Attitudes of distance education students towards web based learning – a case study

The aim of this study is to assess the resistance level, which is taken as a dimension of attitude, of distance education students towards web based learning and to present the relationship of resistance level with age, gender, program and grade level. In the study, the sample includes 432 students from Gazi University Distance Education Vocational School. T-test results for resistance level according to the independent variables; age, gender, program and grade have been presented. Subsequently, implications based on related literature and the results of analysis have been listed. Finally, suggestions for future research have been discussed.

E-learning has been growing exponentially in the past few years due to the advent of MOOCs. But the collaborative modes of study, which are complimentary to the online learning experience, are still in its infant stage. In this paper, we propose a framework for collaborative mode of learning using online group study, which can complement the existing methods for collaboration and interaction such as forums and meetups in MOOCs. This framework can be seamlessly integrated with MOOCs and students can create small groups and share their ideas to work collaboratively like as if they do in a physical group study that students often conduct just before their exams, among their classmates. Here, we also present comparative study of features of the existing collaboration tools to analyze the suitable features for improved collaboration in E-learning platforms. We have also included the specifications of the proposed framework that we developed and integrated with the Open edX platform to measure the effectiveness of group study in a private instance of MOOC.

In this paper, the study on generating temporal learning of relations between concepts is proposed. The purpose of the proposed study is to annotate a relation between concepts with semantic, temporal, concise, and structured information, which can release the cognitive burden of learning relations between concepts for users. The temporal annotations can help users to learn and understand the unfamiliar or new emerged relations between concepts. A general method is proposed to generate temporal learning of a relation between concepts by constructing its relation words, relation sentences, relation graph, and relation factor. Empirical experiments on movie star dataset show that the proposed algorithm is effective and accurate.

Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is a combination of mobile computing and cloud computing. It is relatively a new concept used in industry and in education sector for future development. The main advantage of cloud computing is that it reduces the cost for the implementation of software and hardware. Cloud computing overcomes various obstacles and challenges related to mobile computing. MCC provides data processing and storage services to mobile users in clouds and all complex computing modules are also managed in the clouds without any powerful configuration. This paper focuses on education technology by presenting various models for mobile learning, cloud based and web based learning. By using MCC, one can improve the quality of education system at a reasonable cost.

Appropriately designed web based learning materials are thought to be more efficient than traditional ones because of interactivity and multimedia, which enable clear explanations, motivating design, active learning, instant feedback and other advantages. Our research question is whether students achieve better learning results if they learn from web based learning materials than from traditional ones. Although the research results show that students spent less time learning from traditional learning materials than students learning from web based learning materials, the differences of learning times were not significant. However, we proved significant differences in terms of gained knowledge. The students using web based learning materials performed significantly better than students using traditional learning materials.

Secondary Education Teachers’ training needs towards web based collaborative learning in TRNC

The aim of this study is to investigate the teacher's education needs towards collaborative learning. The sample of the study consists of 200 teacher from Secondary and High Schools in North Cyprus. “web based collaborative learning” questionnaire developed by Ozdamli & Bicen (2009) was used to collect data. The first phase of the questionnaire involves 9 demographic questions and second phase involves 20 likert type statements. The result of the study show that the high school teachers in TRNC need to be educated about creating videos, blogging pages, publishing their own studies, applying web based education applications, and using wikis in their courses. Ministry of Education should give in-service training to teachers considering these needs.

An intelligent subtopics suggester for an e-learning system

Elearning, is a planned teaching or learning experience that uses a wide spectrum of computerbased technologies to reach learners. The focus of this project was the case where students are logging into and using the system independently of other students and staff members. This fits firmly into the general definition of the asynchronous e-learning environment, where the instructor develops content and the students access it online. The instructor also suggests content to students with specific needs, to do this, current systems use face-to-face discussions, online discussions or emails. Because of the increased number of students involved in elearning this individualized attention to students’ needs has become untenable and unsustainable hence the need for an Intelligent Subtopics Suggester. The model lacks, from a literature point of view. This research aimed at addressing this gap through design of an Intelligent Subtopics Suggester model. This project developed an Intelligent Subtopics Suggester model that is appended to an elearning system and that analyzes the user’s questions and suggests help subtopics to the lecturer/tutor. The intelligent model was based on a knowledge base that was made using knowledge from domain experts. The knowledge base captured the keywords and terminologies that describe a subtopic of interest. These keywords and terminologies were matched against the keywords in the students’ question. This helped to identify the students’ key learning needs, by identifying the subtopics learners have not understood well, based on the frequency that a question is asked from a given subtopic. based on the above model a prototype was developed, the prototype has 6 production rules for inference and 1505 facts (keywords) in its knowledge base. The Intelligent Subtopic Suggester was able to identify the topics from which questions had been asked. The main focus of this article is online education, or commonly referred to as e-learning activities and the high potential that partnerships between organizations and academia can bring. Online learning is revolutionizing the world. Since its introduction, the educational system has been evolving rapidly. E-leaning has several benefits when it comes to both organizations and universities. There is an increase in utilizing e-learning as a tool not only in academia but also in organizations or corporations. What we would like to propose and elaborate in the following article is the advantage that both organizations and academia will have if the number of partnerships would increase in producing online training and establishing the level of existing collaboration or competition in the online courses industry.
