visual algorithm simulation (VAS) is an activity in which students practice their understanding of algorithms: They simulate the steps of an algorithm by manipulating a bespoke visualization within a supporting software system. Multiple instances of a VAS exercise may be automatically generated for different learners or for repetitive practice by a single learner. In this work-in-progress report, we discuss how misconceptions might be automatically detected in students' solutions to VAS exercises and how misconception-aware feedback might be provided in VAS. We identify two strategies for producing multiple instances of VAS exercises and evaluate them against several criteria. The trade-offs so identified are also pertinent for similar process-simulation practice beyond VAS and computing education.

visual algorithm simulation (VAS) exercises are commonly used in Computer Science education to help learners understand the logic behind the abstractions used in programming. These exercises also present problems common in the daily work of Computer Science graduates. Aalto University uses the JSAV library to create VAS exercises and evaluate the solutions submitted by students. The evaluation process counts the amount of correct steps given by the user during the exercise. However, because more detailed data is not collected, teachers currently can not recreate and analyse the submitted solutions more in depth. This thesis presents the design, development and evaluation of an application prototype, which can be easily integrated in existing VAS exercises created with the JSAV library. The prototype is called Player Application, and it is designed as a service that can be easily integrated into other systems while still remaining independent. The Player Application consists of two main independent components: the Exercise Recorder and the Exercise Player. A third important contribution is the new JSON-based algorithm Animation Language, which is designed to describe, structure and store the data collected from the VAS exercises. The prototype was successfully tested in an online environment by importing the Exercise Recorder into existing exercises and replaying the submitted solutions in the Exercise Player. The tests showed that its design and architecture were valid. Next, the aim is to create a mature application, which can be used at Aalto University and other institutions, in addition the prototype still needs further development to support more VAS exercise types.

visual algorithm simulation (VAS) is a method used in teaching data structures and algorithms. In a VAS exercise a learner simulates the steps of an algorithm by interacting with data structure visualisations and receives feedback on the correctness of steps taken. A data format for storing VAS simulation traces would allow for later inspection of the process by instructors and researchers. In this study we describe the development of a prototype language for this purpose. The initial version was tested in a research project where the language was used for recording traces, which were later analyzed. The results were positive but also instructed some revisions in the data format and the requirements. We describe an iterative development process for extending and improving the language and the tooling. This is a work in progress: we will proceed with the data format specification, as well as further develop the technologies needed to use the data format in conjunction with VAS exercises.

We report a study on collaborative learning with algorithm visualizations (AV). We have previously confirmed the hypothesis that students' higher engagement has a positive effect on learning outcomes when they learn collaboratively. Thus, in this paper the analysis is targeted on students' collaborative learning process in order to find phenomena that explain the learning improvements. In the video and audio analysis of the learning sessions, we have identified that the amount of collaboration and discussion increase when the level of engagement increases. Furthermore, the groups that used visualizations on higher level of engagement, discussed the learned topic on different levels of abstraction whereas groups that used visualizations on lower levels of engagement tended to concentrate more on only one aspect of the topic. Therefore, one of our conclusions is that the level of engagement indicates, not only the learning performance, but also the amount of on-topic discussions in collaboration. Furthermore, based on previous literature, we claim that the amount and quality of discussions explain the learning performance differences when students use visualizations in collaboration on different levels of engagement.

This paper presents EASy-DSBuilder, an e-assessment tool for assessing fundamental concepts of binary tree data structure operations (i.e. search, insert, and delete operations) taught in Computer Science (CS) lectures. Students can manipulate data structures by adding nodes and freely move them, as well as connect and disconnect nodes within a drag-and-drop interface. At the same time, teachers can easily create new exercises based on their own data structures by uploading their Java implementation. We discuss EASy-DSBuilder's user interface and its general feedback mechanism. We also conducted a user study evaluating EASy-DSBuilder's user interface, visualisation techniques, and overall performance. Both qualitative and quantitative results show that usability is well-liked and learning success is promising.
