Radiation therapy for optic nerve sheath meningiomas: Local control and treatment related visual changes

Objective: Our primary objective is to evaluate the local control of optic nerve sheath meningiomas (ONSMs) treated with ionizing radiation and related visual changes after treatment. Our secondary objective is to describe the clinical characteristics and perform an analysis of the treatment impact on the functional status of this group of patients. Methods: We present our series of 19 patients treated with ionizing radiation therapy at our radio-neurosurgery unit between 2016 and 2022. The setting, ophthalmological follow-up, morbidity, and survival are analyzed and discussed. Results: Patients were followed up, and the impact of treatment on local disease control, visual alterations of the affected eye, and functional status of the patient were analyzed. The progression-free survival (PFS) median was 60 months (95% CI 50.3-69.6 months). The estimated PFS rates at 48 and 66 months were 100% and 66%, respectively. At diagnosis, nine (47.3%) eyes were in amaurosis and ten (52.6%) with vision. Of the ten patients without amaurosis at the time of diagnosis, three (30%) maintained unchanged visual acuity, and seven (70%) had decreased visual acuity;three of them developed amaurosis during the first year after treatment (p = 0.018). Conclusions: Using ionizing radiation therapy is a successful treatment for the local control of ONSMs. This therapeutic modality can compromise the visual acuity of the affected eye and improve dyschromatopsia and campimetry defects. The life prognosis is good for these patients, with a zero mortality rate, but their vision prognosis is poor.

Differentiating oneself from competition and breaking through the clutter of the modern, saturated marketplace has become increasingly complicated. In addition, consumers have become more powerful and critical towards formal marketing messages. These realities have led to a necessity for companies to turn more of their focus and resources toward the exploitation of visual communication. visual brand identity (VBI) serves as a significant tool that helps brands to represent themselves and convey their essence. However, to date, proper conceptualisation of VBI has been limited and as a result, the purpose of this study is to provide a holistic and thorough examination of VBI. In addition, since the modern marketplace is characterised by constant change, brands are under pressure to renew their visual appearance on a regular basis in order to maintain relevancy. Therefore, a further aim of this study is to determine the procedures and strategies marketing experts employ in order to uphold an appropriate balance between the implementation of visual changes and the maintenance of a familiar VBI. The theoretical framework for the studied issues was predominantly formed by the concepts of brand identity, visual identity and visual brand identity. The most conventional visual brand elements were also closely examined, as were the notions of consistency, brand identification and brand familiarity. Potential reasons for, consequences of, and factors to be considered in the implementation of visual changes were also part of the theoretical framework. Finally, semi- structured theme interviews with eleven marketing experts were conducted. With the aspiration of contributing to the existing knowledge surrounding the topic, answers to the research questions were presented through the comparison and contrast of theory and the empirical findings. The findings revealed that VBI is a multidimensional construct that can serve as a valuable resource if understood and managed properly.

Neuroretinitis is a condition typically characterized by unilateral optic neuropathy and is most commonly a sequelae of cat scratch disease (CSD) due to infection with Bartonella henselae. Ophthalmologic examination will reveal a swollen optic nerve and may eventually reveal a canonical macular star;optical coherence tomography (OCT) will reveal flattening of the fovea, a thickened neurosensory retina, and subretinal fluid accumulation. Although CSD rarely presents with isolated neuorretinitis, it should be considered in patients presenting with unilateral visual changes. The differential diagnosis for neuroretinitis includes optic neuritis, inflammatory optic neuropathies (sarcoid, para-infectious, autoimmune), compressive, toxic, and more. We describe a pediatric patient presenting with visual changes that were initially concerning for optic neuritis and the diagnostic workup that ultimately led to a diagnosis of CSD neuroretinitis.

Multisource surveillance video data coding with hierarchical knowledge library

The rapidly increasing surveillance video data has challenged the existing video coding standards. Even though knowledge based video coding scheme has been proposed to remove redundancy of moving objects across multiple videos and achieved great coding efficiency improvement, it still has difficulties to cope with complicated visual changes of objects resulting from various factors. In this paper, a novel hierarchical knowledge extraction method is proposed. Common knowledge on three coarse-to-fine levels, namely category level, object level and video level, are extracted from history data to model the initial appearance, stable changes and temporal changes respectively for better object representation and redundancy removal. In addition, we apply the extracted hierarchical knowledge to surveillance video coding tasks and establish a hybrid prediction based coding framework. On the one hand, hierarchical knowledge is projected to the image plane to generate reference for I frames to achieve better prediction performance. On the other hand, we develop a transform based prediction for P/B frames to reduce the computational complexity while improve the coding efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

