Experimenter bias and expectancy effects have been well studied in the social sciences and even in human-computer interaction. They refer to the nonideal study-design choices made by experimenters which can unfairly influence the outcomes of their studies. While these biases need to be considered when designing any empirical study, they can be particularly significant in the context of replication studies which can stray from the studies being replicated in only a few admissible ways. Although there are general guidelines for making valid, unbiased choices in each of the several steps in experimental design, making such choices when conducting replication studies has not been well explored. We reviewed 16 replication studies in information visualization published in four top venues between 2008 to present to characterize how the study designs of the replication studies differed from those of the studies they replicated. We present our characterization categories which include the prevalence of crowdsourcing, and the commonly-found replication types and study-design differences. We draw guidelines based on these categories towards helping researchers make meaningful and unbiased decisions when designing replication studies. Our paper presents the first steps in gaining a larger understanding of this topic and contributes to the ongoing efforts of encouraging researchers to conduct and publish more replication studies in information visualization.

evaluation of a visualization technique is complex and time-consuming. We present a system that aims at easing design, creation and execution of controlled experiments for visualizations in the web. We include of parameterizable visualization generation services, thus separating the visualization implementation from study design and execution. This enables experimenters to design and run multiple experiments on the same visualization service in parallel, replicate experiments, and compare different visualization services quickly. The system supports the range from simple questionnaires to visualization-specific interaction techniques as well as automated task generation based on dynamic sampling of parameter spaces. We feature two examples to demonstrate our service-based approach. One example demonstrates how a suite of successive experiments can be conducted, while the other example includes an extended replication study.

Hashtags and replies, originally introduced on Twitter, have become the most popular ways to tag short messages in social networks. While the primary uses of these human-labeled metadata are still for message retrieval and clustering, there have been increasing attempts to use them as subject or topic indicators in measuring people's continuous sentiments in large message corpora. However, conducting the analysis for large social media data is still challenging due to the message volume, heterogeneity, and temporal dependence. In this paper, we present TagNet, a novel visualization approach tailored to the tag-based sentiment analysis. TagNet combines traditional tag clouds with an improved node-link diagram to represent the time-varying heterogeneous information with reduced visual clutter. A force model is leveraged to generate layout aesthetics from which the temporal patterns of tags can be easily compared across different subsets of data. It is enhanced by visual encodings for quickly estimating the time-varying sentiment. Interaction tools are provided to improve the scalability for exploring large corpora. An example Twitter corpus illustrates the applicability and usefulness of TagNet.

Collaboration is an important application area for virtual reality (VR). However, unlike in the real world, collaboration in VR misses important empathetic cues that can make collaborators aware of each other's emotional states. Providing physiological feedback, such as heart rate or respiration rate, to users in VR has been shown to create a positive impact in single user environments. In this paper, through a rigorous mixed-factorial user experiment, we evaluated how providing heart rate feedback to collaborators influences their collaboration in three different environments requiring different kinds of collaboration. We have found that when provided with real-time heart rate feedback participants felt the presence of the collaborator more and felt that they understood their collaborator's emotional state more. Heart rate feedback also made participants feel more dominant when performing the task. We discuss the implication of this research for collaborative VR environments, provide design guidelines, and directions for future research.

Researchers such as sociologists create visualizations of multivariate node-link diagrams to present findings about the relationships in communities. Unfortunately, such visualizations can inadvertently expose the ostensibly private identities of the persons that make up the dataset. By purposely violating graph readability metrics for a small region of the graph, we conjecture that local, exposed privacy leaks may be perceptually masked from easy recognition. In particular, we consider three commonly known metrics-edge crossing, node clustering, and node-edge overlapping-as a strategy to hide leaks. We evaluate the effectiveness of violating these metrics by conducting a user study that measures subject performance at visually searching for and identifying a privacy leak. Results show that when more masking operations are applied, participants needed more time to locate the privacy leak, though exhaustive, brute force search can eventually find it. We suggest future directions on how perceptual masking can be a viable strategy, primarily where modifying the underlying network structure is unfeasible.

In this paper we present HeloVis: a 3D interactive visualization that relies on immersive properties to improve the user performance during SIGINT analysis. SIGINT, which stands for SIGnal INTelligence, is a field facing many challenges like huge amounts of data, complex data and novice users. HeloVis draws on perceptive biases, highlighted by Gestalt laws, and on depth perception to enhance the recurrence properties contained into the data and to abstract from interferences such as noise or missing data. In this paper, we first present SIGINT and the challenges that it brings to visual analytics. Then, we present the existing work that is currently used in or that fits the SIGINT context. Finally, we present HeloVis, an innovative application on an immersive context that allows performing SIGINT analysis and we present its evaluation performed with military operators who are the end-users of SIGINT analysis.

We present a taxonomy-driven approach to requirements specification in a large-scale project setting, drawing on our work to develop visualization dashboards for improving the quality of healthcare. Our aim is to overcome some of the limitations of the qualitative methods that are typically used for requirements analysis. When applied alone, methods like interviews fall short in identifying the full set of functionalities that a visualization system should support. We present a five-stage pipeline to structure user task elicitation and analysis around well-established taxonomic dimensions, and make the following contributions: (i) criteria for selecting dimensions from the large body of task taxonomies in the literature,, (ii) use of three particular dimensions (granularity, type cardinality and target) to create materials for a requirements analysis workshop with domain experts, (iii) a method for characterizing the task space that was produced by the experts in the workshop, (iv) a decision tree that partitions that space and maps it to visualization design alternatives, and (v) validating our approach by testing the decision tree against new tasks that collected through interviews with further domain experts.

In this paper, we introduce PhoenixMap, a visual analytics system to help analysts understand spatiotemporal distribution patterns and anomalies of many objects. It focuses on solving two VA challenges. First, visualizing the spatial distribution of many points under different categories especially when these points partially overlap with each other;Second, employing visual means to classify bird calls using deep learning CNN method. This PhoenixMap system can successfully help us understand the change and patterns of birds regions over many years.

Tukey emphasized decades ago that taking exploratory findings as confirmatory is "destructively foolish". We reframe recent conversations about the reliability of results from exploratory visual analytics-such as the multiple comparisons problem-in terms of Gelman and Loken's garden of forking paths to lay out a design space for addressing the forking paths problem in visual analytics. This design space encompasses existing approaches to address the forking paths problem (multiple comparison correction) as well as solutions that have not been applied to exploratory visual analytics (regularization). We also discuss how perceptual bias correction techniques may be used to correct biases induced in analysts' understanding of their data due to the forking paths problem, and outline how this problem can be cast as a threat to validity within Munzner's Nested Model of visualization design. Finally, we suggest paper review guidelines to encourage reviewers to consider the forking paths problem when evaluating future designs of visual analytics tools.

One of the most important properties that inherently defines a good colormap is perceptual order. In the literature, we find a wide range of recommendations and hypotheses regarding order. Properties such as monotonicity in luminance, saturation, or hue are/are not stated as necessary/sufficient to ensure perceptual order. In this paper, we gather the most common statements about perceptual order and, when possible, prove or disprove them.
