Second and third order optical processes in anisotropic polymer waveguides

Second harmonic generation and linear optical properties of thin layers and optical wave-guides prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett-technique or spin-coating/corona poling from new maleic acid anhydride (MAA) polymers carrying NLO chromophores in the side chain, from polymethylmethacrylate/disperse red host-guest systems and from 2-docosylamino-5-nitropyridine (DCANP) amphiphiles have been studied. We found that high-quality wave-guides with high non-linear optical coefficients can be prepared from all of these materials either by LB or by spin-coating/corona poling. We reached phase matching for special wave guide structures. By computer simulation we evaluated the intensity distribution within wave-guide for the fundamental, second and third harmonic wave based on "coupled amplitude equations".

Gain and carrier temperature response of semiconductor laser media to short optical pulses

The gain and carrier temperature response of semiconductor laser media to picosecond optical pulses with various pulse energies is obtained by means of a model that is based on rate equations extended to include the carrier energy density equation. The temperature dynamics are obtained from the carrier energy density by use of a quasi-equilibrium Fermi-Dirac distribution. We study the cases of media whose prepulse states are strongly absorbing, transparent, and strongly amplifying at the frequency of the pulse. The results show that the various physical processes that influence the gain and carrier temperature contribute differently, depending on both the initial state of the medium and the pulse energy. In particular, the influence of free-carrier absorption and two-photon absorption on the dynamics of the carrier temperature and the gain coefficient is discussed in detail. Thermo-optic vertical coupler switches using hybrid polymer/silica integration technology

A hybrid integration concept has been investigated which combines the advantages of ultra-low loss silica waveguides and low power consumption polymer thermo-optic switches. A 1x2 vertical coupler type switch (VCS) has been realised. Preliminary results exhibited a crosstalk of < -23dB, an insertion loss of 3.5dB (at 1550 nm) and a switching power of < 80mW.

This study is to present the determination of the acoustic properties of sound sources actively controlled in a square duct. Therefore, the measurement of sound source reflection coefficient using transfer function technique, the related prediction on sound source impedance and the comparison of the predicted source impedance as described with that of the measurement by using Helmholtz resonator technique are all included in this study. The result of this study, clearly shows that the reflection coefficient of sound source is very dependent on the acoustic frequency involved, and the predicted source impedance by using transfer function method agrees fairly well with that measured by using Helmholtz resonator method. Photorefractive charge compensation in α-phase proton-exchanged LiNbO₃ waveguides

Photorefractive recording and light and dark erasures have been measured in unannealed alpha-phase proton-exchanged LiNbO3 waveguides. The saturation index change, Delta n(s) congruent to 9 x 10(-6), is independent of the light intensity within the studied range, 0.3-50 W/cm(2). The time dependencies are well represented by the sum of two exponential components. After complete optical erasure, diffraction efficiency eta increases in the dark (i.e., dark developing) up to similar to 17% of the saturation value eta(s) congruent to 0.12 and then decays to zero in similar to 4 h. All experimental results are reasonably well simulated by a model in which the Fe2+/Fe3+ light-induced charge distribution is compensated for by a light-insensitive species (ionic charges or holes) that is mobile at room temperature. The problem of molecular fluorescence in the vicinity of a gradient-index medium is studied theoretically through classical modeling of a radiating dipole. A previously developed formulation involving the Green dyadic for an inhomogeneous medium is applied to the present problem. Normalized lifetimes for the admolecules are calculated and compared with those for a homogeneous medium.
