Inset dielectric guide mounting of a detector diode

Inset dielectric guide (IDG) is an alternative to dielectric guides such as image or insular guides for millimeter-wave and antenna applications. A simple detector diode mount is examined, and its performance in IDG is compared to that achieved when the same diode is mounted in a rectangular metal waveguide. The performance in IDG is good, although it is a little worse than in the waveguide due to some radiation from the diode mount.

The problem of determining dielectric permittivity of a planar waveguide surrounded by ideally conducting surfaces in terms of an arbitrary number of TE-mode phase velocities specified at fixed frequencies is solved. Investigation of the waveguide in the transverse cross section is equivalent to the investigation of a segment of nonuniform transmission line with a determinant wave impedance. The problem of synthesizing a waveguide is reduced to the known problem of synthesizing a short-circuited line based on a determinant input impedance.

A version of the direct projection method of the Galerkin method type, which led to a boundary-value problem at the eigenvalues for a system of ordinary differential equations, is used to calculate the natural waves of a periodic planar corrugated dielectric dielectric waveguide. The numerical results of a calculation of the dispersion curves of a waveguide with a two-sided sawtooth corrugation are given.

Analysis of waveguides with dielectric inserts

A unified method for analyzing complex microwave systems which involve different guiding structures is presented. The method depends on applying the equivalence principle to replace the dielectric insert by electric and magnetic surface currents. The field excited by these currents is then expanded with respect to the eigenmodes of the corresponding empty waveguide. The yet unknown electric and magnetic surface currents are expanded with respect to properly chosen basis functions, and the continuity of the field across the air-dielectric interface(s) is tested by the same functions. The validity of the method is checked by analyzing a simple dielectric-slab-loaded rectangular waveguide. The method is then applied to the analysis of more complicated structures, e.g., shielded dielectric image guide and shielded dielectric rod guide.

Solid and hollow waveguides have been employed for spectroscopic and radiometric measurements. Hollow sapphire guides, with a transmission window from 10-17 μm, are are used to detect 20% CO2 in N2. Hollow silica waveguides, with a transmission window from 7-9 μm, are utilized for detecting 100% methane and also for lo temperature radiometric measurements from 30°C to 150°C. The spectroscopic analysis was accomplished by passing the gas down the interior of the hollow guide for an extended pathlength absorption. The hollow silica guide measured the low temperature region with a minimum resolvable temperature difference of less than 1°C.

The nonradiative dielectric waveguide (NRD-guide) is a dielectric waveguide which normally is composed of low-permittivity dielectric materials;but, if high-permittivity materials are used, then the circuit size may be reduced. However, when high-permittivity materials are used, then single-mode transmission becomes impossible and some unpredictable phenomena are observed which have never been observed in a low-permittivity waveguide. In this paper, transmission characteristics of the high-permittivity nonradiative dielectric waveguide are studied theoretically as well as experimentally. Assuming that the presence of small air gaps between the dielectric strip and metal plates of the NRD-guide, which cannot be avoided in practice, is the origin of these phenomena, the analysis has been performed which shows that a serious effect occurs even for extremely small gaps and the bandwidth of single-mode transmission becomes very small. Ultimately, this makes the single-mode transmission impossible. The electromagnetic field distribution in the NRD-guide is also calculated and the curious phenomena are interpreted physically. Moreover, a trapped insular NRD-guide is proposed which permits single-mode transmission even if high-permittivity material is used. An experimental confirmation is made of the usefulness of this new type of NRD-guide.

Investigation of dielectric waveguides based on compound materials

To obtain optimum parameters (Ε 5 with tgσ-3) for dielectric waveguides (DW), easy to manufacture polymeric composite materials (PCM) used to fabricate dielectric waveguides by die stamping are innestigated. Nonpolor polymer - polyethylene and refined thermoresistive fillers were utilized for preparation of PCM. The results of investigation have shown that DW on PCM meet all the reguirements of electrodynamic radiowave elements and can be successfully applied to SWF integral circuites.
