SEEVis: A Smart Emergency Evacuation Plan visualization System with Data-Driven Shot designs

Despite the significance of tracking human mobility dynamics in a large-scale earthquake evacuation for an effective first response and disaster relief, the general understanding of evacuation behaviors remains limited. Numerous individual movement trajectories, disaster damages of civil engineering, associated heterogeneous data attributes, as well as complex urban environment all obscure disaster evacuation analysis. Although visualization methods have demonstrated promising performance in emergency evacuation analysis, they cannot effectively identify and deliver the major features like speed or density, as well as the resulting evacuation events like congestion or turn-back. In this study, we propose a shot design approach to generate customized and narrative animations to track different evacuation features with different exploration purposes of users. Particularly, an intuitive scene feature graph that identifies the most dominating evacuation events is first constructed based on user-specific regions or their tracking purposes on a certain feature. An optimal camera route, i.e., a storyboard is then calculated based on the previous user-specific regions or features. For different evacuation events along this route, we employ the corresponding shot design to reveal the underlying feature evolution and its correlation with the environment. Several case studies confirm the efficacy of our system. The feedback from experts and users with different backgrounds suggests that our approach indeed helps them better embrace a comprehensive understanding of the earthquake evacuation.

Vocational Education Training (VET) is becoming a more integral part of the curriculum to account for the requirement of skilled workforce in the global scenario. Augmented Reality (AR) can serve as a valuable medium to integrate this aspect into mainstream educational systems. In this work, we explore the feasibility of AR for vocational skill training of students at the K12 level based on the state of the art literature analysis. Furthermore, we propose opportunities concerned with the aspects of effective integration and usability of these training modules into the traditional pedagogical systems.

We introduce the notion of a data-first design study which is triggered by the acquisition of real-world data instead of specific stakeholder analysis questions. We propose an adaptation of the design study methodology framework to provide practical guidance and to aid transferability to other data-first design processes. We discuss opportunities and risks by reflecting on two of our own data-first design studies. We review 64 previous design studies and identify 16 of them as edge cases with characteristics that may indicate a data-first design process in action.

In many bedside procedures, surgeons must rely on their spatiotemporal reasoning to estimate the position of an internal target by manually measuring external anatomical landmarks. One example of such a procedure is ventriculostomy, where the surgeon inserts the catheter in the patient's skull to divert the cerebrospinal fluid and alleviate the intracranial pressure. However, one-quarter to one-third of the insertions miss the target which can ultimately lead to undesirable surgical outcomes. We have developed an interactive navigation system using mixed reality on a head-mounted display that overlays the target directly on the patient's anatomy and provides visual guidance for the surgeon to insert the catheter on the correct path to the target.

Many interactive data systems combine visual representations of data with embedded algorithmic support for automation and data exploration. To effectively support transparent and explainable data systems, it is important for researchers and designers to know how users understand the system. We discuss the evaluation of users' mental models of system logic. Mental models are challenging to capture and analyze. While common evaluation methods aim to approximate the user's final mental model after a period of system usage, user understanding continuously evolves as users interact with a system over time. In this paper, we review many common mental model measurement techniques, discuss tradeoffs, and recommend methods for deeper, more meaningful evaluation of mental models when using interactive data analysis and visualization systems. We present guidelines for evaluating mental models over time to help track the evolution of specific model updates and how they may map to the particular use of interface features and data queries. By asking users to describe what they know and how they know it, researchers can collect structured, time-ordered insight into a user's conceptualization process while also helping guide users to their own discoveries.

One major challenge in the field of medical education is teaching students to empathize with patients. To help address this need, we have designed a system in virtual reality (VR) that can simulate macular degeneration and that requires medical students to carry out a self-medication task from the perspective of a patient. The simulation includes a home environment, interactive medication bottles and pills, reading requirement, task list, and completion goals. In contrast with prior work, this simulation is designed for direct integration into a university level physical diagnosis course. design considerations for practical use and measurement of empathy in a large scale, time-constrained environment are also discussed.

Navigation is a crucial cognitive skill that allows humans and animals to move from one place to another without getting lost. In neurological patients this skill can be impaired, when neural structures that form the brain networks important for spatial learning and navigation are impaired. Thus, spatial navigation represents an important measure of cognitive health that is impossible to test in a clinical examination, due to lack of space in examination rooms. Consequently. spatial navigation is largely neglected in the clinical assessment of neurological. neurosurgical and psychiatric patients. Virtual reality represents a unique opportunity to develop a systematic assessment of spatial navigation for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of millions of patients presenting with cognitive decline in the clinical routine. Therefore, we have adapted a classical spatial navigation paradigm that was developed for animal research, the "Morris Water Maze" as an openly available Virtual Reality (VR) application, that allows objective quantification of navigational skills in humans. This tool may be used in the future to aid the assessment of the human navigation system in health and neurological disease.

During the coronavirus pandemic, visualizations gained a new level of popularity and meaning for a wider audience. People were bombarded with a wide set of public health visualizations ranging from simple graphs to complex interactive dashboards. In a pandemic setting, where large amounts of the world population are socially distancing themselves, it becomes an urgent need to refine existing user experience evaluation methods for remote settings to understand how people make sense out of COVID-19 related visualizations. When evaluating visualizations aimed towards the general public with vastly different socio-demographic backgrounds and varying levels of technical savviness and data literacy, it is important to understand user feedback beyond aspects such as speed, task accuracy, or usability problems. As a part of this wider evaluation perspective, micro-phenomenology has been used to evaluate static and narrative visualizations to reveal the lived experience in a detailed way. Building upon these studies, we conducted a user study to understand how to employ Elicitation (aka Micro-phenomenological) interviews in remote settings. In a case study, we investigated what experiences the participants had with map-based interactive visualizations. Our findings reveal positive and negative aspects of conducting Elicitation interviews remotely. Our results can inform the process of planning and executing remote Elicitation interviews to evaluate interactive visualizations. In addition, we share recommendations regarding visualization techniques and interaction design about public health data.

The effectiveness of a visualization technique is dependent on how well it supports the tasks or goals of an end-user. To measure the effectiveness of a visualization technique, researchers often use a comparative study design. In a comparative study, two or more visualization techniques are compared over a set of tasks and commonly measure human performance in terms of task accuracy and completion time. Despite the critical role of tasks in comparative studies, the current lack of guidance in existing literature on best practices for task selection and communication of research results in evaluation studies is problematic. In this work, we systematically identify and curate the task-based challenges of comparative studies by reviewing existing visualization literature on the topic. Furthermore, for each of the presented challenges we discuss the potential threats to validity for a comparative study. The challenges discussed in this paper are further backed by evidence identified in a detailed survey of comparative tree visualization studies. Finally, we recommend best practices from personal experience and the surveyed tree visualization studies to provide guidelines for other researchers to mitigate the challenges. visualizations can enhance the efficiency of Cyber Defense Analysts, Cyber Defense Incident Responders and Network Operations Specialists (Subject Matter Experts, SME) by providing contextual information for various cybersecurity-related datasets and data sources. We propose that customized, stereoscopic 3D visualizations, aligned with SMEs internalized representations of their data, may enhance their capability to understand the state of their systems in ways that flat displays with either text, 2D or 3D visualizations cannot afford. For these visualizations to be useful and efficient, we need to align these to SMEs internalized understanding of their data. In this paper we propose a method for interviewing SMEs to extract their implicit and explicit understanding of the data that they work with, to create useful, interactive, stereoscopically perceivable visualizations that would assist them with their tasks.
