Data-intensive web-based information systems usually employ database systems to store the contents forming the basis for web page construction. Generating web pages on the fly, especially in peak times, can lead to severe performance problems. Thus, pre-generation of web pages has been suggested to be ready for prime time, allowing to reliably deliver several hundred pre-generated pages per second. Maintaining the consistency of these web pages with respect to changes within the database in an efficient way, however, represents a major challenge. This paper presents a novel approach for "self-maintaining" web pages that is, different to previous approaches, characterized by a simple (and thus, easy to maintain) database-to-web page mapping and very low page re-generation costs. This is achieved by utilizing fragmentation techniques from distributed databases, by allocating parameterized fragment classes to web page classes (rather than individual fragments to single web pages), and using the Extensible Markup Language (XML) as an intermediate layer between the database and the final web pages. Recent advances in the development of new, high throughput screening technologies have resulted in a wealth of life science data. The complexity and volume of these data require technology beyond that of traditional database systems. Open research issues include the seamless, semantic-based integration of geographically distributed, autonomous web databases. Biological And Chemical Integration Information System (BACIIS) addresses these issues. This paper discusses the challenges associated with the integration of life science web databases and the techniques used in BACIIS to address these challenges. Particularly, the execution of life science, multidatabase queries is investigated, and an approach that can overcome the limitations of the query capabilities of each individual life science web database participating in the integration is presented. This approach hides the heterogeneity of the individual databases from the user while providing an efficient execution plan for complex, life science, multidatabase queries.

Data files available on web server contain very often various data formats linked into a composition producing sequence presented frame by frame as a Movie. The multimedia database design Methods have to consider many rides that Must be integrated to obtain standards for simplifying development of the application and for fast exploration of the product. The paper presents several aspects of design techniques giving a unified composition, modularity of the application and navigation standards within the product. The database is accessed in a remote server of the computer network.

Given the undeniable popularity of the web, providing efficient and secure access to remote databases using a web browser is crucial for the emerging cooperative information systems and applications. In this paper, we evaluate all currently available Java-based approaches that support persistent connections between web clients and database servers. These approaches include Java applets, Java Sockets, Servlets, Remote Method Invocation, CORBA, and mobile agents technology. Our comparison is along the dimensions of performance and programmability. Our findings point out that best performance is not always achievable with high programmability and low resource requirements. Moreover, the mobile agent technology needs to improve its programmability while giving particular emphasis on its infrastructure.

In this, paper we investigate various aspects of representing multidimensional information in the frame of the WWW. Multidimensional XML (MXML) is an extension of XML suitable for representing data that assume different facets, having different value or different structure, under different contexts. In Multidimensional XML, elements and attributes may depend on a number of dimensions, that define worlds under which variants of those elements or attributes hold. Moreover, we propose an extension of DTD that takes dimensions into account and is suitable for describing the logical structure of MXML documents. We-also present a graph data model for MXML, and show how MXML can be reduced to conventional XML for a given world.

The purpose of this research is to create object oriented, validated modeling methods and software tools, as well as a system architecture that enables enterprises to analyze and design all critical aspects of their demanufacturing processes over the web, manage their disassembly lines and provide electronic support systems for operators. The generic methodology developed focuses on all critical objects in the above listed disciplines, including their process parameters and their interactions with the relevant networked (web) databases. Furthermore, it integrates various process inputs, acting at different priorities from several different sources, including the web, constraints under which the processes must fire, and resources, that the processes must use in order to be able to produce outputs that represent value. Our method follows an open systems architecture that enables "third party" processes to be integrated into, and/or to interact with. By following internationally accepted total quality and environmental standards, important rules learned can be fed back to the product/ process design team, as well as to all support systems and personnel, most importantly to the multi-lifecycle engineering design, manufacturing/ assembly planning and quality teams.
