Mobile manipulation in many respects represents the next generation of robot applications. An important part of design of such systems is the integration of techniques for navigation, recognition, control, and planning to achieve a robust solution. To study this problem three different approaches to mobile manipulation have been designed and implemented. A prototypical application that requires navigation and manipulation has been chosen as a target for the systems. In this paper we present the basic design of the three systems and draw some general lessons on design and implementation.

Human task performance with imaging sensors is characterized by perception experiments involving ensembles of observers viewing an ensemble of task relevant images from real sensors. Summary statistics from perception experiments are used, along with detailed descriptions of the sensors and early human vision processes to build predictive models such as NV-IPM. Use of these models typically requires knowledge of more than 100 specific parameters regarding the sensor, the viewing conditions, and the task. In this research we seek to do a blind prediction of task performance using task relevant image ensembles and image processing operations that produce statistically similar outputs to those obtained in real human perception experiments. We restrict our investigation to the task of identifying tracked vehicles. The data we seek to replicate through image processing are similarity matrices derived from the confusion matrices of actual perception experiments. This paper updates our work to date examining primarily the correspondence between several image processing approaches and perception data.

In contrast with machine vision, human can recognize an object from complex background with great flexibility. For example, given the task of finding and circling all cars (no further information) in a picture, you may build a virtual image in mind from the task (or target) description before looking at the picture. Specifically, the virtual car image may be composed of the key components such as driver cabin and wheels. In this paper, we propose a component-based target recognition method by simulating the human recognition process. The component templates (equivalent to the virtual image in mind) of the target (car) are manually decomposed from the target feature image. Meanwhile, the edges of the testing image can be extracted by using a difference of Gaussian (DOG) model that simulates the spatiotemporal response in visual process. A phase correlation matching algorithm is then applied to match the templates with the testing edge image. If all key component templates are matched with the examining object, then this object is recognized as the target. Besides the recognition accuracy, we will also investigate if this method works with part targets (half cars). In our experiments, several natural pictures taken on streets were used to test the proposed method. The preliminary results show that the component-based recognition method is very promising.

Earlier studies of the human vision system suggest that a complex object may be recognized from the qualitative features associated with its boundary. Since the human vision system uses qualitative features for object recognition, it is extremely robust to deformation caused by noise, obstruction, scale change, or optical distortion. We considered various qualitative descriptors for digital images. The descriptors developed in this research are based on the estimated curvature function from digital boundaries and can discriminate features such as straightness of a contour segment, perpendicularity of two contour segments, parallelness of two straight contour segments, parallelness of two curved contour segments in a global sense, and the direction of convergence if two straight contour segments are not parallel. We demonstrated that the qualitative descriptors developed in this paper can be applied for identification of elementary shapes, such as cylinders, bricks, cones, etc. We also discussed the recognition of more complex shapes after decomposing them into simpler components.

The Army performance assessment methodology for visual and infrared countermeasures typically uses an area weighted average temperature/contrast (AWAT or AWAC) description of an equivalent uniform target in a uniform background scene. A simplistic target/background description is not sufficient to evaluate most signature countermeasure (CM) applications. This paper analyzes alternative strategies for using a realistic target/background model to achieve valid assessments of CM technology.

This paper asks how the vision community can contribute to the goal of achieving perceptually lossless image fidelity with maximum compression. In order to maintain a sharp focus the discussion is restricted to the JPEG-DCT image compression standard. The numerous problems that confront vision researchers entering the field of image compression are discussed. Special attention is paid to the connection between the contrast sensitivity function and the JPEG quantization matrix.

Attributed Fuzzy Tournaments (AFT''s) are a special type of attributed fuzzy graphs which are useful to represent uncertainties inherent to many realworld problems. A new algorithm that finds the best fuzzy matching configuration between components of two Attributed Fuzzy Transitive Tournaments (AFTT''s) is proposed. The best fuzzy matching between two AFTT''s is the matching configuration between components of both AFTT''s such that the overall distance measure between two AFTT''s possesses the minimum value. Useful applications of the proposed algorithm can be found in scene matching where the nodes of an AFT represent the objects in the scene and the arcs represent the relationships among the objects. Uncertainties of the image are represented via fuzzy membership values associated with the nodes and arcs. An examples showing the usefulness of the algorithm in pattern matching is shown through image analysis. I.

The business presentation market has traditionally been the mainstay of the projection business, but as these users find the projectors work well showing movies at home, interest in the home entertainment market is heating up. The idea of creating a theater environment in the home, complete with a big-screen projector and quality audio system, is not new. Wealthy patrons have been doing it for years. But can the concept be extended to ordinary living rooms? Many think so. Already, pioneers like Sony, InFocus, Toshiba and Plus Vision are offering first generation products - and others will follow. But this market will require projectors that have different performance characteristics than those designed for data projection. In this paper, we will discuss how the requirements for a home theater projector differ from those of a data projector. We will provided updated information on who is doing what in this segment and give some insight into the growth potential.

This paper reviews an evolving family of surface modeling primitives for use in computer vision, graphics, CAGD, and data analysis. Dynamic surfaces offer significantly greater power to these applications domains than do conventional, geometric surface modeling primitives. The benefits stem from computational physics: Simulated forces influence the shapes and motions of dynamic surface according to the basic mechanical principles of nonrigid bodies with given mass and damping distributions and deformation energies. Dynamic surfaces are applicable both to static surface reconstruction problems and to more general surface estimation from structured or unstructured time-varying data. In particular, efficient, recursive solutions to time dependent problems result from a Kalman estimation approach in which dynamic surfaces serve as nonstationary system models.

We find that pulsed fluoroscopy of stationary objects gives average dose savings of 22 percent, 38 percent, and 49 percent at 15, 10, and 7.5 acq/sec, respectively. Dose savings depend on object size, with less savings for smaller objects. A model that includes the spatio-temporal response of the human visual system (HVS) describes these results with one free parameter. Pulsed-30 is always better than continuous for detecting moving objects. Likewise, pulsed-15 saves dose as compared to pulsed-30, but the savings decrease for high velocities and small objects.
