People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show deficits in the processing of visual stimuli. This systematic review summarized the differences in visual event-related potential (ERP) components among ASD and typically developing individuals. Major databases were searched for finding eligible studies that investigated differences in visual ERP components between ASD and typically developing individuals. Sixty-three eligible studies were found. Analyses showed that the mean differences were significant between ASD and typically developing subjects for N100 amplitude at the anterior brain region for non-face stimuli, N170 amplitude and latency at the posterior brain region for face processing, and P200 latency at the posterior region. Characteristics of stimuli including the emotional content, predictability, familiarity and the reactions that participants were asked to perform during visual stimuli processing were all important confounding factors. The highlighted ERP components can be used as potential biomarkers for the future ASD detection systems. ERP analyses could obtain a promising tool for investigating the impaired visual information processing in ASD.

Object recognition is often viewed as a feedforward, bottom-up process in machine learning, but in real neural systems, object recognition is a complicated process which involves the interplay between two signal pathways. One is the parvocellular pathway (P-pathway), which is slow and extracts fine features of objects;the other is the magnocellular pathway (M-pathway), which is fast and extracts coarse features of objects. It has been suggested that the interplay between the two pathways endows the neural system with the capacity of processing visual information rapidly, adaptively, and robustly. However, the underlying computational mechanism remains largely unknown. In this study, we build a two-pathway model to elucidate the computational properties associated with the interactions between two visual pathways. Specifically, we model two visual pathways using two convolution neural networks: one mimics the P-pathway, referred to as FineNet, which is deep, has small-size kernels, and receives detailed visual inputs;the other mimics the M-pathway, referred to as CoarseNet, which is shallow, has large-size kernels, and receives blurred visual inputs. We show that CoarseNet can learn from FineNet through imitation to improve its performance, FineNet can benefit from the feedback of CoarseNet to improve its robustness to noise;and the two pathways interact with each other to achieve rough-to-fine information processing. Using visual backward masking as an example, we further demonstrate that our model can explain visual cognitive behaviors that involve the interplay between two pathways. Image extraction and visual information processing using bacteriorhodopsin (bR)-based bioelectronic devices is presented. Image extraction was achieved using a photoreceptor consisting of bR and spiropyran films. The undesired signals from the photoreceptor were automatically eliminated from the whole signal by spiropyran films acting as an optical noise filter that increases the target signal to an undesired signal ratio. For the information processing, the photoreceptor consisting of bR and lipid films deposited with different configurations was used and the target signals were processed to achieve the pattern recognition. The pattern recognition was based on not only the response variability of bacteriorhodopsin, induced by different film configurations, but also on the initial learning process. The input patterns were predicted by simple calculation with the known signals through the initial learning process. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The low -rank (LR) property is widely applied to capture the global as well as intrinsic structure of the given data in different visual information processing tasks. Actually, there are three key information to determine the performance and generalization low -rank property based methods: (1) visual intrinsic structural information, (2) visual representation structural information, (3) visual robust information. To achieve these jointly in a unified framework, in this paper, we propose D ual L ow -rank S tructure E mbedding (DLSE) that embeds structural and robust information. We additionally proposed the J oint M atrix -based L inear R epresentation (JMLR) and theoretically proved it can realize DLSE. The proposed method was validated on 6 datasets (from 1,440 samples to 70,000 samples in size) and showed a promising performance in visual recognition (14.32% improvement compared with the deep features). In addition, we performed multiple analysis on robustness, representation, and its parameters to show the effectiveness of DLSE from different aspects.

Advanced modeling of visual information processing:: A multi-resolution directional-oriented image transform based on Gaussian derivatives

In this work, a multi-channel model for image representation is derived based on the scale-space theory. This model is inspired in biological insights and includes some important properties of human vision such as the Gaussian derivative model for early vision proposed by Young [The Gaussian derivative theory of spatial vision: analysis of cortical cell receptive field line-weighting profiles, General Motors Res. Labs. Rep. 4920, 1986]. The image transform that we propose in this work uses analysis operators similar to those of the Hermite transform at multiple scales, but the synthesis scheme of our approach integrates the responses of all channels at different scales. The advantages of this scheme are: (1) Both analysis and synthesis operators are Gaussian derivatives. This allows for simplicity during implementation. (2) The operator functions possess better space-frequency localization, and it is possible to separate adjacent scales one octave apart, according to Wilson's results on human vision channels. [H.R. (3) In the case of two-dimensional (2-D) signals, it is easy to analyze local orientations at different scales. A discrete approximation is also derived from an asymptotic relation between the Gaussian derivatives and the discrete binomial filters. We show in this work how the proposed transform can be applied to the problems of image coding, noise reduction and image fusion. Practical considerations are also of concern. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Does vision therapy for visual information processing improve academic performance? A randomised clinical trial

