In this paper we present a formal approach, based on meta-modelling and graph transformation, to the generation of environments for visual languages (VLs) supporting multiple views. The VL syntax is defined by means of a meta-model. Views for the VL are created by selecting the classes, associations, attributes and constraints that are part of them. Once the environment is generated, the view models are translated into a global, unique model where consistency checking and further analysis can be performed by means of graph grammars. These ideas have been newly implemented in the AToM(3) tool.

We present the visualization of an array for a visual programming language, designed with the qualities of transparency, clarity, visual appeal and efficiency in mind. These qualities are essential to making the array useful to our target users, people without significant programming experience or computer-science background. We then implemented the visualization in the visual programming language known as the Data Factory, and ran a preliminary experiment to help us evaluate the design.

In this paper we propose an approach for constructing sketch parsers whose recognition accuracy and speed is significantly improved by acquiring information on the user's sketching style during a training phase. The construction process consists in specifying a sketch grammar description of the language syntax, automatically generating a parser from such specification, and let the user train the recognition system on a set of sketch sentences.

Unix tools as visual programming components in a GUI-builder environment

Development environments based on ActiveX controls and JavaBeans are marketed as 'visual programming' platforms;in practice their visual dimension is limited to the design and implementation of an application's graphical user interface (GUI). The availability of sophisticated GUI development environments and visual component development frameworks is now providing viable platforms for implementing visual programming within general-purpose platforms, i.e. for the specification of non-GUI program functionality using visual representations. We describe how specially designed reflective components can be used in an industry-standard visual programming environment to graphically specify sophisticated data transformation pipelines that interact with GUI elements. The components are based on Unix-style filters repackaged as ActiveX controls. Their visual layout on the development environment canvas is used to specify the connection topology of the resultant pipeline. The process of converting filter-style programs into visual controls is automated using a domain-specific language. We demonstrate the approach through the design and the visual implementation of a GUI-based spell-checker. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Agile methodologies employ light-weight development practices emphasizing a test-driven approach to the development of software systems. Modern agile development environments support this approach by providing tools that automate most of the work required to effectively deal with change, including unit testing and different forms of refactoring. lit this paper we discuss how to apply such techniques within the JOpera visual Composition Language. More precisely, we show how we used the visual language to implement a regression testing framework for compositions written in the language itself, and how we introduced support in the visual environment for refactorings such as renaming, synchronization of set-vice interface changes, and extraction/inlining across different levels of nesting. This is done in the context of the Web service composition tools provided with the JOpera for Eclipse research platform.

A domain-specific visual language, Function Block Language (FBL), is used in Metso Automation for writing automation control programs. The same engineering environment is used for both forward and reverse engineering activities, providing convenient support for the maintenance and evolution of FBL programs. Various data and program analysis methods are applied to study the FBL programs stored in project library archives. Metadata stored about the program allows various kinds of queries and enables focusing the analysis to certain kinds of programs. The application of the provided analysis methods further aids the maintenance and reuse activities. Software and data reverse engineering techniques are traditionally used to support program and data comprehension, respectively. In this paper we show how corresponding techniques can be used to analyze visual programs. The visual language under study in this paper is FBL. FBL and the analysis techniques proposed have been used in real-world projects at Metso Automation.

Today, complex, networked, self-adaptive mechatronic systems which integrate advanced control engineering and software engineering concepts within a single software system are envisioned. These systems adapt their structures at runtime to react to detected environmental changes, to change their system goals, or to react to a change of the system structure. To enable the development of such systems, an integration of object-oriented modeling techniques such as UML and control theory approaches such as functional block modeling is required. Thereby, the successful visual modeling concepts of control engineering should be preserved, as otherwise wide acceptance in industry, which is mainly dominated by control engineers, is very unlikely In this paper we present such a visual integration for UML 2.0 components, Statecharts, and block diagrams developed within the MECHATRONIC UML approach. It permits to graphically model reconfiguration between several pre-defined configurations with statecharts and instance diagrams as well as to specify, the flexible assembly of control configuration if needed by means of visual reconfiguration rules.

We present a system for real-time configuration of multimodal interfaces to Virtual Environments (VE). The flexibility of our tool is supported by a semantics-based representation of VEs. Semantic descriptors are used to define interaction devices and virtual entities under control. We use portable (XML) descriptors to define the I/O channels of a variety of interaction devices. Semantic description of virtual objects turns them into reactive entities with whom the user can communicate in multiple ways. This article gives details on the semantics-based representation and presents some examples of multimodal interfaces created with our system, including gestures-based and PDA-based interfaces, amongst others.

We present further steps in our research into visual languages for animation. Animation is a rich mode of communication that is currently accessible to few, because animation systems are complex. Some systems try to make animation simple but put severe limits on users' creative expression. Our field studies are demonstrating that would-be animators need to express animation in a wide variety of ways. We are developing a taxonomy of forms of expression for animation that will help the designers of visual languages for animation to determine which expressive forms to support. Our end goal is to build animation sketching systems that use pen input to make animation universally accessible.

visual modeling languages are, often used today it? engineering domains, Mathworks' Simulink/Stateflow, for simulation, signal processing and controls being the prime example. However, they are also becoming suitable for implementing other computational tasks, like model transformations. In this paper we briefly introduce GReAT: a visual language with simple, yet powerful semantics for implementing transformations on attributed, typed hypergraphs with the help of explicitly sequenced graph transformation rules. The main contribution of the paper is a Simulink/Stateflow code generator that generates executable code (running on a distributed plattform) from the visual input models. The paper provides an overview of the algorithms used and their realization in GReAT.
