The authors discuss the necessity of multiple flexible output forms in an educational Web simulation environment. Ideally, such an environment should allow the creation of visual, interactivesimulations and their integration in the pages of the Web document being constructed. As a suitable candidate for this, the authors propose their system to generate documents for the Web that consists of three layers: continuous simulation language OOCSMP and its associated language layers SODA-1L and SODA-2L. OOCSMP and SODA are compiled into Java applets and HTML/VRML pages by a compiler called C-OOL. Different output forms can be combined to solve and show the results of a simulation problem. The authors propose a procedure to guide the construction of educational courses on technical or scientific subjects with their tools. This procedure is used to enhance an existing educational Web course with a new page showing the simulation of a robot arm Unimation PUMA260.

This paper describes an interactive 3D animation approach that may help with the investigation, understanding and interpretation of results for a visual interactive simulation (VIS) project. The method uses a graphics algorithm to draw on a computer screen '3D contour maps' which show the response of a simulation model to changes in its input parameters. A previous paper showed that it is possible for a neural network to learn the response of a simulation. This paper shows that the speed of response of a neural network can be exploited so that 3D animation sequences of the simulation's results can be produced. It is possible to rotate the '3D contour map', zoom, pan, or generally view the projection from different perspectives. Two example problems are described. The paper suggests that this approach can further improve the quality of VIS by being able to give comprehensive graphic 3D sensitivity analyses to the original problem under investigation.

Following promising results in test markets and successful pilot-scale manufacturing, the Board of a major Canadian manufacturer took the decision to proceed to develop the design for a full-scale production plant for a new advanced-technology product. The success of this new product was seen as critical to the Company's future, but Company personnel had limited experience with the new production technology and with the design of plants of this large scale. Finally, competitors from the USA and Europe were known to be working on similar products resulting in a sense of urgency in getting the product to the marketplace. A visualinteractive decision support system built around a simulation model was developed using a methodology designed to help management understand the plant design issues and to help them resolve various key plant design options. When completed, the model gave management a tool which was used to analyse alternative plant designs and different production and manpower scheduling scenarios under a broad range of production conditions. The intensity of worldwide competition in this new product market, and the critical importance of this product to this Canadian corporation, have led to the decision to omit the name of the corporation from this article. In addition, certain production details have been disguised.

Outbound logistic initiatives for business-to-consumer attended home deliveries have conventionally been fraught with uncertainties due to random customer demand and the exorbitant operational costs of servicing individual residences. Exacerbating this uncertainty is the inability to adequately visualize order capture, vehicle dispatch, deliveries, and vehicle return with interactivesimulation applications that permit intuitive and interactive sensitivity analyses by incorporating variables such as profitability, friction of transportation distance, and varying customer populations per regions. This research introduces and displays a visualsimulation application that incorporates the above factors into an animated user interface while generating various data-intensive reports in real time. The fully functional application is planned to be implemented as a web service for enterprises either considering home-delivery initiatives, or as an in-house enterprise supply-chain optimization engine for firms looking to streamline their existing outbound "last-mile'' logistic strategies.

Research on the application of 3D visualization and virtual reality (VR) in discrete-event simulation (DES) has received increased attention in the past two decades. The increasing popularity of the 3D display in DES is mainly due to superior display capabilities and the associated benefits that it offers. However, the 2D display also continues to enjoy active use to date, thus provoking some fierce debates questioning the need for the 3D and VR if the 2D interface suffices. Several studies comparing the effectiveness of the different visualization methods also produce different conclusions. This paper undertakes a meta-analysis of the different positions and synthesizes the findings from 162 studies on the impacts of the 2D display versus 3D/VR on user performance on various DES tasks. The results highlight four key findings. First, the perception that the 2D display is more effective for model development is misleading as 3D/VR offers overall better performance and quality of models. Second, 3D/VR enables more effective performance than 2D display for model verification and validation. Third, 3D/VR decreases the time taken for verification, validation, experimentation, and analysis of results, but can increase model development time. Finally, the latent variables such as the application domains and nature of the problems tackled have no direct or indirect influence on the efficacy of the 3D display/VR versus 2D on DES task performance.

The use of a neural network to represent the results of a simulation model is described. The neural network is implemented as an interaction within a visual interactive simulation model. All results obtained from the simulation are offered to the neural network. After a suitable period of training the quality of results obtained from the network matches those obtained by running the original simulation model. An example which embeds a neural network as an interaction within a visual interactive simulation model is described. The example shows how the combined system may enhance the decision making quality of a visual interactive simulation model.

Many writers and practitioners have mentioned the difficulties that result from randomness in visual interactive simulation or animated simulation modelling. This paper discusses the use of VIS to model transient system behaviour, and proposes some approaches to stochastic VIS modelling which may be helpful in overcoming the difficulties.

Knowledge elicitation is a well-known bottleneck in the production of knowledge-based systems (KBS). This is mainly due to the tacit property of knowledge, which makes it difficult to be explicated, and hence analysed. Past research has shown that visual interactive simulation (VIS) could effectively be used to elicit episodic knowledge that is appropriate for machine learning (an AI capability that includes inductive learning) purposes, with a view of building a KBS. Nonetheless, the VIS-based elicitation process still has much room for improvement. Based in the Ford Dagenham Engine Assembly Plant, a research project is being undertaken to investigate the individual/joint effects of visual display level and mode of problem case generation on the elicitation process. This paper looks at the methodology employed and some issues that have been encountered to date.

assigning workers to machines dynamically, so as to achieve production objectives, is known as a difficult problem which must be addressed in several manufacturing systems. In fact, production managers must determine when and where to assign workers, which is a very difficult task because of the complexity induced by the dynamic changes and the stochastic behavior of these systems. The current scientific literature is mainly oriented towards static assignments problems (only few dynamic heuristics are published). We propose a new approach whose aim is to help the managers in improving their knowledge about how to assign workers in real time. It is based on Serious Games built using visual interactive simulation (discrete event). Our experiments show that an appropriate training using the proposed game can improve the users' ability to make good decisions about dynamic workers assignment and that human decisions can become more efficient than existing workers assignment rules found in the literature.

This paper proposes a practical and efficient method for the development of visualinteractive meta-simulation models using neural networks. The method first uses a randomised simulation experimental design to obtain a set of results from a previously validated simulation model. The bootstrap technique is used on these results to generate a series of neural network models that are then trained using back propagation. The visualinteractive meta-simulation model consists of the collective response from the trained neural network models. The accuracy of the meta-simulation model is assessed using the bootstrap technique and improved accuracy obtained by increasing the size of the randomised simulation experimental design set and re-training. This paper describes the approach, gives results for Eve example problems and suggests that the method is a practical extension to visual interactive simulation.