PurposeTo determine whether a typical vision therapy (VT) programme designed to improve visual information processing (VIP) skills is effective in improving these skills and/or academic *** used a double-blind, randomised clinical trial to compare VIP VT to placebo training. Participating schools referred a sample of 579 early primary school children identified as being within the lower third of their class for literacy. From the referred sample, we identified 247 children eligible to participate (passed visions and auditory processing screening, and VIP performance <34th percentile), 94 of whom participated. Matching IQ, school grade and sex was achieved by sorting hierarchically on these values and then alternately allocating to VT or placebo groups. Both programmes ran for 10 weeks and consisted of 33 h working at home and 4 h working in office. The VT programme was indicative of that employed in Australian paediatric optometry practices, with the placebo programme containing similar activities, except targeting skills within a child's competencies and with specific VIP development activities removed. The main outcome measures were score change on three standardised educational tests (reading comprehension, spelling and mathematics) and six VIP tests, both immediately post-intervention (PI) and 6 months ***-nine children completed the programmes. The VT programme produced no significant improvement in the three educational tests or in five of the six VIP tests compared to the control. The VT programme improved visual sequential memory (VSM) by a moderate amount compared to the control (Cohen's d = 0.57 and 0.52, immediately PI and at 6 months, respectively: p < 0.03 and p < 0.02).ConclusionsThe VIP and academic performance benefits from a VT programme were largely identical to those from a control programme, both immediately and 6-month PI. The main provisions for solving the complex problem of efficiently processing visual information in an automated optronic ground-space monitoring system using artificial intelligence are presented. The basic relationships and statements of the formally developed body of mathematical tools for processing information in real-time mode are presented. This body of tools has been used for developing the corresponding efficient information and mathematical support for automated optronic systems. The experimental results are presented.

Improving readability of an evaluation tool for low-income clients using visual information processing theories

Literacy is an issue for many low-income audiences. Using visual information processing theories, the goal was improving readability of a food behavior checklist and ultimately improving its ability to accurately capture existing changes in dietary behaviors. Using group interviews, low-income clients (n = 18) evaluated 4 visual styles. The text plus color photographs style was preferred over the other 3 visual styles: text only, text plus black and white line drawings, and text plus gray-scale photographs. Employing cognitive interviewing in an iterative process, clients (n = 25) recommended simplifying text for 10 items, modifying content for 15 of 16 visuals, and replacing text with visual content for 7 of 16 items. Professional staff (n = 7) and educators (n = 10) verified that visuals and revised text accurately reflected the content of each item. Clients reported that the revised checklist captured their attention, added pleasure to the evaluation process, improved their understanding of the behaviors in question, and facilitated comprehension of text. Readability scores improved by more than 2 grades. This process can be duplicated by others interested in enhancing the quality of existing evaluation tools.

Effect of acute hypoglycemia on visual information processing in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Acute hypoglycemia in people with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus causes general impairment in cognitive performance. The effects on more specific cognitive processes are less well defined. Acute hypoglycemia has been shown to impair visual information processing in nondiabetic human subjects and has now been examined in 16 adult subjects with type 1 diabetes. All subjects had normal visual acuity and no diabetic retinopathy, and their median (range) age was 24 (18-47) years with a median (range) duration of type 1 diabetes of 8 (2-18) years and a mean (SD) HbA(1c) of 8.5 (1.3)%. A hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp technique was used to maintain arterialized blood glucose at 5.0 mmol l(-1), and on separate test days, either euglycemia was continued or hypoglycemia (2.6 mmol l(-1)) was induced. During each condition subjects performed tests of visual processing and cognitive function. Hypoglycemia caused a significant disruption in general cognitive ability as assessed by digit symbol (p < 0.001) and trail-making B (p < 0.05) tasks. Conventional measures of visual acuity were unaffected by hypoglycemia, but visual information processing deteriorated significantly as indexed by inspection time (p < 0.005) and visual change detection (p < 0.01). Contrast sensitivity tended to deteriorate during hypoglycemia (p = 0.06). In conclusion, hypoglycemia impairs important aspects of early visual information processing and contrast sensitivity in adults with type 1 diabetes. Further research is needed to evaluate the functional relevance of such changes for everyday tasks that require the intake of visual information at speed and under conditions of low contrast.
