Shuttle buses have been a popular means to move commuters sharing similar origins and destinations during periods of high travel demand. However, planning and deploying reasonable, customized service bus systems becomes challenging when the commute demand is rather dynamic. It is difficult, if not impossible to form a reliable, unbiased estimation of user needs in such a case using traditional modeling methods. We propose a visual analytics approach to facilitating assessment of actual, varying travel demands and planning of night customized shuttle systems. A preliminary case study verifies the efficacy of our approach.

An Exploratory User Study of Visual Causality Analysis

Interactive visualization tools are being used by an increasing number of members of the general public;however, little is known about how, and how well, people use visualizations to infer causality. Adapted from the mediation causal model, we designed an analytic framework to systematically evaluate human performance, strategies, and pitfalls in a visual causal reasoning task. We recruited 24 participants and asked them to identify the mediators in a fictitious dataset using bar charts and scatter plots within our visualization interface. The results showed that the accuracy of their responses as to whether a variable is a mediator significantly decreased when a confounding variable directly influenced the variable being analyzed. Further analysis demonstrated how individual visualization exploration strategies and interfaces might influence reasoning performance. We also identified common strategies and pitfalls in their causal reasoning processes. design implications for how future visual analytics tools can be designed to better support causal inference are discussed.

Linking and Layout: Exploring the Integration of Text and visualization in Storytelling

Modern web technologies are enabling authors to create various forms of text visualization integration for storytelling. This integration may shape the stories' flow and thereby affect the reading experience. In this paper, we seek to understand two text visualization integration forms: (i) different text and visualization spatial arrangements (layout), namely, vertical and slideshow;and (ii) interactive linking of text and visualization (linking). Here, linking refers to a bidirectional interaction mode that explicitly highlights the explanatory visualization element when selecting narrative text and vice versa. Through a crowdsourced study with 180 participants, we measured the effect of layout and linking on the degree to which users engage with the story (user engagement), their understanding of the story content (comprehension), and their ability to recall the story information (recall). We found that participants performed significantly better in comprehension tasks with the slideshow layout. Participant recall was better with the slideshow layout under conditions with linking versus no linking. We also found that linking significantly increased user engagement. Additionally, linking and the slideshow layout were preferred by the participants. We also explored user reading behaviors with different conditions.

Grammar-based procedural animations for motion graphics

Motion graphics are a form of animation where several sets of shapes are choreographed together using a wide range of effects to produce compelling footage. We present a method to procedurally generate motion graphics. We formally model motion graphics with timeslice grammars, an extension of split and group grammars, that are able to control and manipulate both the temporal and spatial components of an animation. We are able to combine both these aspects by representing animations as sets of affine transformations sampled uniformly in both space and time. These transformations are controlled by the grammar. Shapes in our system are represented as highly tessellated polygons, and are animated by applying the affine transforms to each shape vertex given the vertex position and the animation time. We introduce a small set of operators showing how we can produce convincing animations, combining the expressive power of the grammar model, the composability of the operators with themselves, and the capabilities that derive from our shape representation. Throughout the paper, we show how timeslice grammars can, in few tens of seconds, produce a wide variety of animations that would take artists hours of tedious and time-consuming work. The visual analytics system HeatMosaic aims to reveal spatial-temporal patterns and uncertainty from a large dataset of crowdsourcing disaster damage reports. The system consists of real-time monitoring and aftermath analysis tools does not empower fast discovering adversity and damage patterns and reliable removal of uncertainty, but also provides just-in-time scanning and rewinding on damage reports. This paper summarises the system's design and architecture, followed by the data interpretation and insights gained by adopting the system.

Comparing many long time series is challenging to do by hand. Clustering time series enables data analysts to discover relevance between and anomalies among multiple time series. However, even after reasonable clustering, analysts have to scrutinize correlations between clusters or similarities within a cluster. We developed SAX Navigator, an interactive visualization tool, that allows users to hierarchically explore global patterns as well as individual observations across large collections of time series data. Our visualization provides a unique way to navigate time series that involves a "vocabulary of patterns" developed by using a dimensionality reduction technique, Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX). With SAX, the time series data clusters efficiently and is quicker to query at scale. We demonstrate the ability of SAX Navigator to analyze patterns in large time series data based on three case studies for an astronomy data set. We verify the usability of our system through a think-aloud study with an astronomy domain scientist.

This work describes a system and a user study for hiding and showing parts of the shared surrounding spaces in social AR applications for wearable devices. It extends previous work on the Social AR Continuum by exploring how sharing the surrounding environment can vary based on the social proximity between contacts. We built a prototype system for sharing the surrounding environment between two HoloLens devices. We found that Remove is the preferred hiding mechanism for the sharer in terms of social presence. We discuss the research findings and outline future directions for research in sharing surrounding spaces on social AR applications for wearable devices.

Recent advances in large-scale simulations have resulted in volume data of increasing size that stress the capabilities of off-the-shelf visualization tools. Users suffer from long data loading times, because large data must be read from disk into memory prior to rendering the first frame. In this work, we present a volume renderer that enables high-fidelity interactive visualization of large volumes on multi-core CPU architectures. Compared to existing CPU-based visualization frameworks, which take minutes or hours for data loading, our renderer allows users to get a data overview in seconds. Using a hierarchical representation of raw volumes and ray-guided streaming. we reduce the data loading time dramatically and improve the user's interactivity experience. We also examine system design choices with respect to performance and scalability. Specifically, we evaluate the hierarchy generation time, which has been ignored in most prior work, but which can become a significant bottleneck as data scales. Finally, we create a module on top of the OSPRay ray tracing framework that is ready to be integrated into general-purpose visualization frameworks such as Paraview.

Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) is often characterized by the inability to distinguish color due to a defective or missing cone in the eye. Although it is possible to modify the observed color to make it easier for users to distinguish, this can lead to color confusion with unaffected colors. To address this problem we investigate how flicker can assist distinguishing colors for CVD patients. In preliminary study, we evaluated the efficiency of color and brightness modulation with 4 participants with normal vision. Our findings suggests that while brightness modulation was ineffective, color modulation can help users distinguish between different colors.

Sound and light signal propagation have similar physical properties. This provides inspiration for creating an audio-visual echolocation system, where light is mapped to the sound signal, visually representing auralization of the virtual environment (VE). Some mammals navigate using echolocation;however humans are less successful with this. To the authors' knowledge, it remains to be seen if sound propagation and its visualization have been implemented in a perceptually pleasant way and is used for navigation purposes in the VE. Therefore, the core novelty of this research is navigation with visualized echolocation signal using a cognitive mental mapping activity in the VE.
