Quantitative Evaluation of Pain with Pain Index Extractecl from Electroencephalogram

Background： The current pain assessment methods are strongly subjective and easily affected by outside influences, and there is an urgent need to develop a reliable objective and quantitative pain-monitoring indicator. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using Pain index （Pi） to assess pain symptoms in pain patients. Methods： Subjects were enrolled from patients seeking treatment at Pain Medicine Center of China Medical University Aviation General Hospital from October 2015 to December 2016, such as postherpetic neuralgia, spinal cord injury, femoral head necrosis, lumbar disc herniation, trigeminal neuralgia, complex regional pain syndrome, pefineal pain, phantom limb pain, etc., （pain group, n = 111）, as well as healthy volunteers without subjective pain （control group, n = 100）. The subjective pain symptoms in pain patients were evaluated by Pi and visual analogue scale/numerical rating scales （VAS/NRS）, respectively, and the relationship between them was analyzed using single factor correlation analysis and multiple factor regression analysis. Results： Pi levels in the pain group were significantly higher than those of the control group （t= 6.273, P 〈 0.001 ）, the correlation analysis of Pi and VAS/NRS score in the pain group showed that the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.797 （P 〈 0.001）; After adjusted for types of pain, pain sites, medication, gender, and age, Pi was found to be independently correlated to VAS/NRS score （P 〈 0.001）. Conclusions： Pi significantly correlates with VAS/NRS score, might be used to evaluate the subjective pain symptoms in patients and has good research and application value as an objective pain assessment tool.

Sustaining outdoor life in cities is decreasing because of the recent rapid urbanisation without considering climate-responsive urban design concepts. Such inadvertent climatic modifications at the indoor level have imposed considerable demand on the urban energy resources. It is important to provide comfortable ambient climate at open urban squares. Researchers need to predict the comfortable conditions at such outdoor squares. The main objective of this study is predict the visitors' outdoor comfort indices by using a developed computational model termed as SVM-wavelet (Support Vector Machines combined with Discrete wavelet Transform algorithm). For data collection, the field study was conducted in downtown Isfahan, Iran (51 degrees 41' E, 32 degrees 37' N) with hot and arid summers. Based on different environmental elements, four separate locations were monitored across two public squares. Meteorological data were measured simultaneously by surveying the visitors' thermal sensations. According to the subjects' thermal feeling and their characteristics, their level of comfort was estimated. Further, the adapted computational model was used to estimate the visitors' thermal sensations in terms of thermal comfort indices. The SVM-wavelet results indicate that R-2 value for input parameters, including Thermal Sensation, PMW (The predicted mean vote), PET (physiologically equivalent temperature), SET (standard effective temperature) and T-mrt were estimated at 0.482, 0.943, 0.988, 0.969 and 0.840, respectively. This paper proposes a Coiflet wavelet algorithm based on FPGA to realize the real-time detection of power quality transient disturbance. As to the real-time problem of wavelet algorithm software applications, the algorithm is realized on the FPGA. When Coiflet wavelet is taken as basic functions, the effect of the detecting signal singularity is good. Because of its symmetry in the time-frequency domain the algorithm could avoid the signal distortion during decomposition and reconstruction, which is convenient for subsequent signal processing. By simulating test of several kinds of signal source, the begin-end time of signal transient disturbance is contrasted. The test results show that the method is more accurate and feasible on real-time detection of power quality transient disturbance.

The Cognitive Radio is the most emerging research area in communication and to bringing this technology into implementation the first and foremost challenge for researchers is the estimation of the spectral holes of a wide band spectrum. So the spectral estimation techniques are most going to play a vital role in Cognitive Radio. In this paper we are proposing a novel non parametric spectral estimation technique for better spectral efficiency of the signal with minimized power errors in the estimation. ERLS Technique is introduced for better result of power signal spectral estimation. The ERLS Technique is the combination of wavelet algorithm and artificial neural network (ANN). The wavelet algorithm is used to extract the frequency components of the power signal. Then, using the neural network, the power error signals is determined. So, the complexity and computational time of spectral estimation are reduced.

