Although the mobility and emerging technology of augmented reality (AR) have brought significant entertainment and convenience in everyday life, the use of AR is becoming a social problem as the accidents caused by a shortage of situation awareness due to an immersion of AR are increasing. In this paper, we address the trade-off between immersion and situation awareness as the fundamental factor of the AR-related accidents. As a solution against the trade-off, we propose a third-party component that prevents pedestrian-vehicle accidents in a traffic environment based on vehicle position estimation (VPE) and vehicle position visualization (VPV). From a RGB image sequence, VPE efficiently estimates the relative 3D position between a user and a car using generated convolutional neural network (CNN) model with a region-of-interest based scheme. VPV shows the estimated car position as a dot using an out-of-view object visualization method to alert the user from possible collisions. The VPE experiment with 16 combinations of parameters showed that the InceptionV3 model, fine-tuned on activated images yields the best performance with a root mean squared error of 0.34 m in 2.1 ms. The user study of VPV showed the inversely proportional rela- tionship between the immersion controlled by the difficulty of the AR game and the frequency of situation awareness in both quantitatively and qualitatively. Additional VPV experiment assessing two out-of-view object visualization methods (EyeSee360 and Radar) showed no significant effect on the participants' activity, while EyeSee360 yielded faster responses and Radar engendered participants' preference on average. Our field study demonstrated an integration of VPE and VPV which has potentials for safety-ensured immersion when the proposed component is used for AR in daily uses. Constructing latent vector representation for nodes in a network through embedding models has shown its practicality in many graph analysis applications, such as node classification, clustering, and link prediction. However, despite the high efficiency and accuracy of learning an embedding model, people have little clue of what information about the original network is preserved in the embedding vectors. The abstractness of low-dimensional vector representation, stochastic nature of the construction process, and non-transparent hyper-parameters all obscure understanding of network embedding results. visualization techniques have been introduced to facilitate embedding vector inspection, usually by projecting the embedding space to a two-dimensional display. Although the existing visualization methods allow simple examination of the structure of embedding space, they cannot support in-depth exploration of the embedding vectors. In this paper, we design an exploratory visual analytics system that supports the comparative visual interpretation of embedding vectors at the cluster, instance, and structural levels. To be more specific, it facilitates comparison of what and how node metrics are preserved across different embedding models and investigation of relationships between node metrics and selected embedding vectors. Several case studies confirm the efficacy of our system. Experts' feedback suggests that our approach indeed helps them better embrace the understanding of network embedding models.

Most virtual reality (VR) applications require the user to travel through the virtual environment (VE). However, some users are susceptible to cybersickness, and this issue is particularly prominent if the user is physically stationary while virtually moving. One approach to minimizing cybersickness is to rotate the user in discrete steps. This poster presents a between-subjects study (n=42) comparing this approach to smooth virtual rotation. The results revealed a statistically significant increase in self-reported sickness after exposure to the VE in case of both conditions. No statistically significant differences between the two conditions were found.

Feature tracking is a method of time-varying data analysis. Due to the complexity of the underlying problem, different feature tracking algorithms have different levels of correctness in certain use cases. However, there is no efficient way to evaluate their performance on simulation data since there is no ground-truth easily obtainable. Synthetic data is a way to ensure a minimum level of correctness, though there are limits to their expressiveness when comparing the results to simulation data. To close this gap, we calculate a synthetic data set and use its results to extract a hypothesis about the algorithm performance that we can apply to simulation data.

Color interpolation is critical to many applications across a variety of domains, like color mapping or image processing. Due to the characteristics of the human visual system, color spaces whose distance measure is designed to mimic perceptual color differences tend to be non-Euclidean. In this setting, a generalization of established interpolation schemes is not trivial. This paper presents an approach to generalize linear interpolation to colors for color spaces equipped with an arbitrary non-Euclidean distance measure. It makes use of the fact that in Euclidean spaces, a straight line coincides with the shortest path between two points. Additionally, we provide an interactive implementation of our method for the CIELAB color space using the CIEDE2000 distance measure integrated into VTK and ParaView.

Virtual Reality (VR) has the potential to transform the way we work, rest and play. This promise comes with new challenges. One challenge sterns from the interactive nature of iminersive Virtual Environments (VEs). Placement. of contextual information in VEs can he critical to the user experience. This poster describes the use of eve-tracking to alleviate usability issues surrounding information presentation in immersive VEs. Results from our experiments show that integrating eye tracking into a VE to dictate where and when textual information is presented can improve performance when searching for contextual information. In summary, the results show improvement in task performance when the new direct method is employed to reveal information in target regions based on gaze. This seems to hold true independent of the VE or the type of information questioned.

Narrative visualizations engage audience in data stories, evoking emotions by using narrative patterns, rhetoric, visual design, and content among other strategies. How these elements combine to influence user experiences is complex and difficult to measure using empirical methods. This is partly due to the fact that narrative visualizations influence audiences affectively and implicitly [1]-[ 3]. evaluations of narrative visualizations that aim to better understand these mechanisms should capture this rich complexity by focusing on gathering descriptions of lived experience. Microphenomenology, a rigorous set of methods developed for soliciting descriptions of experiences, has empirically been shown to improve recollection of otherwise implicit aspects of experience [4]. Building on work using micro-phenomenological interviews to evaluate static visualizations [5], we apply these methods to interactive narrative visualizations. We conducted a small study to explore the potential of these methods in this context. Our findings reveal how narrative patterns and designs influence affective states, how they support various forms of exploratory analysis, and how they can facilitate or hinder non-analytical reflection such as the imagining of stories described within visualizations. These types of insights can inform future designs and help researchers understand how techniques employed in narrative visualizations influence users in specific and often implicit ways.

Malware frequently leaves periodic signals in network logs, but these signals are easily drowned out by non-malicious periodic network activity, such as software updates and other polling activity. This paper describes a novel algorithm based on Discrete Fourier Transforms capable of detecting multiple distinct period lengths in a given time series. We pair the output of this algorithm with aggregation summary tables that give users information scent about which detections are worth investigating based on the metadata of the log events rather than the periodic signal. A visualization of selected detections enables users to see all detected period lengths per entity, and compare detections between entities to check for coordinated activity. We evaluate our approach on real-world netflow and DNS data from a large organization, demonstrating how to successfully find malicious periodic activity in a large pool of noise and non-malicious periodic activity.

Experimenter bias and expectancy effects have been well studied in the social sciences and even in human-computer interaction. They refer to the nonideal study-design choices made by experimenters which can unfairly influence the outcomes of their studies. While these biases need to be considered when designing any empirical study, they can be particularly significant in the context of replication studies which can stray from the studies being replicated in only a few admissible ways. Although there are general guidelines for making valid, unbiased choices in each of the several steps in experimental design, making such choices when conducting replication studies has not been well explored. We reviewed 16 replication studies in information visualization published in four top venues between 2008 to present to characterize how the study designs of the replication studies differed from those of the studies they replicated. We present our characterization categories which include the prevalence of crowdsourcing, and the commonly-found replication types and study-design differences. We draw guidelines based on these categories towards helping researchers make meaningful and unbiased decisions when designing replication studies. Our paper presents the first steps in gaining a larger understanding of this topic and contributes to the ongoing efforts of encouraging researchers to conduct and publish more replication studies in information visualization.
