Integrated photonics is a remarkable platform for scalable classical and quantum light-based information processing. However, polarization manipulation on a chip despite of its fundamental significance in information processing remains elusive. Polarization manipulation capabilities have been recently demonstrated in femtosecond laser-inscribed twisted waveguides, although the systematic theoretical description of polarization manipulation has not been established for this architecture. In this paper we develop a rigorous theory of a twisted waveguide unveiling its eigenmodes and transmission matrix in the closed form. Utilizing the developed theory, we demonstrate that twisted waveguides can realize virtually arbitrary polarization transformations while satisfying reasonable design constraints. This fact combined with low cost and ease of prototyping of laser inscribed photonic integrated circuits allows us to suggest twisted waveguide as a robust building block for on-chip polarization-encoded information processing.

We have studied the optical properties of channel waveguides written using a femtosecond laser in tellurite-zinc glasses doped with metallic silver (%TeO2%ZnO:Ag). Our findings showed that the tellurium dioxide glasses could be significantly affected by the silver presence, even with low silver concentration. By properly choosing the parameters and glassy matrix the written waveguides presented lower optical insertion losses and greater refractive index change.

Integrating both dielectric and plasmonic waveguides on the same chip is needed for the future of the integration of nanoplasmonic circuits. Different coupling methods have been proposed between those two types of waveguides without taking into consideration the effect of sandwiching the metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) plasmonic waveguide between the two conventional dielectric waveguides (CDWs). In this research work, using the finite-difference-time-domain method, we numerically analyze the effect of increasing the length of the sandwiched MDM plasmonic waveguide on the extracted light into the output CDW. We found that embedding the MDM plasmonic waveguide between two CDWs causes a reduction in the width of the spectrum response due to the FP cavity-like response compared to that without sandwiching the MDM plasmonic waveguide. We also investigated the effect of changing various parameters of the design dimensions on the spectrum response of our proposed design. Our results indicate potential applications of the proposed design in the integration of ultra-compact nanoplasmonic circuits.
