In this work I use a survey of senior visualization researchers and thinkers to ideate about the notion of progress in visualization research: how are we growing as a field, what are we building towards, and are our existing methods sufficient to get us there? My respondents discussed several potential challenges for visualization research in terms of knowledge formation: a lack of rigor in the methods used, a lack of applicability to actual communities of practice, and a lack of theoretical structures that incorporate everything that happens to people and to data both before and after the few seconds when a viewer looks at a value in a chart. Orienting the field around progress (if such a thing is even desirable, which is another point of contention) I believe will require drastic re-conceptions of what the field is, what it values, and how it is taught.

Asymmetric systems enable remote collaboration using multiple different devices. In this paper, we have designed an asymmetric system that enables collaboration between Augmented Reality (AR) and Laptop users. Remote collaboration systems often lack mutual emotional understanding between the collaborators. Researchers in virtual reality have used physiological data sharing as a way to increase social awareness between collaborators. No such effort was made in AR and in asymmetric domains. A key contribution of this work is that we have enabled physiological (heart rate) feedback sharing between the collaborators to generate more awareness about one another in an asymmetric system. We executed a user study with 20 participants where they performed a collaborative and a competitive task. Our results indicated that providing heart rate feedback is beneficial for AR devices. We noticed the experimental tasks had an effect on galvanic skin response although no such effect was found on heart rate signal.

We present MR-RIEW, a toolkit for virtual and mixed reality that provides researchers with a dynamic way to design an immersive experiment workflow including instructions, environments, sessions, trials and questionnaires. It is implemented in Unity via scriptable objects, allowing simple customisation. The graphic elements, the scenes and the questionnaires can be selected and associated without code. MR-RIEW can save locally into the headset and remotely the questionnaire's answers. MR-RIEW is connected to Google Firebase service for the remote solution requiring a minimal configuration.

This work explores the interaction between Augmented Reality (AR) and eye accommodation for airborne surveillance by simulating AR environments in Virtual Reality (VR). We simulate the AR display as displays with the capabilities needed for airborne surveillance are limited and because it would be hazardous to experiment directly on surveillance aircraft. While there is precedent for simulating AR in a VR environment, our study account for two of the physical and physiological aspects of AR: we factor in the focal plane of the AR technology and simulate the eye accommodation reflex of the user to provide focus. We ran a study with 24 participants examining AR cues to support visual search. We also compare the effects of having secondary tasks (that surveillance operators are normally responsible for) directly on the observation window using AR. Our results show that the effectiveness of the AR cues is dependent on the modality of the secondary task. We also found that, under certain situations, operators' performances for the search task are improved if the focal plane of the AR display is at the same distance as subsequent search targets.

Immersive training is a hot topic in areas like construction. However, most of the implemented use cases require external tools to allow interaction. This can lead to an immersive uprooting of user experience. In this paper we present a use case of immersive training using natural interfaces for interaction in construction, which has been tested by professionals working in construction of fiber networks and evaluated in terms of quality, presence and sickness to validate its impact on immersion.

Agents in VR have wide application like guidance. Most current agents are passive, so that people should suspend their current tasks and request agents with explicit demand. It is necessary to make agent more actively open the interaction naturally but without being bothering. We propose a virtual guidance agent which provide voice explanation in appropriate timing, using gaze tracking. attention amount estimation and attention driven state machine. We used time-decayed moving average of angle between gaze direction and face front direction. We implemented the method in VR and evaluated effectiveness in virtual guiding tour experimentally.

Appropriate evaluation and experimental design are fundamental for empirical sciences, particularly in data-driven fields. Due to the successes in computational modeling of languages, for instance, research outcomes are having an increasingly immediate impact on end users. As the gap in adoption by end users decreases, the need increases to ensure that tools and models developed by the research communities and practitioners are reliable, trustworthy, and supportive of the users in their goals. In this position paper, we focus on the issues of evaluating visual text analytics approaches. We take an interdisciplinary perspective from the visualization and natural language processing communities, as we argue that the design and validation of visual text analytics include concerns beyond computational or visual/interactive methods on their own. We identify four key groups of challenges for evaluating visual text analytics approaches (data ambiguity, experimental design, user trust, and "big picture" concerns) and provide suggestions for research opportunities from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Task abstractions and taxonomic structures for tasks are useful for designers of interactive data analysis approaches, serving as design targets and evaluation criteria alike. For individual data types, dataset-specific taxonomic structures capture unique data characteristics, while being generalizable across application domains. The creation of dataset-centric but domain-agnostic taxonomic structures is difficult, especially if best practices for a focused data type are still missing, observing experts is not feasible, and means for reflection and generalization are scarce. We discovered this need for methodological support when working with time-stamped event sequences, a datatype that has not yet been fully systematically studied in visualization research. To address this shortcoming, we present a methodology that enables researchers to abstract tasks and build dataset-centric taxonomic structures in five phases (data collection, coding, task categorization, task synthesis, and action-target-(criterion) crosscut). We validate the methodology by applying it to time-stamped event sequences and present a task typology that uses triples as a novel language of description for tasks: (1) action, (2) data target, and (3) data criterion. We further evaluate the descriptive power of the typology with a real-world case on cybersecurity.

Existing immersive systems for analysing geospatial data relating to ecosystem services are not designed for all groups involved with land use decision making. Land management scientists have different requirements compared to non-experts as the tasks they perform are different. Land use decision making needs better tools for assisting the analysis and exploration of land use decisions, and their effect on ecosystem services. In this research, a user centred design process is applied for developing and evaluating an immersive VR visualization tool to assist with better decision making around land use. Interviews with experts found issues with how their current tool presents analysis results, and problems with communicating their results to stakeholders. A literature review found no pre-existing immersive VR systems specifically for analysing tradeoffs among ecosystem services.

When a newsworthy event occurs, media articles that report on the event can vary widely-a concept known as coverage diversity. To help investigate coverage diversity in event reporting, we develop a visual analytics system called News Kaleidoscope. News Kaleidoscope combines several backend language processing techniques with a coordinated visualization interface. Notably, News Kaleidoscope is tailored for visualization non-experts, and adopts an analytic workflow based around subselection analysis, whereby second-level features of articles are extracted to provide a more detailed and nuanced analysis of coverage diversity. To robustly evaluate News Kaleidoscope, we conduct a trio of user studies. (1) A study with news experts assesses the insights promoted for our targeted journalism-savvy users. (2) A follow-up study with news novices assesses the overall system and the specific insights promoted for journalism-agnostic users. (3) Based on identified system limitations in these two studies, we refine News Kaleidoscope's design and conduct a third study to validate these improvements. Results indicate that, for both news novice and experts, News Kaleidoscope supports an effective, task-driven workflow for analyzing the diversity of news coverage about events, though journalism expertise has a significant influence on the user's insights and takeaways. Our insights developing and evaluating News Kaleidoscope can aid future tools that combine visualization with natural language processing to analyze coverage diversity in news event reporting.