With the development of microgrid technologies, the impacts brought by istributed generation (DG) on the distribution network protection has not been improved effectively. Therefore, this article analyzed the fault characteristics of IBDG (inverter-based distributed generations) and that of microgrid composed by IBDG;built the simulation model of IBDG with P-Q control and that of IBDG with U-F control, as well as simulation models of microgrid under islanding operation mode and grid-connected operation mode, analyzed the fault characteristic while different faults occured in transmission line. They all provide a basis for microgrid protection. In a microgrid composed by IBDG, fault current magnitude cannot be used to determine the fault and the use of Fourier algorithm will cause frequency leakage. Thus, an adaptive distance protection algorithm based on an improved wavelet algorithm for digital filtering is proposed. At last, this article built the coordination optimization model and got the relay setting value using ant colony algorithm. The action time of the relays in general is shortest.

Background: The sensitivity of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images to identify retinal tissue morphology characterized by early neural loss from normal healthy eyes is tested by calculating structural information and fractal dimension. OCT data from 74 healthy eyes and 43 eyes with type 1 diabetes mellitus with mild diabetic retinopathy (MDR) on biomicroscopy was analyzed using a custom-built algorithm (OCTRIMA) to measure locally the intraretinal layer thickness. A power spectrum method was used to calculate the fractal dimension in intraretinal regions of interest identified in the images. ANOVA followed by Newman-Keuls post-hoc analyses were used to test for differences between pathological and normal groups. A modified p value of <0.001 was considered statistically significant. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to describe the ability of each parameter to discriminate between eyes of pathological patients and normal healthy eyes. Results: Fractal dimension was higher for all the layers (except the GCL + IPL and INL) in MDR eyes compared to normal healthy eyes. When comparing MDR with normal healthy eyes, the highest AUROC values estimated for the fractal dimension were observed for GCL + IPL and INL. The maximum discrimination value for fractal dimension of 0.96 (standard error = 0.025) for the GCL + IPL complex was obtained at a FD <= 1.66 (cut off point, asymptotic 95% Confidence Interval: lower-upper bound = 0.905-1.002). Moreover, the highest AUROC values estimated for the thickness measurements were observed for the OPL, GCL + IPL and OS. Particularly, when comparing MDR eyes with control healthy eyes, we found that the fractal dimension of the GCL + IPL complex was significantly better at diagnosing early DR, compared to the standard thickness measurement. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the GCL + IPL complex, OPL and OS are more susceptible to initial damage when comparing MDR with control healthy eyes. Fractal an

The purpose of this study is to determine the performance of the working memory in processing visual stimuli based on the single-trial Event-Related Potential (ERP) signal. This signal was further analyzed using the logistic regression method to investigate children's working memory ability. This study involved 54 children aged 10 to 12 years old who were given computer-based visual stimuli while their working memory activities were simultaneously recorded using the Neurofax 9200 EEG acquisition machine. Redundant noises and artifacts were removed using wavelet algorithm and ICA techniques. The EEG signals were segmented to obtain the average mean of single-trial ERP and necessary input for the logistic regression classifier. Results indicated that the resultant parameters as well as biological data were significant in predicting whether a child had working impairment or not. Moreover, the signal's sensitivity value was more than the specificity value. In conclusion, our results indicated the working memory impairment in children tends to worsen with age.

In this paper, we proposed an improved fog-removing method in order to make the images becoming more clearly and more easy to recognition. The proposed method combines the Retinex algorithm and wavelet transform algorithm. The proposed method firstly use Retinex algorithm to enhance the image, then the wavelet transform algorithm is used to enhance the details of the image, finally a clearly image which are removed fog can be obtained after reduce the none-important coefficients. Through analyzing the PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of the image contrast, the images which are processed by our proposed method have the PSNR values higher than the traditional Retinex algorithm's.

Fingerprint image preprocessing technology has been widely used with the development of intelligent identity recognition system, which studies fingerprint image restoration, enhancement and thinning based on digital image processing technology. This paper presents system design and realization of preprocessing technology for fingerprint image. Fingerprint image has restoration processing by adopting image filed calculation, image background segmentation, image equalization, image convergence and image smoothing algorithm in order at first. Then Gabor wavelet algorithm is used to enhance the contrast of fingerprint image. Image thinning algorithm is carried out to extract the skeleton of fingerprint image at last. Test result shows that the method presented has good accuracy, quick speed and strong robustness for realtime application.
