The equivalent network of arbitrarily shaped multiple-inductive posts in a rectangular waveguide was analysed by the 3-D method of lines with nonequidistant discretisation, and numerical results for both a cylindrical single post and triple post were given as examples. The results are in agreement with the published data 1.2, which show the reliability and precision of the present method.

We propose a new type of two-dimensional photonic crystal power dividers based on ring resonators and directional couplers that can be applicable to photonic integrated circuits. The proposed power divider's mechanism is analogous to that of conventional waveguide directional couplers, utilizing coupling between guided modes supported by line defect waveguides. Based on the calculated position, a photonic crystal power divider is designed and verified by finite-difference time-domain computation. With low-loss bends based on ring resonators, a total transmission up to 99% is achieved. Different output power levels are achieved by changing the coupling length. A simple and versatile 2-D mode-tapering method for a channel waveguide, which is based on tapered waveguide segmentation, is proposed. The taper can be incorporated into the waveguide at the stage of lateral channel definition. The method is compatible with both mask photolithography and direct writing techniques, and no modification of the transverse index profile is required.

The efficiency of surface emitting second harmonic generators can be significantly increased by resonating the second harmonic field in a vertical cavity structure. These resonant devices can be several orders of magnitude more efficient than similar nonresonant devices. Milliwatt visible outputs can be expected for tens of milliwatts of infra-red input in a doubly resonant structure for reasonable device parameters.

A hybrid integration concept has been investigated which combines the advantages of ultra-low loss silica waveguides and low power consumption polymer thermo-optic switches. A 1x2 vertical coupler type switch (VCS) has been realised. Preliminary results exhibited a crosstalk of < -23dB, an insertion loss of 3.5dB (at 1550 nm) and a switching power of < 80mW.

Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles exhibit broad optical resonances that have been assigned to so-called localized surface plasmons (LSPs). The resonance's energy varies with particle shape in a similar fashion as is well known for LSPs in gold and silver nanoparticles, but the line-shape is always anomalously asymmetric. We here show that this effect is due to an intrinsic Fano interference caused by the coupling between the plasmon response and a structureless background originating from interband transitions. The conclusions are supported by experimental and numerical simulation data of Pd particles of different shape and phenomenologically analyzed in terms of the point dipole polarizability of spheroids. The latter analysis indicates that the degree of Fano asymmetry is simply linearly proportional to the imaginary part of the interband contribution to the metal dielectric function.

Two new coplanar waveguide to rectangular waveguide couplers with coupling through a post and a slot are experimentally demonstrated. The couplers operate over the K(u)-band transmission and X-band reception frequencies that are designated for satellite communications. The measured insertion loss and return loss are about 1 dB and 10 dB, respectively, for both couplers.
