Nowadays there is a clear trend for improving productivity and efficiency in the Industrial sector by integrating new advanced ICT technologies that are re-shaping the industrial production paradigms, as in the Industry 4.0 initiative. This new trend does not only affect production lines and machines but also operators. Markets demanding efficiency and flexibility would not be possible excluding the human-factor. Putting the operators in the centre of this new paradigm is mandatory for its success. The operators need to be empowered by giving them new tools and solutions for improving their decision-making processes. In this paper we show how visual computing technologies can play a key role in this empowering process, being therefore essential in the realization of the Operator 4.0 vision.

A worldwide movement in advanced manufacturing countries is seeking to reinvigorate (and revolutionize) the industrial and manufacturing core competencies with the use of the latest advances in information and communications technology. visual computing plays an important role as the "glue factor" in complete solutions. This article positions visual computing in its intrinsic crucial role for Industrie 4.0 and provides a general, broad overview and points out specific directions and scenarios for future research.

In many cases, countries' successes can be attributed to technological advancements, and these advancements often in turn rely on informatics that encompass data, information, knowledge, information systems, and information and communication technologies. This special issue focuses on submissions describing innovative visual computing applications in areas related to the progress of developing countries. From a total of 18 submissions from Brazil, South Africa, and Mexico, the guest editors selected four representative articles that investigate image processing, computer vision, virtual reality, 3D user interaction, and games, all of which are related to different domains, such as industrial technology, HSE (health, safety and environment), knowledge acquisition, and public policy.

The (r)evolution in Industrie 4.0 is being accelerated by the wide adoption of networking and Internet technology into traditional industries such as manufacturing shop floors aiming at CPPS for future factories. Furthermore, advances in additive manufacturing, modeling systems, physics-based simulation, and the computational representation of materials has created a framework to enable new intelligent factories characterized by adaptability, resource efficiency, and ergonomics. This special issue serves to familiarize the computer graphics community with the Industrie 4.0 and Industrial Internet initiatives and mobilize more computer graphicists to initiate research and application development in this emerging and attractive area.

With the increasing share of elderly population worldwide, the necessity of assistive technologies to support clinicians in monitoring their health conditions is becoming more and more relevant. Recent medical literature has proposed the notion of frail elderly, which rapidly became a key element of clinical practices for the estimation of well-being in aging population. The evaluation of frailty is commonly based on self reported outcomes and occasional physicians evaluations, leading to possibly biased results. In this work we propose a data driven method to automatically evaluate two of the main aspects contributing to the frailty estimation, i.e. the motility of the subject and his cognitive status. The first one is evaluated using visual computing tools, while the latter relies on a virtual reality based system. We provide an extensive experimental assessment performed on two sets of data acquired in a sensorised protected discharge facility located in a local hospital. Our results are in good agreement with the assessment manually performed by physicians, nicely showing the potential capability of our approach to complement current protocols of evaluation.

The rapid proliferation of visual computing technologies, such as three-dimensional (3D) modeling, 3D simulation, and virtual reality (VR), is precipitating changes in the way that designers and engineers work. visual 3D information processing is replacing traditional two-dimensional (2D), numeric and language-based information processing. Many firms are adopting these 3D technologies (3DT) to support product development, electronic commerce and decision-making, yet very little research can be found in the Information Systems (IS) literature about how firms are strategically utilizing this technology. Our research investigated how 3D technologies mediated the knowledge explication process in product development. In this paper, we discuss an exploratory study on the innovative use of 3DT in two companies. This research contributes to the IS field by providing a theoretical framework on how visual computing technologies can better capture, represent, interpret and share organizational knowledge within a product development context. Fine-Grained visual computing Based on Deep Learning

With increasing amounts of information, the image information received by people also increases exponentially. To perform fine-grained categorization and recognition of images and visual calculations, this study combines the visual Geometry Group Network 16 model of convolutional neural networks and the vision attention mechanism to build amulti-level fine-grained image feature categorization model. Finally, the Tensor-Flow platform is utilized to simulate the fine-grained image classification model based on the visual attention mechanism. The results show that in terms of accuracy and required training time, the fine-grained image categorization effect of the multi-level feature categorization model constructed by this study is optimal, with an accuracy rate of 85.3% and a minimum training time of 108 s. In the similarity effect analysis, it is found that the chi-square distance between Log Gabor features and the degree of image distortion show a strong positive correlation;in addition, the validity of this measure is verified. Therefore, through the research in this study, it is found that the constructed fine-grained image categorization model has higher accuracy in image recognition categorization, shorter training time, and significantly better performance in similar feature effects, which provides an experimental reference for the visual computing of fine-grained images in the future.

Underwater visual computing: The Grand Challenge Just around the Corner

visual computing technologies have traditionally been developed for conventional setups where air is the surrounding medium for the user, the display, and/or the camera. However, given mankind's increasingly need to rely on the oceans to solve the problems of future generations (such as offshore oil and gas, renewable energies, and marine mineral resources), there is a growing need for mixed-reality applications for use in water. This article highlights the various research challenges when changing the medium from air to water, introduces the concept of underwater mixed environments, and presents recent developments in underwater visual computing applications.

In this letter, a method called visual computing was used to solve angular four-components' proportions and directional vegetation cover fraction for discrete canopies and continuous row-planted plants. It proved effective to predict the angular characteristics on pixel scale. The method could be an alternative way to classical solution of geometrical optical models. visual computing method would be effective especially when the canopies' spatial distribution and shapes were irregular and could not be described statistically.
