Uplink Scheduling of visual sensors: When View Popularity Matters

Decentralized camera sensors capture a 3D scene of interest from multiple perspectives. The captured video signals need to be transmitted to a central station over a shared wireless channel. A collocated server streams the gathered data to a collection of clients interested in experiencing the scene interactively. We design a constrained optimization framework for sharing the transmission bandwidth of the wireless channel across the sensors such that the average video quality over the client population is maximized. We consider scheduling the uplink resources of the wireless channel at the view or packet level. In the first case, the central station partitions the channel capacity across a select subset of views that are transmitted entirely. In the second case, the station coordinates the packet transmissions of every sensor. We formulate exact and approximate algorithms to solve the optimization of interest. We examine their transmission efficiency via simulation experiments that demonstrate considerable gains over the state-of-the-art and study the impact of view popularity.

This demo showcases some of the results obtained by the GreenEyes project, whose main objective is to enable visual analysis on resource-constrained multimedia sensor networks. The demo features a multi-hop visual sensor network operated by BeagleBones Linux computers with IEEE 802.15.4 communication capabilities, and capable of recognizing and tracking objects according to two different visual paradigms. In the traditional compress-then-analyze (CTA) paradigm, JPEG compressed images are transmitted through the network from a camera node to a central controller, where the analysis takes place. In the alternative analyze-then-compress (ATC) paradigm, the camera node extracts and compresses local binary visual features from the acquired images (either locally or in a distributed fashion) and transmits them to the central controller, where they are used to perform object recognition/tracking. We show that, in a bandwidth constrained scenario, the latter paradigm allows to reach better results in terms of application frame rates, still ensuring excellent analysis performance.

This paper presents an efficient digital image fusion strategy that is created for visual sensor networks(VSN's) to work in resource restricted, hazardous environments like battlefields. We aimed to use multiple partially unfocused colored images to develop a single multi-focus image using Discrete Cosine Transformation(DCT) depending on maximum value Alternating Current(AC) coefficients. This technique is beneficial in computation restricted environments of reduced computational powered devices to achieve image quality of higher degree. Our experiments shown that, the evaluated technique had produced better quality images as compared to other available methods of fusion in DCT domain.

The GreenEyes project aims at developing a comprehensive set of new methodologies, practical algorithms and protocols, to empower wireless sensor networks with vision capabilities. The key tenet of this research is that most visual analysis tasks can be carried out based on a succinct representation of the image, which entails both global and local features, while it disregards the underlying pixel-level representation. Specifically, GreenEyes will pursue the following goals: i) energy-constrained extraction of visual features;ii) rate-efficiency modelling and coding of visual feature;iii) networking streams of visual features. This will have a significant impact on several scenarios including, e.g., smart cities and environmental monitoring.

Nearly half of the senior citizens report difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep. Frequent visits to the bathroom in the middle of the night is considered as one of the major reasons for sleep disorder. This leads to serious diseases such as depression and diabetes. In this paper, we propose to use a network of cheap low-resolution visual sensors (30 x 30 pixels) for long-term activity analysis of a senior citizen in a service flat. The main focus of our research is on elderly behaviour analysis to detect health deterioration. Specifically, this paper treats the analysis of sleep patterns. Firstly, motion patterns are detected. Then, a rule-based approach on the motion patterns is proposed to determine the wake up time and sleep time. The nightly bathroom visit is identified using a classification-based model. In our evaluation, we performed experiments on 10 months of real-life data. The ground truth is collected from the diaries in which the senior citizen wrote down his sleep time and wake up time. The results show accurate extraction of the sleep durations with an overall Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 22.91 min and Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.69. Finally, the nightly bathroom visits analysis indicate sleep disorder in several nights.

