Surgical simulation increasingly appears to be an essential aspect of tomorrow's surgery. In this paper we present a preliminary work on virtual reality applied to liver surgery. The area of the liver, intra-hepatic arteries, veins, the portal vein and tumor have been extracted based on the seeded region growing algorithm. Then a realistic three-dimensional image was created, including the liver and the four internal vessels. After that, a user graphical interface was designed to interactively adjust the surgical resection planes. The surgical simulation platform was developed by providing a 3D visualization and virtual cutting system of liver based on personal computer. Our preliminary result shows that the visualization of liver and internal vessels and interactive modifications of the resection plane could present with a vivid profile.

The Urban toolkit: A Grammar-Based Framework for Urban Visual Analytics

While cities around the world are looking for smart ways to use new advances in data collection, management, and analysis to address their problems, the complex nature of urban issues and the overwhelming amount of available data have posed significant challenges in translating these efforts into actionable insights. In the past few years, urban visual analytics tools have significantly helped tackle these challenges. When analyzing a feature of interest, an urban expert must transform, integrate, and visualize different thematic (e.g., sunlight access, demographic) and physical (e.g., buildings, street networks) data layers, oftentimes across multiple spatial and temporal scales. However, integrating and analyzing these layers require expertise in different fields, increasing development time and effort. This makes the entire visual data exploration and system implementation difficult for programmers and also sets a high entry barrier for urban experts outside of computer science. With this in mind, in this paper, we present the Urban toolkit (UTK), a flexible and extensible visualization framework that enables the easy authoring of web-based visualizations through a new high-level grammar specifically built with common urban use cases in mind. In order to facilitate the integration and visualization of different urban data, we also propose the concept of knots to merge thematic and physical urban layers. We evaluate our approach through use cases and a series of interviews with experts and practitioners from different domains, including urban accessibility, urban planning, architecture, and climate science. The diversity and utility of cinematic volume rendering (CVR) for medical image visualisation have grown rapidly in recent years. At the same time, volume rendering on augmented and virtual reality systems is attracting greater interest with the advance of the WebXR standard. This paper introduces CVR extensions to the open-source visualisation toolkit (***) that supports WebXR. This paper also summarises two studies that were conducted to evaluate the speed and quality of various CVR techniques on a variety of medical data. This work is intended to provide the first open-source solution for CVR that can be used for in-browser rendering as well as for WebXR research and applications. This paper aims to help medical imaging researchers and developers make more informed decision when selecting CVR algorithms for their applications. Our software and this paper also provide a foundation for new research and product development at the intersection of medical imaging, web visualisation, XR and CVR.

Evaluating and representing intricate design, simulation, and process outcomes for organic geometries can present limitations on traditional computing devices (computers, phones, and tablets) and remains a formidable challenge. This deficit in recognizing critical manufacturability concerns may result in several design revisions and iterations. Virtual Reality (VR) presents a compelling alternative to conventional 3D environments, particularly when visualizing and analyzing complex organic geometries during the part design and manufacturing stages. Our work focuses on developing an immersive virtual environment (ImVR) to evaluate and visualize design and process parameters for additive manufacturing of complex shapes. We create visualization-centric designs that empower users to render surface and volume-based part models for design exploration to identify and evaluate Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) features. These visualization-centric designs emphasize and enhance the detection of these DfAM features through corresponding visualized part models or through color plots shown to highlight these features. Further, we optimize the build using a genetic algorithm to formulate the best build orientation tailored to DfAM features. We create all the visualization-centric models for the different build orientations found optimally to showcase the impact of optimizing one DfAM feature on other corresponding parameters. On the process side, we implement a Digital Twin to visualize, control, and modify parameters in an FDM 3D printing process. The digital twin model mimics the real-time operation of the 3D printer, showing the generated print layer-by-layer. Bayesian Network, a predictive modeling algorithm, provides the recommended parameters for modifying the printing process. These modifications pertain to optimizing the ultimate tensile strength of the part model by varying bed temperature, speed, and layer height. Two case studies on complex geometries - a Topol

With the ever-growing use of extended reality (XR) technologies, researchers seek to understand the factors leading to a higher quality of experience. Measurements of the quality of experience (e.g., presence, immersion, flow) are usually assessed through questionnaires completed after the experience. To cope with shortcomings and limitations of this kind of assessment, some recent studies tend to use physiological measures and interaction traces generated in the virtual world in replacement or in addition to questionnaires. Those physiological and behavioral measurements are still complex to implement, and existing studies difficult to replicate, because of a lack of easy and efficient tools to collect and visualize such data produced during XR experiments. In this paper, we present XREcho, a Unity package that allows for the recording, replaying and visualization of user behavior and interactions during XR sessions;recorded data allows to replay the whole experience, as it includes movements of the XR device, controllers and interacted objects, as well as eye tracking data (e.g., gaze position, pupils diameter). The capabilities of this tool are illustrated in a user study, where 12 participants' data have been collected and visualized with XREcho. Source code for XREcho is publicly available on GitHub.(1)

