With the wide applications of algorithmic trading, it has become critical for traders to build a winning trading algorithm to beat the market. However, due to the lack of efficient tools, traders mainly rely on their memory to manually compare the algorithm instances of a trading algorithm and further select the best trading algorithm instance for the real trading deployment. We work closely with industry practitioners to discover and consolidate user requirements and develop an interactive visual analytics system for trading algorithm optimization. Structured expert interviews are conducted to evaluate TradAO and a representative case study is documented for illustrating the system effectiveness. To the best of our knowledge, previous financial data visual analyses have mainly aimed to assist investment managers in investment portfolio analysis but have neglected the need of traders in developing trading algorithms for portfolio execution. TradAO is the first visual analytics system that assists users in comprehensively exploring the performances of a trading algorithm with different parameter settings.

Animated visualization is becoming increasingly popular as a compelling way to illustrate changes in time series data. However, maintaining the viewer's focus throughout the entire animation is difficult because of its time-consuming nature. Viewers are likely to become bored and distracted during the ever-changing animated visualization. Informed by the role of foreshadowing that builds the expectation in film and literature, we introduce visual foreshadowing to improve the engagement of animated visualizations. In specific, we propose designs of visual foreshadowing that engage the audience while watching the animation. To demonstrate our approach, we built a proof-of-concept animated visualization authoring tool that incorporates visual foreshadowing techniques with various styles. Our user study indicates the effectiveness of our foreshadowing techniques on improving engagement for animated visualization.

Virtual Reality (VR) headsets with embedded eye trackers are appearing as consumer devices (e.g. HTC Vive Eye, FOVE). These devices could be used in VR-based education (e.g., a virtual lab, a virtual field trip) in which a live teacher guides a group of students. The eye tracking could enable better insights into students' activities and behavior patterns. For real-time insight, a teacher's VR environment can display student eye gaze. These visualizations would help identify students who are confused/distracted, and the teacher could better guide them to focus on important objects. We present six gaze visualization techniques for a VR-embedded teacher's view, and we present a user study to compare these techniques. The results suggest that a short particle trail representing eye trajectory is promising. In contrast, 3D heatmaps (an adaptation of traditional 2D heatmaps) for visualizing gaze over a short time span are problematic.

In the collaborative project NOISE AQUARIUM, visualizations of tiny plankton species were created to present them as large as they are important for Earth's ecosystems. Tomographic scanned microscopic organisms are presented in immersive art installations including Virtual and Augmented Reality features. The main challenge was to transfer the visual data of the scans into the interactive virtual world. In the context of art and science collaborations, the described practice was found to offer opportunities to convey important topics in a memorable way.

Urban climate data remain complex to analyze regarding their spatial distribution. The co-visualization of simulated air temperature into urban models could help experts to analyze horizontal and vertical spatial distributions. We design a co-visualization framework enabling simulated air temperature data exploration, based on the graphic representation of three types of geometric proxies, and their co-visualization with a 3D urban model with various possible rendering styles. Through this framework, we aim at allowing meteorological researchers to visually analyze and interpret the relationships between simulated air temperature data and urban morphology.

Several neuroocular pathologies, from Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) to the most recently discovered Spaceflight Associated Neuroocular Syndrome (SANS), cause neural vision errors ranging from mild scotomas to irreversible vision loss. The complexity of the human visual system and many accommodations and affordances within its numerous pathways have made it difficult to study perceptual deficits due to damaged neural structure of the visual system. This barrier prevents the development of effective treatments or rehabilitation regimes to help patients recover their functional vision. In this project we propose a novel computational and mathematical system enabled by advances in Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality (VAMR) that allows patients recover visual function. The proposed system enables patients suffering from neuroocular damage establish a parametric model of their perceptual deficit through a battery of vision tests administered by a Head-Mounted Display (HMD). This model is applied to modify the image in the scotomatous region of the affected eye to invoke binocular interactions to compensate for the visual deficit. In order to establish the viability of binocular interactions (i.e., suppression), we conducted a small preliminary study with healthy controls. The results show that healthy subjects when presented with scotomas in their visual field recover visual function by utilizing the proposed system.

Monitoring conditions in the periglacial areas of Antarctica helps geographers and geologists to understand physical processes associated with mesoscale land systems. Analyzing these unique temporal datasets poses a significant challenge for domain experts, due to the complex and often incomplete data, for which corresponding exploratory tools are not available. In this paper, we present a novel visual analysis tool for extraction and interactive exploration of temporal measurements captured at the polar station at the James Ross Island in Antarctica. The tool allows domain experts to quickly extract information about the snow level, originating from a series of photos acquired by trail cameras. Using linked views, the domain experts can interactively explore and combine this information with other spatial and non-spatial measures, such as temperature or wind speed, to reveal the interplay of periglacial and aeolian processes. An abstracted interactive map of the area indicates the position of measurement spots to facilitate navigation. The design of the tool was made in tight collaboration with geographers, which resulted in an early prototype, tested in the pilot study. The following version of the tool and its usability has been evaluated in the user study with five domain experts and their feedback was incorporated into the final version, presented in this paper. This version was again discussed with two experts in an informal interview. Within these evaluations, they confirmed the significant benefit of the tool for their research tasks.

Many technologies have been used recently to enhance the tourism experience, and Augmented Reality (AR) has proven to be one of the more promising. This research study aims to use AR to enhance the tourism experience at heritage sites, and in particular to show that AR can provide a richer understanding of how historical artifacts were used. This research adopts an exploratory approach comprising: an exploratory survey;an exploratory interview study;interview study approach in Saudi Arabia;the design of a User Interface (UI);and an evaluation of user experience. The expected outcomes of this research are: conclusions drawn from the interview data;and secondly, a User Interface application for the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia.

In this work, we investigated the effect of map presentations and landmarks on wayfinding performance. We carried out an experiment in virtual reality, participants were asked to navigate inside a 3D environment to find targets shown on the maps. We studied two kinds of maps: Skymap, a world-scale, and world-aligned head-up map and a track-up bird's eye view map. Results showed that neither SkyMap nor landmarks did improve target finding performances. In fact, participants performed better with the track-up map.

We propose a transparent colored AR marker that allows 3D objects to be stacked in space. Conventional AR markers make it difficult to display multiple objects in the same position in space, or to manipulate the order or rotation of objects. The proposed transparent colored markers are designed to detect the order and rotation direction of each marker in the stack from the observed image, based on mathematical constraints. We describe these constraints to design markers, the implementation to detect its stacking order and rotation of each marker, and a proof-of-concept application Totem Poles. We also discuss the limitations of the current prototype and possible research directions.
