Ontology-Assisted and Autonomic Testing Verified Model for Automated and Reliable web development

This paper proposed a web engineering architecture based on three main phenomena called Structured development, high reliability, and multi-level flexibility. The ontology is formed and mapped to generate a structured and user-assisted design. The user requirements are captured in this model based on an ontology map. web engineering is applied to capture the various elements of web development including the functional features. In the development phase, the captured inputs and features are processed for designing the static and active web pages. The functional interconnectivity, validations, and security are integrated for all pages. The second important aspect of high reliability is achieved by managing the control level validations, BlackBox testing, cookies control, and session tracking. Multi-level flexibility is achieved at each level of this model including requirement gathering, ontology formation, webpage development, control validations, and testing. The XML files are generated at different levels to manage and control user responses. The proposed model is verified on seven case studies and the analysis is done in terms of design time and the number of cycles required for finalizing the website. The qualitative evaluation of the proposed model is done against 11 existing web designing tools. The project development is accomplished from 15 to 70 s based on the project size. The number of change cycles of different projects lies between 4 and 12. The analytical study identified that the proposed model is effective and reliable enough against template support, requirement gathering, customization, control validation, testing, and security.

web development is a data-centric field and fundamental component of data science. The advent of big data analytics has significantly transformed the processes, knowledge domains, and competencies associated with web development. Accordingly, educational programs must adjust to contemporary advancements by initially determining the abilities required for big data web developers to satisfy industry demands and adhere to current trends. This study aims to identify the knowledge areas and abilities essential for big data analytics and to create a taxonomy by correlating these competences with currently popular tools in web development. A mixed method consisting of semi-automatic and clustering methods is proposed for the semantic analysis of the text content of online job advertisements associated with the development of big data web applications. This methodology uses Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a probabilistic topic modeling tool, to uncover hidden semantic structures within a precisely specified textual corpus and average linkage hierarchical clustering as a clustering analysis technique for web developers. The results of this study are a web development competency map which is expected to help evaluate and improve the knowledge, qualifications and skills of IT professionals being hired. It helps to identify the roles and competencies of professionals in the company's personnel recruitment process;and meet industry skill requirements through web development education programs. The competency map consists of knowledge domains, skills and essential tools for web development such as basic knowledge, frameworks, design and user experience, database design, web development, cloud computing and other soft skills. Furthermore, the proposed model can be extended to several types of jobs in the IT sector.

The Potential of Serverless Edge-powered Islands for web development

web developers face two significant challenges when developing their applications and websites: latency and payload size. Given that web services rely on servers, the related communication incurs a cost in terms of latency. In contrast, the payload passed to the client incurs a communication cost, not to mention the computational cost to the client. The concept of serverless edge computing, built on top of content delivery networks (CDNs), is an approach that has begun to gain the attention of web developers for its promise of lower latencies due to its efficiencies in communication thanks to globally distributed networks and replication. Islands architecture is a technical approach that addresses payload size by giving developers easy ways to defer and potentially even avoid the cost of loading content. Combined, these two approaches form edge-powered islands and, in this article, we examine how the combination can help to address these two notable costs web developers have to consider in their daily work. Our findings indicate that edge-powered islands can provide a way to introduce interactivity to otherwise static websites while wrapping dynamic portions of a page within islands to gain the benefits of static approaches in more dynamic contexts, such as storefronts. In addition, islands can provide loading benefits even for more application-like websites, such as social networks, and give web developers an additional control layer in their development work.

This study evaluates the security of web application code generated by Large Language Models, analyzing 2,500 GPT-4 generated PHP websites. These were deployed in Docker containers and tested for vulnerabilities using a hybrid approach of Burp Suite active scanning, static analysis, and manual review. Our investigation focuses on identifying Insecure File Upload, SQL Injection, Stored XSS, and Reflected XSS in GPT-4 generated PHP code. This analysis highlights potential security risks and the implications of deploying such code in real-world scenarios. Overall, our analysis found 2,440 vulnerable parameters. According to Burp's Scan, 11.56% of the sites can be straight out compromised. Adding static scan results, 26% had at least one vulnerability that can be exploited through web interaction. Certain coding scenarios, like file upload functionality, are insecure 78% of the time, underscoring significant risks to software safety and security. The main contribution of our research is the creation of a methodology, that allows benchmarking LLMs for deployable PHP code generation, where the investigated property is secure code generation. We have made the source codes and a detailed vulnerability record for each GPT-4 generated sample publicly available to support further research: https://***/Beckyntosh/ChatPHP. This study emphasizes the crucial need for thorough testing and evaluation if generative AI technologies are used in software development.

