For training of no-reference image visual quality metrics large specialized image databases are used. For images of the databases mean opinion scores (MOS) are experimentally obtained collecting judgments of many observers. MOS of a given image reflects an averaged human perception of visual quality of the image. Each database has its own unknown scale of MOS values depending on unique content of the database. For training of no-reference metrics based on convolutional networks usually only one selected database is used, because all MOS values on input of training loss function should be in the same scale. In this paper, a simple and effective method of merging of several large databases into one database with transforming of their MOS into one scale is proposed. Accuracy of the proposed method is analyzed. Merged MOS is used for practical training of no-reference metric. Better effectiveness of the training is shown in comparative analysis.

The article presents a series of algorithms used in the content-based visual query process on databases with color medical images extracted from DICOM files provided by medical tools used in the diagnosis area. Also, the paper presents a detailed study on several directions inside the content-based visual query process. In studying the content-based image query on color feature the transformation from RGB color space to HSV and the quantization at 166 colors was used. For computing the dissimilitude between the query and the target image three metrics were implemented: the Euclidian distance, the histograms intersection and the quadratic distance between histograms. The next study was made on content-based image query on color texture feature. In order to compute the color texture characteristics vectors two methods were implemented: the co-occurrence matrices and Gabor filters. The third studied problem was the content-based region query. For detecting color regions the color set back-projection algorithm was implemented. Statistic studies for this algorithm in keeping track of the patient evolution during the treatment of the peptic ulcers were made

A number of interfaces, based on different techniques which better exploit the human senses, have been recently suggested and implemented so enlarging the bandwidth of the man-machine communication channel. The availability of graphical devices at low cost has given rise to a large diffusion of visual interfaces. The database field is particularly suited for such interfaces mainly because the database is often queried by a casual user, who may not be conversant with conventional query languages. The use of a visual tool may therefore help to access the database, without the dependency on the native language and the limitations imposed by the specific application area. The authors concentrate on the querying strategies developed in existing visual query systems (VQS) by defining a suitable taxonomy and analyzing how these systems can be compared against such a taxonomy.< >

The modelling of perceptual image quality metrics has experienced increased effort in recent years. In order to allow for model design, validation, and comparison, a number of subjective image quality databases has been made available to the research community. Most metrics that were designed using these databases assess the quality uniformly over the whole image, not taking into account stronger attention to salient regions of an image. In order to facilitate incorporation of visual attention (VA) into objective metric design we have conducted an eye tracking experiment. The experiment and its outcomes will be explained in detail in this paper. The actual gaze data recorded in the experiment is publicly available in order to facilitate and encourage VA modelling for image quality metrics.

Multimedia data is generally stored in compressed form in order to efficiently utilize the available storage facilities. Access to archives is dependent on our ability to browse compressed multimedia information-retrieval and tracking from coded video databases. In this paper, a novel visual search engine for video retrieval and tracking from compressed multimedia databases is proposed. The goal of the project is the implementation of a visual browser that operates in a distributed environment where users initiate video searches and retrieve relevant video information simultaneously from multiple video archives. Being presented with a query in the form of template images of objects, the system operates on the compressed video to find the images or video sequences where those objects are present and their positions in the image. Upon user's request, the system will decompress and display only the video sequences of interest.

We present a visual framework for understanding the structure of a relational database. The framework provides coordinated visualization of the database structure and of various implicit relationships among its relations. The main objective of this paper is to report an extended version of the experimental evaluation which aimed at complimenting the previously reported pilot evaluation on the usefulness of the visual framework in understanding various associations among relations. Results obtained from the extended evaluation reported in this paper also seemed to suggest that the visual features provided by the prototype system offer a high level of help to users in instantly recognizing indirect associations, such as path views, among relations.

Rich online map interaction represents a useful tool to get multimedia information related to physical places. With this type of systems, users can automatically compute the optimal route for a trip or to look for entertainment places or hotels near their actual position. Standard maps are defined as a fusion of layers, where each one contains specific data such height, streets, or a particular business location. In this paper we propose the construction of a visual content layer which describes the visual appearance of geographic locations in a city. We captured, by means of a mobile mapping system, a huge set of georeferenced images (> 500 K) which cover the whole city of Barcelona. For each image, hundreds of region descriptions are computed off-line and described as a hash code. This allows an efficient and scalable way of accessing maps by visual content.

With the advent of hard-disk video recording, video databases gradually emerge for consumer applications. The large capacity of disks requires the need for fast storage and retrieval functions. We propose a semantic analyzer for sports video, which is able to automatically extract and analyze key events, such as player behavior. The analyzer employs several visual cues and a model for real-world coordinates, so that speed and position of a player can be determined with sufficient accuracy. It consists of four processing steps: (1) playing event detection, (2) court and player segmentation, as well as a 3-D camera model, (3) player tracking, and (4) event-based high-level analysis exploiting visual cues extracted in the real-world. We show attractive experimental results remarking the system efficiency and classification skills.

Multimedia objects are often described by high-dimensional feature vectors which can be used for retrieval and clustering tasks. We have built an interactive retrieval system for 3D model databases that implements a variety of different feature transforms. Recently, we have enhanced the functionality of our system by integrating a SOM-based visualization module. In this poster demo, we show how 2D maps can be used to improve the effectiveness of retrieval, clustering, and over-viewing tasks in a 3D multimedia system.

This paper presents a prototype implementation written using the visual C++ programming language and interfacing with the commercial ODBMS by Versant. This fuzzy front-end for Versant's object database has the capability to visually create fuzzy linguistic terms and use them for object attribute values. The database may be queried using fuzzy/crisp predicates over fuzzy/crisp attributes and the capability to reason with fuzzy attribute-valued objects is provided through integration with the FuzzyCLIPS expert system.
