Trends are changes in variables or attributes over time, often represented by line plots or scatterplot variants, with time being one of the axes. Interpreting tendencies and estimating trends require observing the lines or points behavior regarding increments, decrements, or both (reversals) in the value of the observed variable. Previous work assessed variants of scatterplots like Animation, Small Multiples, and Overlaid Trails for comparing the effectiveness of trends representation using large and small displays and found differences between them. In this work, we study how best to enable the analyst to explore and perform temporal trend tasks with these same techniques in immersive virtual environments. We designed and conducted a user study based on the approaches followed by previous works regarding visualization and interaction techniques, as well as tasks for comparisons in three-dimensional settings. Results show that Overlaid Trails are the fastest overall, followed by Animation and Small Multiples, while accuracy is task-dependent. We also report results from interaction measures and questionnaires.

Current 3D product information pages are believed to enrich the online shopping experience since it provides a more immersive experience. However, existing solutions still retain the 2D UI elements in the product information design, preventing users from fully immersing themselves in the virtual environment and further degrading the shopping experience. Therefore, how to redesign the presentation of product information in a virtual environment is an essential challenge. In this work, we first construct a design space based on previous design cases of product information design in virtual environments, which contains three dimensions: visual presentation, user interaction and spatial relation. Then nine new 3D information design solutions are produced by combining elements in the design space. After that, we devised a user study to compare these solutions and investigate how different dimensions affect users' shopping experience and task efficiency of the primary objective in shopping. The results reveal that users' spatial memory and task efficiency are both impacted by how information is organized in terms of visual presentation dimension, and that users' hedonic experiences are influenced by the differences in the constituent elements of information. It is found that the different spatial relationship between 3D information and 3D product lead to differences in pragmatic quality.

Passwords remain the most widely used form of user authentication, despite advancements in other methods. However, their limitations, such as susceptibility to attacks, especially weak passwords defined by human users, are well-documented. The existence of weak human-defined passwords has led to repeated password leaks from websites, many of which are of large scale. While such password leaks are unfortunate security incidents, they provide security researchers and practitioners with good opportunities to learn valuable insights from such leaked passwords, in order to identify ways to improve password policies and other security controls on passwords. Researchers have proposed different data visualisation techniques to help analyse leaked passwords. However, many approaches rely solely on frequency analysis, with limited exploration of distance-based graphs. This paper reports PassViz, a novel method that combines the edit distance with the t-SNE (t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding) dimensionality reduction algorithm [19] for visualising and analysing leaked passwords in a 2-D space. We implemented PassViz as an easy-to-use command-line tool for visualising large-scale password databases, and also as a graphical user interface (GUI) to support interactive visual analytics of small password databases. Using the "000webhost" leaked database as an example, we show how PassViz can be used to visually analyse different aspects of leaked passwords and to facilitate the discovery of previously unknown password patterns. Overall, our approach empowers researchers and practitioners to gain valuable insights and improve password security through effective data visualisation and analysis.

We present a Spiral visualization that facilitates users to visually comprehend large graphs. Spiral visualization is a representation that highlights key aspects of networks, including the number, size, and density of communities, important or central nodes within communities, centrality distribution within communities, connections between communities, and connections between nodes. To facilitate analysis and comprehension of networks using various interaction techniques, such as zooming, tooltip, and highlight, we have implemented a Spiral visualization dashboard. We conducted a qualitative user study incorporating observation, think-aloud protocols, and participant rating of confidence and easiness to assess the usability and suitability of our visualization. The findings suggest that our visualization is appropriate for the network tasks evaluated. However, tasks requiring color comparison, such as identifying the densest community and comparing community densities were found to be more challenging to perform.