As technology advances, the size of websites has increased due to factors such as the advanced systems used and the intensive use of visuals. Consequently, the amount of carbon emissions caused by the data of these websites has also increased. Considering that a significant portion of the world's population are now internet users, substantial amounts of carbon emissions are produced daily due to internet sites alone. This paper aims to estimate the carbon emissions produced by transferring bytes of data on the internet using Sustainable web Design (SWD) and 1byte digital emission estimation models, and propose methods to reduce these emissions.

Online course in web development: the case of Chinese universities

The paper investigates the effect of introducing a course in web development for Chinese students on their academic achievements and the basic competencies, using traditional and online approaches. For the experimental learning purposes, 300 students were selected from three universities located in China's largest cities: Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin. A course in web development was designed and implemented to achieve the research objectives. The study results showed that the difference in the learning outcomes of the two groups was insignificant and did not depend on the training format. Online learners had more feedback and were able to take lectures and practical training more quickly. Further research requires quantifying and comparing the effects of online learning in programming instruction using the instrumental variable method and structural equation modeling to reveal the causal relationship between the two. The study can be useful to developers of training programs to create both traditional and online courses because the data obtained during this research can improve the effectiveness of the new course.

The advent of widely-accessible generative AI tools and their rapid adoption across industry and education is necessitating large-scale revisions to user experience design and web development pedagogies and curricula, a process that will take some time. This report describes a series of initial experiments using generative AI tools as a student or junior designer or web developer might, sometimes naively and sometimes in more sophisticated ways, to complete beginner-level and advanced projects. The report evaluates how ChatGPT performs across three categories of prompts (brainstorming, design, and coding) and assesses the quality of the outputs in order to inform the research design of a larger, ongoing interdisciplinary study in its initial phases and to document the results for instructors or senior members of design and development teams to aid them in assessing the fitness of generative AI for user experience design and web development production.

In an era of growing digitization, technology is essential for communication and daily life. However, inaccessible websites, including in Sweden, create barriers for individuals with disabilities, often due to insufficient education and awareness among web developers. Our quantitative study aimed to assess the status of web accessibility education within Swedish web development and interface design programs. We analyzed curricula and surveyed 63 final-year students across 23 programs. Findings show that while most programs (18 out of 23) include web accessibility, integration levels vary. Only 2% of courses offered standalone accessibility objectives, and 7% incorporated it within other courses, leaving 91% without any. Student knowledge varied;69.8% were aware of accessibility guidelines and laws, but 30.2% were not. Additionally, only 26.2% of students reported acquiring knowledge about accessibility guidelines and laws from their current education. This underscores the need for better web accessibility education. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Developers building web applications constantly face challenges, particularly in working with complex APIs. In response, developers often turn to Stack Overflow, offering a window into the programming barriers developers face. We examined 301 posts on Stack Overflow related to front-end web development and systematically characterized the challenges present in these posts. We found that most challenges reflected not a request for new code or an explanation of an error message but a request about how a specific code snippet might be edited to make its behavior as desired. Many challenges also reflected an underlying need to gather information about how specific code idioms are implemented within a framework or library. We identified 28 barriers developers face in front-end web development. Our findings suggest opportunities for facilitating more effective interactions with complex APIs through new types of programming content and tools that better address barriers in working with code idioms.

The early web was built on static HTML or pages generated dynamically by the server. In both paradigms, the combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript was considered a specific platform rather than a core CS concept. In recent years, the nature of web development has shifted dramatically, emphasizing web applications that limit their dependency on server-side processing. Much of the content generation is handled in response to asynchronous execution of JavaScript. JavaScript is no longer just a language for writing event handlers; it now forms the core of client-side web development. This code must interact dynamically and asynchronously with complex backend processing systems. As such, modern web development is not as straightforward as using a server-side language to generate HTML text dynamically. It requires addressing a new computational paradigm, while also placing a greater emphasis on the user experience and accessibility. In our classes, we have observed the need to rethink how this part of our curriculum is structured. A one-semester course is no longer sufficient. We have also begun starting with JavaScript and the DOM as the native language of the web. In this birds-of-a-feather (BoF) session, we will exchange ideas on how this part of the curriculum is structured and how others approach teaching these courses.
