This paper proposes a self-learning content-based image indexing and retrieval system that employs a hierarchical content representation (consisting of objects and regions) and a hierarchical content matching method for effective and efficient image/object retrieval. The “learning” behavior is enabled by our proposed hierarchical content representation which allows easy storage of combinations of regions that have resulted in successful matches to objects of interest as determined by user search patterns and profiles. The learning step effectively performs an automatic off-line analysis of database images into meaningful objects. Once the learning phase is complete, the speed of shape based retrieval of the learned objects in the database increases significantly. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchical content representation, hierarchical matching, and the learning behavior on collections of car images.

This paper is related to visual information systems in general, and to information retrieval from image databases in particular. We propose an approach based on the fusion of retrieval results returned by multiple retrieval strategies to improve the effectiveness of image retrieval from image databases. Multiple retrieval strategies proposed and used in this paper are multiple content representations and multiple queries. We consider the case of textures and consider both the general retrieval case as well as the case of invariant image retrieval. Experimental results show, through benchmarking on two image databases, that retrieval effectiveness is improved in a very appreciable way with the fused model.

As the demand for virtual reality systems increases, a new approach is needed to meet the following requirements: a world consists of a large number of objects; a camera is allowed to move and a world should be displayed in near real-time depending on the position of the camera as well as the angle of its lens; and minimum effort should be needed when objects are moving. We satisfy these requirements with the following: an object-oriented rendering approach is developed; and an approach based on spatial indexing (specifically R/sup +/-tree) is developed to manage operations on objects (i.e., retrieval, insertion and deletion) effectively.

Geographic Information Systems are developed to handle enormous volumes of data and are equipped with numerous functionalities intended to capture, store, edit, organise, process and analyse or represent the geographically referenced information. On the other hand, industrial simulators for driver training are real-time applications that require a virtual environment, either geospecific, geogeneric or a combination of the two, over which the simulation programs will be run. In the final instance, this environment constitutes a geographic location with its specific characteristics of geometry, appearance, functionality, topography, etc. The set of elements that enables the virtual simulation environment to be created and in which the simulator user can move, is usually called the visual Database (VDB). The main idea behind the work being developed approaches a topic that is of major interest in the field of industrial training simulators, which is the problem of analysing, structuring and describing the virtual environments to be used in large driving simulators. This paper sets out a methodology that uses the capabilities and benefits of Geographic Information Systems for organising, optimising and managing the visual Database of the simulator and for generally enhancing the quality and performance of the simulator.

A novel approach pertaining to the fast and efficient retrieval and storage of video sequences utilizing MPEG-1/2 motion vectors is presented in this paper. A clip first must be segmented into consistent video segments based on the basic editing effects - cuts, dissolves, and wipes. All group of pictures (GOPs) are then extracted from the clip and decomposed further into I-frames and P-frames (B-frames are disregarded). The initial frame of the sequence is manually segmented into objects, and the selected objects are automatically tracked through the entire sequence using MPEG-1/2 motion vectors. Features pertaining to the edge histogram are extracted from each tracked object (I/P frames only) and then maintained with the associated frame. An example image or video clip is then presented to the system and the 5 best matching images are retrieved. Results are shown for the standard video sequences such as foreman, tennis, etc.

Recent database applications deal with temporal data. Such applications are typically oriented towards a large set of users, and therefore need to be equipped with suitable interfaces facilitating the interaction with the system. However, very few empirical studies aimed at testing and validating the effectiveness of various query styles and interfaces have been conducted in the database field. It is of note that temporal information is also relevant in modeling user interaction. We propose a visual query system incorporating aspects related to both application data and data concerning user interaction. The system exploits a graph based formalism and suitable graphical primitives. The main feature of the system is that data about the history of interaction is stored, accessed and dynamically maintained with the same mechanisms as the application data. This approach is an effort towards clearly establishing a link between user interaction and modeling, and data modeling and querying, and also allows a structured analysis of usability results.

This paper reports on the development of a strategy to generate databases used for real-time interactive landscape visualization. The database construction from real world data is intended to be as automated as possible. The primary sources of information are remote sensing imagery recorded by Landsat's Thematic Mapper (TM) and digital elevation models (DEM). Additional datasets (traffic networks and buildings) are added to extend the database. In a first step the TM images are geocoded and then segmented into areas of different land coverage. During the visual simulation highly detailed photo textures are applied onto the terrain based on the classification results to increase the apparent amount of detail. The data processing and integration is carried out using custom image processing and geographic information systems (GIS) software. Finally, a sample visual simulation application is implemented. Emphasis is put on practical implementation to test the feasibility of the approach as a whole.
