Semantic-Based Data Mashups Using Hierarchical Clustering and Pattern Analysis Methods

Data mashups enable users to create new applications by combining web apis from several data sources. However, the existing data mashup framework requires some programming knowledge, hence it is not suitable for use by non-expert users. In this paper, we present hierarchical clustering and pattern analysis methods that build semantic ontologies automatically, and propose similarity searching algorithms that support the operation semantic matching and composable api discovery. These algorithms allow mashup developers to automate the discovery and composition of web apis eliminating the need for programmer involvement. We describe an experimental study on a collection of 168 REST apis and 50 SOAP apis. The experimental results show that our approach performs better in terms of both the rate of recall and precision performance compared with existing methods.

JSONDISCOVERER: Visualizing the schema lurking behind JSON documents

The so-called api economy is pushing more and more companies to provide open web apis to access their data, typically using the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) as interchange data format. While JSON has been designed to be easy to read and parse, their structure is implicit. This poses a serious problem when consuming and integrating web apis from different sources since it forces us to manually analyze each individual api in detail. This paper presents JSONDISCOVERER, a tool that alleviates this problem by discovering (and visualizing) the implicit schema of JSON documents as well as possible composition links among JSON-based web apis. A Black Box Tool for Robustness Testing of REST Services

REST services are nowadays being used to support many businesses, with most major companies exposing their services via REST interfaces (e.g., Google, Amazon, Instagram, and Slack). In this type of scenarios, heterogeneity is prevalent and software is sometimes exposed to unexpected conditions that may activate residual bugs, leading service operations to fail. Such failures may lead to financial or reputation losses (e.g., information disclosure). Although techniques and tools for assessing robustness have been thoroughly studied and applied to a large diversity of domains, REST services still lack practical approaches that specialize in robustness evaluation. In this paper, we present a tool (named bBOXRT) for performing robustness tests over REST services, solely based on minimal information expressed in their interface descriptions. We used bBOXRT to evaluate an heterogeneous set of 52 REST services that comprise 1,351 operations and fit in distinct categories (e.g., public, private, in-house). We were able to disclose several different types of robustness problems, including issues in services with strong reliability requirements and also a few security vulnerabilities. The results show that REST services are being deployed preserving software defects that harm service integration, and also carrying security vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious users.

Service ranking in service networks using parameters in complex networks: a comparative study

In recent years, the number of services, together with their types, is expanding rapidly. Confronted with such a large number of services, people are hard to discover the desired services. Service ranking is regarded as a significant step to solve the problem. But, how to evaluate the importance of services correctly is still a significant issue. Though there are some literatures to rank services, it is not enough. In this paper, we proposed to apply parameters in complex networks to measure the importance of services. First, our approach models services and the relations between every pair of services as a service network. Second, we apply a set of parameters in complex networks to measure the corresponding parameter values as their importance. Finally, services will be ranked according to their importance in a descending order. Empirical experiments are performed on a real-world data set crawled from Programmableweb, and the results show the similarity and difference between the results of different parameters.

Práce se zabývá dvěma hlavními tématy. V prvním zkoumáme možnosti nabízení obsahu portálu jeho navštěvníkům. Nabízení je založeno na modelování chování uživatele portálu a na systému hierarchického nabízení obsahu. Druhé téma se zabývá šířením obsahu webu do sociálních sítí a poskytováním dat a funkcionality webu aplikacím třetí strany pomocí aplikačního programového rozhraní. První kapitoly popisují použité technologie, protokoly a bezpečnostní zranitelnosti webu. Další kapitoly jsou věnované návrhu aplikace a její následné implementaci. Práce je součástí projektu na univerzitě UTAD a funkce v tomto projektu je definována v úvodu technické zprávy.

The api-mashup ecosystem: a comprehensive study of Programmableweb

With the increasing number of open apis on the internet, reusing them to develop value-added new applications has received enormous attention. Mashup is the most popular technique for combining apis into new applications. Against this background, the api-mashup ecosystem composed of apis and mashups is emerging. This paper focuses on the api-mashup ecosystem of *** , which is the largest web api portal. Although a few studies have investigated this api-mashup ecosystem, the understandings to it are still limited. In addition, the features of the api-mashup ecosystem may change due to its continuous evolvement. Therefore, this paper reinvestigates the api-mashup ecosystem of Programmableweb by exploiting the latest data. We first conduct a statistical analysis to the current api-mashup ecosystem, and then explore the relationships between apis or api providers to build cooperation networks of them. Finally, we analyse the derived cooperation networks and uncover some important features.

