In 2005, Franco Moretti introduced Distant Reading to analyse entire literary text collections. This was a rather revolutionary idea compared to the traditional Close Reading, which focuses on the thorough interpretation of an individual work. Both reading techniques are the prior means of visual text analysis. We present an overview of the research conducted since 2005 on supporting text analysis tasks with close and distant reading visualizations in the digital humanities. Therefore, we classify the observed papers according to a taxonomy of text analysis tasks, categorize applied close and distant reading techniques to support the investigation of these tasks and illustrate approaches that combine both reading techniques in order to provide a multi-faceted view of the textual data. In addition, we take a look at the used text sources and at the typical data transformation steps required for the proposed visualizations. Finally, we summarize collaboration experiences when developing visualizations for close and distant reading, and we give an outlook on future challenges in that research area.

In this article, we first present the benefit of combing text analysis (topic models in particular) with interactive visualization. We then highlight examples from prior work on topic and time-oriented visual text analysis. Lastly, we present four challenges that warrant additional future research in the field of visual text analysis.

text annotation data in terms of a series of tagged text segments can pose scalability challenges within the dimensions of quantity (long texts bearing many annotations), configuration (overlapping annotations or annotations with multiple tags), or source (annotations by multiple annotators). Accordingly, exploration tasks such as navigating within a long annotated text, recognizing patterns in the annotation data or assessing differences between annotators can be demanding. Our approach of an annotation browser deals with all of these data and task challenges simultaneously by providing a continuous range of views on large amounts of complex annotation data from multiple sources. We achieve this by using a combined geometric/semantic zooming mechanism that operates on an abstract representation of the sequence of a text's tokens and the annotations thereupon, which is interlinked with a view on the text itself. The approach was developed in the context of a joint project with researchers from fields concerned with textual sources. We derive our approach's requirements from a series of tasks that are typical in natural language processing and digital humanities, show how it supports these tasks, and discuss it in the light of the feedback we got from our domain experts.

Detecting references and similarities in music lyrics can be a difficult task. Crowdsourced knowledge platforms such as Genius. can help in this process through user-annotated information about the artist and the song but fail to include visualizations to help users find similarities and structures on a higher and more abstract level. We propose a prototype to compute similarities between rap artists based on word embedding of their lyrics crawled from Genius. Furthermore, the artists and their lyrics can be analyzed using an explorative visualization system applying multiple visualization methods to support domain-specific tasks.

It presents a way to build support for knowledge, analytical reasoning and explore analysis methods in visual text analysis. The analysis of a novel's plot and characters are challenging and time-consuming tasks in literary criticism. Typically, humanities scholars want to describe and compare characters' personality traits, their roles, their relationships, and the evolution of these aspects over the course of a novel. Nowadays, due to the digitization of literature, humanities scholars can be supported in these endeavors with computational methods. In this paper, we present an approach that offers several means to analyze the plot and characters of a novel visually. Analysts can easily switch between an adjacency matrix and a node-link representation, which provide an overview of the characters and the relationships between them. Both views enable analysts to select different text ranges of the novel for studying the commonalities and differences of the character constellations within these ranges. We offer interactive visual representations to help investigate the relationships between the characters in more detail. Additionally, we link the visual representations with the novels' texts to support the inspection and verification of previously generated ideas and hypotheses. To demonstrate the benefits and limitations of our approach, we present two usage scenarios. The first one is based on a fictitious analysis and the second one discusses applications that were carried out during joint workshops with humanities scholars. Finally, we present and discuss the insights gained by an expert study and the design decisions of our approach.

Word Clouds have gained an impressive momentum for summarizing text documents in the last years. They visually communicate in a clear and descriptive way the most frequent words of a text. However, there are only very few word cloud visualizations that support a contrastive analysis of multiple documents. The available approaches provide comparable overviews of the documents, but have shortcomings regarding the layout, readability, and use of white space. To tackle these challenges, we propose MultiCloud, an approach to visualize multiple documents within a single word cloud in a comprehensible and visually appealing way. MultiCloud comprises several parameters and visual representations that enable users to alter the word cloud visualization in different aspects. Users can set parameters to optimize the usage of available space to get a visual representation that provides an easy visual association of words with the different documents. We evaluated MultiCloud with visualization researchers and a group of domain experts comprising five humanities scholars.

The wide-spread of social media provides unprecedented sources of written language that can be used to model and infer online demographics. In this paper, we introduce a novel visual text analytics system, DemographicVis, to aid interactive analysis of such demographic information based on user-generated content. Our approach connects categorical data (demographic information) with textual data, allowing users to understand the characteristics of different demographic groups in a transparent and exploratory manner. The modeling and visualization are based on ground truth demographic information collected via a survey conducted on ***. Detailed user information is taken into our modeling process that connects the demographic groups with features that best describe the distinguishing characteristics of each group. Features including topical and linguistic are generated from the user-generated contents. Such features are then analyzed and ranked based on their ability to predict the users' demographic information. To enable interactive demographic analysis, we introduce a web-based visual interface that presents the relationship of the demographic groups, their topic interests, as well as the predictive power of various features. We present multiple case studies to showcase the utility of our visual analytics approach in exploring and understanding the interests of different demographic groups. We also report results from a comparative evaluation, showing that the DemographicVis is quantitatively superior or competitive and subjectively preferred when compared to a commercial text analysis tool.

MAIA (movie analysis in action) is a simple method in Media Literacy Education. It consists of a few simple operative steps, thanks to which you can design interesting learning situations to approach audiovisual text analysis with students. The method has been tested several times in last three years, in groups of young (16-18 years old) and adult students (23 years old and over). The main purpose of this teaching model is both to make the moment of “graphic transcription” of the audiovisual text more interesting, and to easily introduce the whole analysis process.

The Common N-Gram (CNG) classifier is a text classification algorithm based on the comparison of frequencies of character n-grams (strings of characters of length n) that are the most common in the considered documents and classes of documents. We present a text analytic visualization system that employs the CNG approach for text classification and uses the differences in frequency values of common n-grams in order to visually compare documents at the sub-word level. The visualization method provides both an insight into n-gram characteristics of documents or classes of documents and a visual interpretation of the workings of the CNG classifier.
