objects, and describe the MAP meta-commands for color, folding, render and transparency. We show how these meta-commands can be used to affect graphical representation of programs and their executions and as a way to optimize the recording of program executions, and present examples of how a programmer can use these techniques to build, execute and analyze programs.

ArcGIS and AutoCAD Map 3D are both geographic information system (GIS) software. Both are used worldwide in many countries and companies. The dataflow design in visual editors is suitable for daily work. visual languages are valuable for wide user community. Dataflow design automatizes typical GIS tasks and makes the processes universal. It is possible to construct simple or complex workflows with a visual editor in both software. The concept of visual programming is highly acceptable for GIS users because they think spatially and graphically. The article presented practical example for automatic finding of suitable area for construction of new hotel. Two data flow diagrams for the same task demonstrate the differences between graphical notations in ArcGIS and AutoCAD Map.

This paper examines the main robot programming strategies and how they are used in the educational context. We analyze the advantages and drawbacks of the most common programming strategies in educational robotics such as textual, visual, and tangible based programming. Additionally, it explores the approach of programming by demonstrations PbD in an educational context. We identify the main PbD techniques, such as demonstrations through manipulation of the body of the learner robot or a model of the robot, demonstrations through the body motions of a human o robot teacher, demonstrations through the behavior of an object, among others. The paper also identifies the programming techniques that allow non programmers to create a robot program easily. Furthermore, we present research opportunities of intuitive robot programming in an educational context. Currently, the scope and impact of robot-based activities have primarily focused on the teaching and learning of technical subjects. In this paper, we discuss some characteristics that robot programming environments should have to facilitate the integration of educational robotics in the learning and teaching processes of non-technical school subjects.

Core subjects by field of knowledge for official University studies have been established in Annex II of the RD 1393/2007. Computer Science appears only in Engineering and Architecture Degrees. It is therefore necessary that the training received by high school students in the Computer field is not limited only to the intrinsic knowledge of current digital technologies and their immediate practical uses. It is crucial that the training also focuses on the development of skills that enable students to adapt to new technologies that might emerge in the future, especially, in the field of smart education and next generation smart classrooms. Whereas computational thinking may be the most appropriate for developing such skills, in this work, a particular proposal for measuring the development of computational thinking abilities in students is described, together with the results obtained in an experiment carried out during the practicum of the Master's Degree in Secondary School Teaching from the Universidad de La Laguna.

This paper discusses a software tool,called VANISH, which supports the rapid prototyping of interactive 2D and 3D information visualizations. VANISH supports rapid prototyping: through a special-purpose language tailored for visualizations;through a software architecture that insulates visualization-specific code from changes in both the domain being visualized and the presentation toolkit used;and through the reuse of visualization techniques between application domains. The generality of VANISH is established by showing how it is able to re-create a wide variety of ''standard'' visualization techniques. VANISH's support for prototyping is shown through an extended example, where we build a C++ class browser, exploring many visualization alternatives in the process.