Modern rendering libraries provide unprecedented realism, producing real-time photorealistic 3D graphics on commodity hardware. Visual fidelity, however, comes at the cost of increased complexity and difficulty of usage, with many rendering parameters requiring a deep understanding of the pipeline. We propose EasyPBR as an alternative rendering library that strikes a balance between ease-of-use and visual quality. EasyPBR consists of a deferred renderer that implements recent state-of-the-art approaches in physically based rendering. It offers an easy-to-use Python and C++ interface that allows high-quality images to be created in only a few lines of code or directly through a graphical user interface. The user can choose between fully controlling the rendering pipeline or letting EasyPBR automatically infer the best parameters based on the current scene composition. The EasyPBR library can help the community to more easily leverage the power of current GPUs to create realistic images. These can then be used as synthetic data for deep learning or for creating animations for academic purposes.

Three dimensional wellbore feature of air drilling hole and its influence on bit side force

In existing drill string mechanics analysis, smooth and regular wellbore is assumed and makes the calculated results sometimes differ greatly from the actual situation. In this study, based on measured data, the well characteristics of air drilling are shown from static and dynamic aspects, which proves the irrationality of this assumption. A six-arm calliper logging tool was applied to measure the wellbore data, and a cubic spline function was firstly adopted to reconstruct the wellbore. Then a 3D dynamic visualization description of the wellbore was realized based on the visualization toolkit. The results indicate that the 3D dynamic wellbore view can intuitively describe the characteristics of a high ovality and notable axial irregularity of the cross section of the wellbore drilled with BHA with an air hammer (AH-BHA), while the wellbore drilled with a pre-bent pendulum bottom hole assembly(PBP-BHA) exhibits low ovality and a smooth and regular shape along the axial direction. This can explain why it is difficult to run casing in a hole section drilled with AH-BHA. The FEM calculation example shows that the regularity of wellbore has a great influence on the bit side force. The BHA, which generates a bit side force that would reduce wellbore deviation in regular wellbore, may even produce a bit side force that increases wellbore inclination in severely irregular wellbore, and can be used to reveal the deviation mechanism in the air/gas drilling process. Importantly, this result indicates that the assumption of irregular wellbore should sometimes be taken seriously in drill string mechanical analysis. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This paper presents DXR, a toolkit for building immersive data visualizations based on the Unity development platform. Over the past years, immersive data visualizations in augmented and virtual reality (AR, VR) have been emerging as a promising medium for data sense-making beyond the desktop. However, creating immersive visualizations remains challenging, and often require complex low-level programming and tedious manual encoding of data attributes to geometric and visual properties. These can hinder the iterative idea-to-prototype process, especially for developers without experience in 3D graphics, AR, and VR programming. With DXR. developers can efficiently specify visualization designs using a concise declarative visualization grammar inspired by Vega-Lite. DXR further provides a GUI for easy and quick edits and previews of visualization designs in-situ, i.e.. while immersed in the virtual world. DXR also provides reusable templates and customizable graphical marks, enabling unique and engaging visualizations. We demonstrate the flexibility of DXR through several examples spanning a wide range of applications.

From social media to smart traffic signals, digital records of the state of the world are being produced at unprecedented rates. These data may contain critical information regarding patterns of life or unfolding events, but the necessary pieces may be dispersed across multiple disparate sources. To make matters worse, the data produced is by nature massive, heterogeneous, and imperfect. To deal with this, current solutions typically analyze each data source within its own class. This reduces the problem's complexity but forfeits the potential benefits of discovering nuanced connections and details encompassing an entire situation. In order to exploit these potentially rich (but frequently one-sided) data sources, it is imperative that there exists an environment and supporting tooling that allows for the analysis of heterogeneous data sources within a combined view. This paper presents VAMD, a visual analytics system focused on dealing with large heterogeneous datasets. The design is supported with a use case focused around a disaster response scenario using a curated social media dataset featuring both text and accompanying images.

In this paper, we present a web-based system for visualization of flow simulation results in the vascular system for use with consumer-level hardware. The presented tool allows users to design, execute and visualize a flow simulation with a simple workflow on a desktop computer or a mobile device. The web interface allows users to select a vascular model, define the flow simulation parameters, execute the simulation, and interactively visualize the simulation results in real time using multiple visualization techniques. The server-side prepares the model for simulation and performs the simulation using SimVascular. To provide a more efficient transfer of the large amounts of simulation results to the web client, as well as reduce storage requirements on the server, we introduce a novel hybrid lossy compression method. The method uses an octree data subdivision approach combined with an iterative approach that regresses the data points to a B-Spline volume. The evaluation results show that our method achieves compression ratios of up to 5.7 for the tested examples at a given error rate, comparable to other approaches while specifically intended for visualization purposes.