The Internet of Things is expected to play a fundamental role in a wide range of application fields. Intelligent Transportation Systems are among the most promising application domains, being inherently large-scale and composed by heterogeneous systems. In this paper we present the ICSI M2M Middleware, a software capable of supporting standard Machine-to-Machine communication, while tackling with the dynamic nature of resource-constrained devices and networks. The RESTFUL interface of the ICSI M2M Middleware provides a way to dynamically reconfigure distributed sensing applications, while the support for in-network aggregation guarantees an efficient utilization of network resources. Preliminary experimental results gathered through a laboratory testbed indicate that the ICSI M2M Middleware is a suitable solution for the ITS use-case of a visual sensor network of resource-constrained devices.

Nowadays, multi-object detection is one of the most important research issues in visual sensor networks. According to literature, many methods have been proposed for object detection. However, in most of the traditional works, preprocessing methods in camera nodes cause network to be faced with large amount of data when there are several objects in camera node field-of-views. In other words, conventional works can be suitable for single object detection. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient preprocessing method in camera nodes for multi-object detection which is called Bounding box Boosting-based Face Detection (BBOD). In this method, first off, a background subtraction technique is used. Then the rows and columns of the objects bounding box are determined by a number of consecutive differences. After that, the bounding box of the all objects delivers to the Boosting-based face detection algorithm for extracting the faces of objects, and their boundaries. Finally, the detected faces are sent to the base station. The simulation results demonstrate that BBOD method injects less traffic to the network and saves camera nodes energy. Consequently, BBOD method increases the network lifetime in comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms.

QoS assurance and information security are important for multimedia data transmission in wireless multimedia sensor networks. First, the status of multimedia sensor networks was introduced. Then research status of QoS assurance and information security of wireless multimedia sensor networks was surveyed, and the related open issues were also analyzed. Finally, the technology routes to solve the open issues were also studied and discussed. We argue that trusted QoS architecture considering various applications with different QoS requirements is important for wireless multimedia sensor networks. And network conditions and protocol layers must be well designed in QoS-aware secure multimedia routing mechanism to satisfy QoS requirements of multiple traffic classes. Technologies of information hiding, multimedia data resolution, and multi-routing can be used for privacy protection in wireless multimedia sensor networks.

Engineering Energy Efficient visual sensor Network Applications Using Skeletons

visual sensor networks (VSNs) perform complex scene analysis algorithms that require significant computations and communications. Under this respect, the use of skeletons contributes to reduce the complexity of VSN programming and may ensure an easier and better optimization of the code. In this context, we propose INS, a stencil based skeleton targeted for wireless/visual sensor networks (W/VSNs) and give a preliminary analysis of its benefits using tracking as a case study. INS abstracts a distributed approximation schema in which the estimation of a given metric is organized in a sequence of steps. Each step includes collecting estimates from some neighbor nodes and local computation of a new approximation. In particular, INS takes inspiration from some stencil based skeletons proposed for parallel computation and merges it with the classical event driven model typical of sensor programming. As a result, the execution of each step is triggered by the detection of a relevant event in the environment. Tracking consists in periodically predicting position and velocity of one or more mobile targets. We discuss how INS can be instantiated to a distributed version of Kalman filtering. As energy efficiency is central in W/VSNs, we derive analytic models for energy dissipation of the INS skeleton depending on different concepts of neighborhood for the data exchanged at each step. Then, these models are used to guide the deployment of our tracking application on a real scenario.

This paper investigates quality-driven cross-layer optimization for resource allocation in direct sequence code division multiple access wireless visual sensor networks. We consider a single-hop network topology, where each sensor transmits directly to a centralized control unit (CCU) that manages the available network resources. Our aim is to enable the CCU to jointly allocate the transmission power and source-channel coding rates for each node, under four different quality-driven criteria that take into consideration the varying motion characteristics of each recorded video. For this purpose, we studied two approaches with a different tradeoff of quality and complexity. The first one allocates the resources individually for each sensor, whereas the second clusters them according to the recorded level of motion. In order to address the dynamic nature of the recorded scenery and re-allocate the resources whenever it is dictated by the changes in the amount of motion in the scenery, we propose a mechanism based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm, combined with two restarting schemes that either exploit the previously determined resource allocation or conduct a rough estimation of it. Experimental simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approaches.