In this paper, we explore the effectiveness of tactile data encodings using swell paper in comparison to visual encodings displayed with SVGs for data perception tasks. By replicating and adapting Cleveland and McGill's graphical perception study for the tactile modality, we establish a novel tactile encoding hierarchy. In a study with 12 university students, we found that participants perceived visual encodings more accurately when comparing values, judging their ratios with lower cognitive load, and better self-evaluated performance than tactile encodings. However, tactile encodings differed from their visual counterparts in terms of how accurately values could be decoded from them. This suggests that data physicalizations will require different design guidance than that developed for visual encodings. By providing empirical evidence for the perceptual accuracy of tactile encodings, our work contributes to foundational research on forms of data representation that prioritize tactile perception such as tactile graphics.

Few concepts are as ubiquitous in computational fields as trust. However, in the case of information visualization, there are several unique and complex challenges, chief among them: defining and measuring trust. In this paper, we investigate the factors that influence trust in visualizations. We draw on the literature to identify five factors likely to affect trust: credibility, clarity, reliability, familiarity, and confidence. We then conduct two studies investigating these factors' relationship with visualization design features. In the first study, participants' credibility, understanding, and reliability ratings depended on the visualization design and its source. In the second study, we find these factors also align with subjective trust rankings. Our findings suggest that these five factors are important considerations for the design of trustworthy visualizations.

Extended reality (XR) devices, including augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, provide a deeply immersive experience. However, practical limitations like weight, heat, and comfort put extreme constraints on the performance, power consumption, and image quality of such systems. In this paper, we study how these constraints form the tradeoff between Fixed Foveated Rendering (FFR), GazeTracked Foveated Rendering (TFR), and conventional, non-foveated rendering. While existing papers have often studied these methods, we provide the first comprehensive study of their relative feasibility in practical systems with limited battery life and computational budget. We show that TFR with the added cost of the gaze-tracker can often be more expensive than FFR. Thus, we co-design a gaze-tracked foveated renderer considering its benefits in computation, power efficiency, and tradeoffs in image quality. We describe principled approximations for eye tracking which provide up to a 9x speedup in runtime performance with approximately a 20x improvement in energy efficiency when run on a mobile GPU. In isolation, these approximations appear to significantly degrade the gaze quality, but appropriate compensation in the visual pipeline can mitigate the loss. Overall, we show that with a highly optimized gaze-tracker, TFR is feasible compared to FFR, resulting in up to 1.25x faster frame times while also reducing total energy consumption by over 40%.

This paper describes the design of a dashboard and analysis pipeline to monitor users of visualization tools in the wild. Our pipeline describes how to extract analysis KPIs from extensive log event data and a mix of user types. The resulting three-page dashboard displays live KPIs, helping analysts to understand users, detect exploratory behaviors, plan education interventions, and improve tool features. We propose this case study as a motivation to use the dashboard approach for a more 'casual' monitoring of users and building carer mindsets for visualization tools.

In many jobs, workers execute precise line tracing tasks;welding, spray painting, or chiseling, for example. Training and support for such tasks can be done using VR and AR. However, to enable workers to achieve the required precision in movement and timing, the effect of visual guidance on continuous movement needs to be explored. In VR environments, we want to ensure people are trained so that the obtained skill is transferable to a real-world context, whereas, in AR, we want to ensure an ongoing task can be completed successfully when adding visual guidance. To simulate these various contexts, we employ a VR environment to investigate the effectiveness of different visualizations for motion-based guidance in a line tracing task. We tested five different visualizations, including faster and slower arrows on the pen, the same arrows on the line, a dynamic graph on the pen or line, and a ghost object to follow. Each visualization was tested with the same set of five lines of different target speeds (2 cm/s to 10 cm/s in steps of 2 cm/s) with a training line of 5 cm/s. Our results show that the example ghost on the line turns out to be the most efficient visualization for allowing users to achieve a specific speed. Users also perceived this visualization as the most engaging and easy to use. These findings have significant implications for the development of AR-based guidance systems, specifically in the realm of speed control, across diverse domains such as industrial applications, training, and entertainment.
