Crop leaf segmentation was one important research content in agricultural machine vision applications. In order to study and solve the segmentation problem of occlusive leaves, an improved watershed algorithm was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the color threshold component (G-R)/(G+R) was used to extract the green component of the cotton leaf image and remove the shadow and invalid background. Then the lifting wavelet algorithm and Canny operator were applied to extract the edge of the pre-processed image to extract cotton leaf region and enhance the leaf edge. Finally, the image of the leaf was labeled with morphological methods to improve the traditional watershed algorithm. By comparing the cotton leaf area segmented using the proposed algorithm with the manually extracted cotton leaf area, successful rates for all the images were higher than 97 %. The results not only demonstrated the effectiveness of the algorithm, but also laid the foundation for the construction of cotton growth monitoring system.

Aimed at the disadvantage of over-segmentation that traditional watershed algorithm segmented MM images, a new method of MRI image segmentation was presented. First, through traditional watershed segmentation algorithm, the image was segmented into different areas, and then based on the improved kernel-clustering algorithm, we used Mercer-kernel to map average gray value of each area to high-dimensional feature space, making originally not displayed features manifested. In this way, we can achieve a more accurate clustering, and solve over-segmentation problem of watershed algorithm segmenting MRI images efficiently, thereby get better segmentation result. Experimental results show that the method of this paper can segment brain MRI images satisfactorily, and obtain clearer segmentation images.

However, the segmentation and extraction of building boundary in mountainous area has always been a difficult problem to be solved. In view of the shape irregularity and the stack phenomenon in milk somatic cell pictures. An improvement watershed method is proposed in the paper, which is mainly used in resolving the over-segmentation problem in watershed algorithm. Its main idea is: distance transformation is used for binary image firstly, obtaining the central points in the local maximum regions (seed points), and merging the redundancy seed points. This makes the over-segmentation problem was basically solved. Finally the small areas are deleted after watershed segmentation. Experiments show that the improved watershed method can accurately and quickly separate the milk somatic cells and control the over-segmentation. The effect is obvious.

This paper presents an algorithm for a 3D segmentation of the aorta artery in magnetic resonance images (MRI). The purpose is to project the 3D segmented aorta in the patient's abdomen with an augmented reality (AR) system to help the surgeon in laparoscopic interventions. In order to obtain accurate results in the segmentation process a marker-controlled watershed algorithm is used. Since this method requires a robust gradient image and two marker sets, a preprocessing step is carried out in each image. The algorithm is automatic and the results and promising with a Jaccard coefficient (JC) of 0.8107 +/- 0.0228.

A novel watershed segmentation algorithm has been proposed to segment the human skin region of RGB color images based on Cb component of YCbCr color space in this paper. The conventional watershed segmentation algorithm is not suitable for segmentation of human skin region from color images directly, since it is difficult to decide suitable color information of human skin. At first stage, the RGB image is converted into YCbCr color space which contains three components luminance, blue difference component (Cb) and red-difference component (Cr). The Cb component has been extracted and used for further processing steps. After extraction of Cb component, the modified marker based watershed algorithm has been applied for segmentation of human skin region only from RGB color image. The proposed method has been tested on FRI CVL Face Database. In experimental stage, results show that the proposed technique avoids over segmentation problem and produce good segmentation result which is comparable with the same obtained by other algorithms. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common type of blood cancer in Canadian adults. CLL cells are abnormal lymphocytes, which tend to be slightly larger than normal resting lymphocytes and have a condensed appearance to their chromatin. There is a low number of related works on this disease. This paper presents a method to segment normal and CLL lymphocytes into two parts: nucleus, and cytoplasm using a watershed algorithm and optimal thresholding. The goal of this work is reducing the over and under segmentation error of the watershed algorithm by suppressing 1% of the local minima. We tested 140 microscopic lymphocyte images (normal and CLL), and the algorithm obtained 99.92% maximum accuracy for nucleus segmentation, and 99.85% maximum accuracy for cell segmentation. The cytoplasm can be extracted with a 99.63% maximum accuracy with simple mask subtraction. The code for the presented algorithm is shared on the MATLAB (R) file exchange website.

An efficient watershed algorithm is proposed in order to solve the problem that touching rice is difficult to process during consequent image segmentation. First, the binary image is ultra-eroded by using a different structuring element to form different distance image. Second, watershed image is obtained by using the watershed algorithm. Finally, the real watershed can be extracted. Compared with other watershed algorithms, the experiment results demonstrated that this method segmented out rice successfully in the touching rice image and improved the measurement accuracy, and also overcome over-segmentation effectively.