This paper develops ReceiptLogService Platform, which enables consumers to using their personal purchase receipts, store their receipt logs, and to use the data for various consumer services. The proposed platform consists of three components: receipt scanner, ReceiptLog DB, and ReceiptLog api. The receipt scanner digitizes daily receipts, and the ReceiptLog DB manages the scanned data. The ReceiptLog api provides the receipt log as a service. The api consists of the Basicapi, which provides fundamental access for the receipt log, whereas the Miningapi performs a statistical analysis of the receipt log. These apis are published as web services, and can used by multiple applications and services for various purposes. We also conduct an experimental evaluation with actual subjects, to confirm the usefulness of services with receipt log.

Development of the Japan Tsunami Hazard Information Station (J-THIS)

To promote effective disaster countermeasures against possible tsunamis in the future, an effective appli-cation of tsunami hazard information is important. However, there were insufficient systems available for utilizing and applying various tsunami hazard infor-mation. Based on this situation, we developed and have been improving the Japan Tsunami Hazard In-formation Station (J-THIS), an open web system available as a public portal for providing tsunami haz-ard information based on the probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment (PTHA). It provides tsunami haz-ard information through the following services: map services, data download services, and web application programming interface (api) services. Based on the PTHA along the Nankai Trough, the J-THIS provides distributions of exceedance probability of tsunami heights for 30 years, tsunami hazard curves, earth-quake fault models, tsunami heights for each earth-quake fault model, and bathymetric charts. To illus-trate the use of the J-THIS, understanding how exist-ing coastal structures will protect us against tsunamis while enabling the local governments to set investment priorities in disaster risk reduction and resilience is key.

Automatic Workarounds: Exploiting the Intrinsic Redundancy of web Applications

Despite the best intentions, the competence, and the rigorous methods of designers and developers, software is often delivered and deployed with faults. To cope with imperfect software, researchers have proposed the concept of self-healing for software systems. The ambitious goal is to create software systems capable of detecting and responding "autonomically" to functional failures, or perhaps even preempting such failures, to maintain a correct functionality, possibly with acceptable degradation. We believe that self-healing can only be an expression of some form of redundancy, meaning that, to automatically fix a faulty behavior, the correct behavior must be already present somewhere, in some form, within the software system either explicitly or implicitly. One approach is to deliberately design and develop redundant systems, and in fact this kind of deliberate redundancy is the essential ingredient of many fault tolerance techniques. However, this type of redundancy is also generally expensive and does not always satisfy the time and cost constraints of many software projects. With this article we take a different approach. We observe that modern software systems naturally acquire another type of redundancy that is not introduced deliberately but rather arises intrinsically as a by-product of modern modular software design. We formulate this notion of intrinsic redundancy and we propose a technique to exploit it to achieve some level of self-healing. We first demonstrate that software systems are indeed intrinsically redundant. Then we develop a way to express and exploit this redundancy to tolerate faults with automatic workarounds. In essence, a workaround amounts to replacing some failing operations with alternative operations that are semantically equivalent in their intended effect, but that execute different code and ultimately avoid the failure. In this paper, we present a novel architecture for content-based image retrieval systems. Effective storing, browsing and searching collections of images is one of the most critical challenges of computer science. The design of architecture for storing such data requires a set of tools and frameworks such as database and service-oriented frameworks. With the vast growth of the Internet multimedia content, web services for CBIR systems are highly desirable. The proposed solution is based on a multilayer architecture, which allows replacing any component without recompilation of other components. The approach is elastic and highly scalable. For experimental purposes we implemented the SURF local interest point detector as a feature extractor and k-means clustering as the image indexer. We also adopted an external solution, i.e. the CEDD descriptor into our system. The presented architecture is intended for content-based retrieval experiments as well as for real-world CBIR desktop and web applications.