There is considerable value in developing tools capable of accurately and reliably determining when bruises were inflicted in humans. Previous work has focused on the visual changes observed in a bruise as the injury develops and heals. However, due to variables such as how and where on the body the bruise was inflicted, differing tissue compositions at the injured skin site between individuals and inter- and intra-observer variation;a technique sufficiently robust for use in a clinical or medicolegal setting has not yet been identified. In this study we present a series of photographs taken under controlled conditions illustrating standardised bruises induced on participants using a weight dropping mechanism. We show that variation in the appearance of bruises over time across individuals is large and, although photography may be a suitable technique for the recording of injuries, it is not sufficiently reliable for determining the age of a bruise. visual self-assessment with the ACTO test during follow-up of AMD patients after intravitreal injections

Introduction. Monthly controls are necessary after injections of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to enable timely recognition of a renewed decrease in vision. However, these monthly control intervals are not realistic for many older patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and outpatient clinics often reach their logistical limits because of inadequate funding for the additional medical work. Against this background, we conceived the ACTO self-test as a novel screening method for patients to discover unnoticed visual changes outside the routinely scheduled ophthalmic examination. Material and methods. The paper version of the ACTO self-test consists of a reading chart gradated in decimal steps as well as six questions regarding the quality of the Amsler grid. The patient uses a self-screening test to examine each eye separately and then transfers the results to a table. Along with the self-examination, the Action Eyesight Service Center is available to the patient by phone to motivate the patient and schedule a new appointment if improved test results occur. If decreased values or suspected decreased visual function occur, these are verified immediately by the referring physician. Results. There is a good correlation between the steps of the ACTO self-test and standard visual acuity at 4 m (r(2)=0.9). Altogether, 1,444 patients were followed by phone and 745 participated in repeated regular audits, for a total of 3,003 phone contacts. The treating physician was informed about decreased visual acuity or increased Amsler distortion in the ACTO test in 137 cases, and immediate verification was done. We had 699 dropouts;the reasons were decreased visual acuity below the limits of the ACTO test in 39%, additional monthly examinations by the local ophthalmologist in 29%, and a desire for no more telephone follow-up (despite initial written consent) in 32%. This paper illustrates multiple levels of boundary for video segmentation from coarse to fine granularity, which include highlights, attentive visual change, and game status change. The boundaries between video shots are commonly known as scene change and the action of segmentation a video sequence into multiple shots is called scene change detection. However, different applications are suitable for different fine granularities of the shot boundary. In this paper, we take the content semantic into consideration to segment the video. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed method for sports programs.

Posterior globe flattening has been well-documented in astronauts both during and after long-duration space flight (LDSF) and has been observed as early as 10 days into a mission on the International Space Station. Globe flattening (GF) is thought to be caused by the disc centred anterior forces created by elevated volume and/or pressure within the optic nerve sheath (ONS). This might be the result of increased intracranial pressure, increased intraorbital ONS pressure from compartmentalisation or a combination of these mechanisms. We report posterior GF in three astronauts that has persisted for 7 years or more following their return from LDSFs suggesting that permanent scleral remodelling may have occurred.

Based on the coordinate transformation theory,the novel shrinking cloak and the rotation cloak for visual change of the shielded objects are proposed which are used to masquerade the position,shape,material and size information of the shielded *** permeability and permittivity of the cloaks are *** numerical simulation results illustrate that the shielded object covered by the cloaks and the equivalent illusion object have the same electromagnetic *** order to meet the engineering application,we used a multi-layered homogeneous anisotropic material instead of the inhomogeneous anisotropic material in the transformation region and the layer's thickness optimization is obtained through the genetic algorithm.

A key problem in visual tracking is to represent the appearance of an object in a way that is robust to visual changes. To attain this robustness, increasingly complex models are used to capture appearance variations. However, such models can be difficult to maintain accurately and efficiently. In this paper, we propose a visual tracker in which objects are represented by compact and discriminative binary codes. This representation can be processed very efficiently, and is capable of effectively fusing information from multiple cues. An incremental discriminative learner is then used to construct an appearance model that optimally separates the object from its surrounds. Furthermore, we design a hypergraph propagation method to capture the contextual information on samples, which further improves the tracking accuracy. Experimental results on challenging videos demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed tracker.
