A surface-patch moment method approach is used to examine the electric field distribution in longitudinal slots that have small offsets from the host rectangular waveguide centreline. The problem of TE-mode radiation from a hanged parallel-plate waveguide is re-examined. The technique of the Fourier transform is used to represent the radiation field in a simple analytic series form. The series solution is compared with other results, thus clarifying the discrepancies between different numerical approaches. The analytic series solution is exact and more efficient than other existing numerical solutions.

The method of lines (MoL) is used to compute the frequency dependent propagation characteristics of planar waveguides with an inhomogeneous dielectric layer. To simulate unbounded regions, absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) are used. It is shown that in this case excellent results are achieved even if the boundaries are placed very close to the dielectric edge of the structure.

Design equations for the realisation of a reduced-size impedance transforming branchline coupler are presented together with the measured results of a fabricated prototype GaAs MMIC coupler using coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission lines. The coupler which is less than 25% of the area of the standard branchline coupler has low coupling imbalance, with good return losses, and excellent isolation.

Embedded metal-semiconductor-metal photodectors have been fabricated by grafting a 250 nm thick GaAs layer within the core of glass channel waveguides. Using this new configuration, edge, rather than vertical, coupling is achieved resulting in a substantial increase in the absorption coefficient and providing a protective layer for the detector. Absorption coefficients of 37.8 cm-1 and responsivities of 0.06 A/W for 50-mu-m long detectors have been measured at lambda = 633 nm.

The first modelocked Er: Ti: LiNbO3-waveguide laser with intracavity phase modulator as the mode locker is reported. The laser was pumped at lambda(p) congruent-to 1480 nm, (E(p) parallel-to c) and the phase modulator was driven sinusoidally at 1.441 GHz (axial mode spacing of the 48 mm long cavity). Modelocked pulses at lambda(s) congruent-to 1532 nm (pi-polarised) with more than 1.5 mW peak power were generated. The observed pulse width (95 ps FWHM) at 1.6 times the threshold pump power (approximately 40 mW coupled) and 30.5 dBm RF-drive power were limited by the detector bandwidth (approximately 6 GHz).
